animal eyes

animal eyes can sometimes be extremely disconcerting. sometimes they are just too intelligent, sometimes you wonder just what is going on behind them and sometimes they are just plain strange. if you want a particularly good example of just plain strange look up leaf tail gecko. so when have you felt a bit taken aback looking at an animal's eyes? and why? and i have found a quiz if you want to see just how good you are at identifying animals: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/quiz/2011/apr/05/animals-identification-eye-quiz

I didn't do well in the quiz. Many of the animals they offered, I have never heard of, let alone been close enough to to see their eyes! I do think that eyes are enormously expressive in most animals and if an animal is capable of "facial" expressions at all, the eyes are the one thing that animals, both of the same species and other species, are naturally drawn to. It is the way that we humans read (and misread) other animals' eyes and facial expressions that is the key to why we can relate to and communicate with them. Dolphins always have what looks to us 'smiley' expressions, so we like them; eagles and owls have 'fierce' expressions, so we tend to be afraid of them; rabbits and guinea pigs tend to look fearful or surprised, so we want to cuddle them. Dogs (by accident, I think) actually do have very similar facial expressions to humans and can easily 'read' us. I think that it's that (and the natural habit of dogs to look to a leader) that has very early on made them 'man's best friend'.

I'm sure that it's partly that, especially after tens of thousands of years of humans managing and controlling the breeding of dogs, but it had to start somewhere and I know that wild dogs themselves (wolves, coyotes, dingoes, foxes) communicate far more by facial expressions than most people (even dog owners) realise. I think that dogs themselves are predisposed to read facial expression and that - by accident, long association, breeding or whatever - their 'language' is similar to ours.

i think the ability of dogs to read people, and that their expressions are easy for us to read, is partially an adaptation to living with humans

9 out of 14... Yeah, strange eyes on that gecko. Maybe that's where filmmakers got some of their ideas for aliens...

chameleons are pretty good too. i like the eyes moving to look at different things at the same time.

That was a hard test. With all the different species I am not familiar with I had to just make a choice. I got the ones close to home. Their eyes are lovely and full of life. I thank you for sharing this quiz with me. Really interesting. The eyes of a deer I came up upon in the forest one time was enough for me. It surprised me and I surprised it.

As I had said before I failed miserably. I like the eyes of baby deers - so trusting and of course dogs. I can go quite dog eyed over dogs. Parrrots eyes are usually very kind whereas cat's can sonetimes look scornful. Can't stay - the tenant had barricaded herself in her apartment again. gong in for days!

She is a bit paranoid and is convinced that I am intercepting her cell calls amongst other things. I need to get the ceiling repaired in her apartment as it is below my boss' apartment and here is a huge hole from water damage as she did not notice it. he was screaming at me to break in and and get it fixed but I did it the legal way so he is crosser than ever at me. I will send you the picture - it couldn't happen to a nicer guy It is a very long confusing story that would bore little blue bunnies but she will have left by end of next week

The most disconcerting animal-eyes are pigs'! They look almost human and seem to show extreme intelligence. I remember when I was doing my teaching practice, lodging at a pig-farm in Suffolk (UK), wandering into one of the large pig-houses. One big fat pig took a look at me, instantly summed me up as an unknown and unwanted guest and set up such a squealing that the whole lot joined in, intimidating me so much that I ran out! I will never forget those eyes!

i am very glad that i don't eat pigs

I don't either! It is a shame that such an intelligent animal just goes for slaughter. Apparently, they are as smart as dogs and can be trained in a similar way. I can't help wondering what we are missing out on by not getting to know them.

hi jb I once had a pure black cat with violet eyes and he was also cross eyed.the most amazing shade of violet you ever saw.He would get up close and stare into my eyes and I would wonder what was going on in his cat head. He was really a loving and lovable cat. I' think he knew I would always help him as he at times seemed to have problems with his sight. It almost broke my heart to have to give him to friends as we were selling our house and moving into an apartment that did not allow pets.

hi, i went through the quiz it says 8 out of a possible 14., it says get eyes tested.Anyways it was nice to take the quiz.I am familiar with cats and dogs eyes, and they tell a lot , and we can understadn them sometimes. They have a very sensible things which just react very fast ., they can grasp things quite far off.Hearing and visiblity is very good in animals compared to humans.

it depends on the animal. but i don't think there is a single animal whose senses are exactly the same as ours.

4 out of 14. Im really bad!! I didnt know a lot of the animals listed. I have a black labrador and he has yellow eyes, not brown eyes. Since he's black, a lot of people are afraid of him and if only they knew that he's a big baby. Sometimes he's looking deep into my eyes and I can swear something is going on in that head....other times.....I think his windows is frozen LOL Some animals seem to have "humanlike" eyes. Its very unsettling. How do we really know that they arent smart and the only reason we dont know about it is because they arent talking our language. Interesting test, thanks!

well i've seen people's eyes glaze over plenty of times. usually, for some strange reason, when i am sharing the latest fascinating anecdote about my hamster. i've also seen it in cats, sometimes they seem to maintain eye contact but just switch off. quite possibly for the same reason people do.

Yes! Wow, I rescued all my animals and I love them dearly. They are so sensitive, I don't know how people eat animals, cows, pigs chickens...all of them suffer so much, as they are like us I think it's horrible what humanity, the majority is doing with them.

I really wondered about this? Are animals eye are also windows of their souls? Lol. Their eyes is really fascinating. We cant read their emotions unlike what we do to humans. Their eyes are mysterious.

i think sometimes you can tell what they are feeling but often their emotions are very different to ours.
