Tending my garden...

I didn't know that when I started my summer cleaning, a typhoon was coming our way... So, instead of reaching up for the cobwebs on my ceiling, I decided to tend my garden and remove the difficult-to-pull wild grass...The soil was soft... And I had a lovely time tending my garden, rearranging the flower pots and the hanging orchids, trimming the greens and the amarillos, planting new red bell peppers, and much more. The sky was so blue after the rain, and I enjoyed watching the huge cumulus clouds while catching my breath... It's so unbelievable how beautiful and simple the world could be in my simple garden...

Hi Eileen, Yes, gardening is very therapeutic. I have just put in about 100 assorted bulbs so we should have some colour in spring. Here we have to grow winter veggies this time of year so I have some of those started too. We are just waiting for the first frost for the year and hope it is not too severe so as to damage the plants. Enjoy your garden, Nick.

That is quite exciting, landscaping a thousand square meters... Are you planting trees? If I have a huge lot like that, I will plant mango, avocado, guyabano on three corners, transform the fourth corner for my mini forest and plant tiny trees such as calamansi, malunggay, and kamias... You have a lot of work to do... That is just great.

Nice to see you back, Nick, I thought you totally abandoned mylot. You must be a good gardener, too. I am not as adept about which crops grow well in a particular season, but I really want to have my own produce... I am trooping to the local grocer and look for some seeds....

Sorry to have been away for so long. We moved house and it took several months to finalize it so we were without internet in temporary accommodation. The lots here are quite large, 1000 sq m being a small one and it frustrates me to see them with all grass and no garden. Seems to be a waste of lot with no veggies or fruit growing. So I am digging my lot all up and growing veggies and fruit with a small section at the front for roses and bulbs and flowers etc.

Hiya eileen, Nothing can keep me away from sitting outside on the Stairs here and before long all this "garden" will be uprooted anyway as it is above the Garages underneath us and they are being made "waterproof". In place and very sorry to say there will be a load of cement instead to please Car owners I suppose. Okay you can still have potted plants but worse still they will uproot all the wild rambling Roses that have grown here and have become home to so much Wild life too. Just watching the Sparrows hop over the wire fencing is something that you cannot buy. This is not a proper garden in that sense it´s just like a huge plant pot that they will soon get rid of so I am off to treasure it all I can. Am taking Photos of all the Flowers that grow here for memories of what it is like and to be able to look at. Really it will not solve much as this place and all the others are built on top of a huge natural lake which is underneath this hence the real problem is what they have built not the lake the walls here in the House retain in the cold in Winter far too much as a result and far too hot in the Summer high humidity here. The first plaster they put on the Walls in all the Houses would not stick properly so you can tell what the problem is really. Treasure your Garden and yes I love to watch Storms outside as much as I can and then the Rainbows after. Do you ever make a wish on them when you see them? xxx

That environmental destruction is also happening here. The vast mini forests had been displaced and huge malls had taken their spots.... But our government is actually charging cutting down of trees criminal and thereby punishable by law. There is a strong campaign for reforestation now. But the indigenous creatures are already gone....

Hiya eileen, It´s a bit difficult to explain how these Gardens are they are not proper Gardens you see they are like Gardens that they have on high rise buildings there is no real depth to them at all they are about a metre and a half deep in depth and filled with Soil that is never replaced so anything that grows there like grass will always be much weaker than if you had normal ground where the depth is endless. Roses that grow here only last a few weeks really in their full bloom and a lot them die quick as they have not got natural enriched Soil. Problem with these Gardens is that when it Rains there is no natural drainage so the Rain Water stays in there longer and eventually seeps through the cement down to the Garages below. I think that they could have thought of this ages ago as these Flats are only 16 years old. It´s not as if they are over sixty years old is it. Here they are not conscious enough that Spain will become desert Land if they do not take urgent Steps to stop it. By the Road sides they are planting lovely Bushes of all types but that still does not replace the Trees that grow here. One example is about sixty odd kilometres from here is the Bardenas where the King took the whole Forest and felled it to make his Spanish Armada. There are miles of barren land instead of replacing it with Trees it´s now agricultural land okay they use it but there are no replaced Trees so there is flash flooding very bad Thunder Storms and the drainage is quite bad too. But thank goodness that it still does Rain albeit not very often it gets far too hot in that Region. Gardens here will be replaced like I said with cold hard concrete which I find very dismaying as it gets very hot here and it will make the heat even worse than what it is already. If this were my Flat for example I would be buying two of those great Big Canopy things I think that´s what you call them you know the green heavy duty type and put them around the front and the back they are fantastic for warding the heat off and keeping out the flies as well. They don´t look very nice but the fancy ones do not do anything you see they are more decorative than anything else. With the other type you don´t really need to use air conditioning at all or hardly. As like where you are the humidity is very high most times as all this is built on top of a huge lake. It should really never have been built here but then I don´t make the choices do I? An example of Mans folly and what making a quick penny will do to them.xxx

my mom is the one who takes care of our garden. i only help out every now and then. and yes, in this little piece of green it can be very beautiful, simple and peaceful. my favorite spot is where the roses is. i dream of a rose garden with huge blooms and the scent that makes the air fresh and romantic. hehe the greatest surprise is where the watermelon grew. to date, we harvested 3 good-sized watermelons just outside the kitchen door in one corner of the garden. 2 sugary red and one in yellow with black seeds. it was an amazing feeling. now, tomatoes occupy the spot. have a great day eileen!

Hmmm, your mom must have a huge, lovely garden. I wish I could also have roses and watermelons and tomatoes, but roses need a lot of caring...I will see if I can have a rose plant in a pot. And yes, okay, perhaps it is time now to grow tomatoes. I never did try it actually...

hello eileen, i was imagining you and the way you describe your garden and it is so refreshing. i have seen the news and the typhoon has really made a big destruction on fields and lives. i am lucky where i am because i have never experienced typhoon ever. but our house is situated below the hill where the gsis subdivision was erected hence during heavy rains, all water rush out to the street where i walk and i get flash floods, just below the knees and when the rain stops.. a few minutes later, and it is gone too. ann

I went out soon as the heavy downpour turned into drizzle. It felt great, as if I was naturally part of that space... as if it was where I belong... Stay safe and keep away from the flash flood. It is more dangerous than it looks...

Our home - The garden that makes our life worth living
We gave up our life in the metro to be with nature. We are here in a semi rural town where we have ample space which is now filled with colour the green taking up most of the space, fruit trees that attract birds as also the bird bath that we installed for them specially. Life is worth living all on account of our garden where I spend a lot of time strolling and praising God for making it possible.

Your garden is so lush, mine is far from it. I also feel closer to God when I am gardening. It seems that He answers me when I praise Him for all the blessings of plants and flowers....

Perennials - These are some of the perennials that grow in my garden - Ixora and Bird of Paradise
I started with seasonal flowers and vegetables but with less help around, I have now settled down for fruit trees, and perennials which add colour to the garden throughout the year.

My daughters wanted to help, but I sort of want to give my garden my creative ideas. I go for jungle like scapes while my daughter likes lots of aloe vera and the like plants. The other one go for cacti and ferns... So, gyani, thanks for the offer but I suppose you have to tend your own garden, Different folks have different strokes...

tomatoes planted in container - These tomatoes are planted around a cage and fed through the compost in the middle, and they will stake to the cage.
The typhoon did summer cleaning of the air, making it all fresh. It is great to spend time in the garden. I am planting some things now, and my peas are blooming, they are counted as a "cool weather crop" so I will plant them again in the fall. I am hoping to have a wonderful crop of tomatoes and peppers. I am planting in containers, around a frame. Compost goes in the middle of the frame and if the plants need staked or tied the frame is there. I often plant basil with the tomatoes.

dawnee, it is truly difficult to get off the the net. I also dilly dallied before I searched for the broom and the floor mop. Believe me, that didn't work. What finally kept me from the computer was my eyeglasses. It broke. So finally, when the typhoon tempered, I went out and started shearing the sampaguita vines. Before I knew it, I was deep into gardening. It ain't done yet but I gotta rest!

our backyard garden - where kids used long stick to get mangoes
Hello Eileen, I don't do that tending garden stuff but since my mom's more interested to it she does the gardening thing. my responsibility there ONLY was to water them when ever she's not around. i don't know how many times i should water them, before it's morning and evening but sometimes i do it once a day or every three days. then, when ever she see something that is dying in her plants should would complain that am not watering them. I think we should all reserved a garden in our home because not only it contributes a better air but also supply us with oxygen, which is more am concerned of having a garden. we use to have garden to both front and back but after teh commercial rent construction at the front, the garden left is at the back. but at least it's near me and my mom's room.

Yes, the plants inhale all the carbon dioxide we exhale, and we inhale all the oxygen the plants emit. You have a cute backyard there, Knight, what are you guys picking? Do water in the morning. The plants are vulnerable to pests when they are soaked at night...

Reading this makes me wanna go out to my garden and do the same. I'm planning to rearrange everything but i'm waiting till my garden chairs and table arrive which might be next week or a week after next so i can see how i would do the rearranging. When I'm stressed i usually spend time in the garden and feeling the cool breeze. The green color relaxes my eyes and touching the soil relieves my stress.

You know what toni, I also want to have a real garden set. I just have one heavy marble table where I put my tools. The chair is a portable monobloc which I bring out with me every time I go gardening... Hmmm, after all the planting I am planning, I'll shop for a set, too. Time to meditate comfortably in the garden at night...

The rain refreshed my garden actually. I was conserving water and many of my plants got crispy fried by the searing summer heat. Now the plants are much greener... and it's just a few days after that typhoon...

That was nice, I hope I also have a garden but my yard is only good for the garage not for a garden. I got a small space near the grotto for a few flower pots, but that what's I only got. I remember my mom doing the same thing during rainy season, she loves to grow and cultivate her garden while the rain is pouring.

Are you sure that the first rain was not that too acidic and radioactive as they say, good if they mutate into bigger fruits, much more leafy and bigger flowers. Or better if they turned out to be the size of a bonsai.

I don't garden. I am not good with flowers. I had to weed the vegetable garden my dad planned when I was growing up. I so hated that! So if I had the oppurtunity to have a garden, with flowers or whatever,it wouldn't happen. I hated doing the weeding job as a kid and I would not want to do any planting either! It isn't my thing!

Sad to hear it, my friend. As from my area here, it had been very heaty, without any rain for nearly a week now. I need to get-up early to water my flowers and plants, to make sure they are capable to endure the heat. As for myself and family, i make sure that we drink enough of water daily, to avoid any sickness during this heat season. I really hope can see the rain falling in my area here soon. It is indeed a happy moment if i am able to watch and enjoy the blue sky like in your area there.

Me again, Have been skimming through the page here on the responses and your Garden sounds really lovely. I would give anything to have plants like that too. I want to be able to have two Parrots as well that can fly free and have a Fountain for them to splash in as well. Just my idea. Aloe Vera plants are really great to look at and use as well. Yes huge Malls can be good but in the right place and they attract a lot of bad heat all unnatural stuff I think. Another annoying thing about them is that they put them in the most inconvenient places for you to get to them they are always separated by noisy motorways. They might try putting Underground Subways for People with two feet you know. Some kind Person has put a Bridge for animals to cross at least somebody is thoughtful like that. A Chinese Architect designs all his projects with loads of Green Stuff all over the place and it looks wonderful I think.

Yes, i can imagine how beautiful your garden looks. I love the flowers and scent from them, together with the neatness where i have the space to walk, roam or even lie on the grass, watching the beautifl sky above me. It's a form of relaxation after all that hard work. It's too bad i can't have a garden here, if not i will be sure to decorate it well, making it seem like my 2nd home.
