Do you return EXCESS CHANGE?

Hmmmm, first allow me to tell a bit of a story here. Earlier this morning I had breakfast at a food shop inside the building where our company is a tenant. They're food is just ok but I can't say I like their crew - almost all of them are clumsy and the cashiers are way too distracted (especially when call center agent guys are around), I don't even want to communicate in any manner. After I paid for my meal, the cashier(that I really don't like) gave me excess change. Maybe she got distracted with one of those guys flirting and stuff. No matter how annoyed I am, I still returned the excess. However, with such an action, no one gave me a thank you. Well, what am I to expect? But with this story aside, I really am like this. When I notice excess in my change, I immediately return it - hmmmm, because it's the right thing to do, I believe. How about you? Do you return EXCESS CHANGE?

That is the correct thing to do. If they had a give a penny, take a penny jar, I would have put it in there. Try to get one of those NBC shows to do that topic. They could have the cashier to give them 100 dollars by mistake and see if they say something, or take it. It would be very interesting.

Great idea! I loves those shows on "what would you do" situations! What a great test of morality!

Yes. We return it to if we notice it before we leave. The would have tocome up with the money to make their cash register drawer come out right if we don't.

I always give back excess change. I had been in retail before and irt saddens me when people do not give back the excess change. I feel it is important that the person behind the the counter should have paid attention to what she was doing and she should have given you her full attention instead of paying attention to the call center guys.

Yes. The same with you, whenever I get excess change, whatever amount it may be, I return it. It is not mine for the taking. There was a time that I did not notice that I received an excess change. When I learned about it, I had no opportunity to return it. What I did was gave the excess to beggars.

Haha! Yes. I would do the same - return the excess change, because like you said, it is the right thing to do. =) I am proud of you! =P However, depending on the mood, I might be short with that cashier and tell her she'd better pay attention to her work next time or she will be causing problems with the company, and if I were her manager, she would really hear from me. Hahaha! =P

No not because of greed but because i dont really check my change that thoroughly when it is put in your hand you can tell if the change is about right. So i may gain on occasions due to human error but i will almost certainly have lost out as well it probably evens out over time. However in theory you should give it back because in theory it is theft in fact we were discussing this the other day in my law class.

That's a great thing what you did. Yep, I also return excess change. Being honest really does make my day. Even if it gets bad, a simple act like this can make me feel a lot better because of people's reaction. Most of the time they smile while saying "thanks" and it's enough to brighten up my day.

I do return them since it is somehow expected of me as a person to do the deed. It is a nice gesture for and as a customer for being considerate enough to point out the mistake and correct that particular mistake. In your situation, I guess nobody gave you a thank you becuase they felt that you should do it as somewhat sort of duty. But I think you should have earned that thank you for even just pointing the mistake.

I just re-read your post. I understand it better now. So she gave you too much money back and you gave it back to her? Yes, I would always do that - even if I do not particularly like the cashier. That is the money of the business, not hers personally. So I definitely would return it. Howeer, I still think it's really rude that she did not give you a BIG "thank you"! I, also, have made incorrect change mistakenly, and have been so thankful that the customer was honest enough to give it back to me.

Hi! Are you referring to tipping the cashier? It sounds like they don't really deserve to be tipped. I am a cashier / server at a pizza shop at night. (I stay home with my son during the day). And I go above and beyond for each and every customer that comes in. I give each cusotmer my full attention and sincerely care about their experience there and make sur ethey enjoy their meals. Younger and newer cashiers sometimes do not care as much. I'd like to say they do not know any better, but it's just comon courtesy in my opinion, to be super friendly while doing your job, especially one in the food service industry. Many people do not even tip cashiers that are good. We do make decent tips, though,as there are those customers who really appreciate our hard work and care. I ALWAYS acknowledge a person tipping in our tip jar as well. They do not have to do so and the change definitely adds up!

It may be a bad attitude but i don't give the extra change back. I love money so when i get a hold of some, i don't let it go that easily. :D

If I notice that they gave me excess change, then yes I have returned it and I still do. Not only is it the right thing to do, but that's how businesses stay in buisness--through their sales. If the cashier screwed up, it hurts the business, even if it's just a few cents, that can add up very quickly. So while it's tempting to keep the extra, it's better for everyone to be honest and hand it back. My 2 cents. ;)
