It's going to be an interesting week, we have a large trap placed near the creek, hopefullly to catch the visiting Lynx. However in the mean time every creature that eats meat will most likely get caught in the trap. We mean no harm to anyone of them, but we need to let them out. With this in mind we have had a lesson on how to let a skunk out. Very carefully. I wonder if vinigar will get the smell out of our cloths?

Oh my...a skunk...they are trying creatures..lol..I have heard tomato juice but I don't know if that will even work.
There was a neat of skunks near where I lived and a guy that lived down the street had a huge issue with one. Apparently the skunk was near his central heat and air unit and when it kicked on...the skunk sprayed it!!! His whole house was terrible. It took weeks to get the smell out of there.

I do not know about getting de skunked. It seems to me vinegar would work, but I have not had to try it. It sounds as if there is never a dull moment in your area. I guess it will be interesting to hear what comes to your trap.

If you do catch a skunk the best way to let it go is to drape a very thick blanket over the whole trap so he can't squirt you. Wait until he thinks that nobody is going to be around AND OPEN UP THE END OF THE TRAP. Hopefully he will leave, peaceably. If you do get your clothes squirted on the best thing I have heard to do is soak them in tomato juice for several days and them wash them in SOMEONE ELSE'S WASHING MACHINE. I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT YOU COULD USE KEROSENE TO CLEAN THEM. I don't think that I would use them again after using the kerosene treatment, though. Even if it did work you would not want to dry them in any other way but on a clothesline, outside.

My sister helped on summer with Dept of natural resources and they set live traps like you have done. She learned that a skunk needs to be able to dig in the dirt in order to spray. So, while in the wired live trap, a skunk cannot spray. I hope this helps. Good luck catching the lynx.

All a skunk really needs to spray is to have his feet on the ground. Nothing more.
