Just found out today that my job might be closing. I work at a prison and enjoy it very much and I really don't know what to do if it closes. I hope it don't happen. It is a very good job. I just wish I could find a job that is secure but that is saying a lot in these times. Maybe I should go and start looking for a job. What do you think? Should I wait to find out if they close or should I just start looking for other employment?

Wow sorry to hear this because it is so tough these days to get work almost everywhere. I probably would say that if you heard it from a reliable source and not just employee speculation, then silently start looking. Could be that something yet better awaits you and with better advancement anyway. If they do not close and you are still job hunting then nothing lost. But if they close, while you are looking I hope you get unemployment benefits, which of course won't be enough but it would be some help. Best of luck to you and know I know this feeling because my job closed last year with no notice what so ever and it has been too difficult to find work since.

It is so hard when the job disappears without any warning. It makes you feel like the whole world has been shaken.

Yeah especially in my case where none of us received unemployment, so indeed my world shook.

Is the whole prison closing or just your job? Perhaps you can find another job at the prison.

If the job closes you should be able to draw unemployment. In your position I would be looking, though. I am always looking it seems. Actually, my last job just had to put me on a temporary layoff because of the economy and I am drawing unemployment. Not finding much that I can do, so I am grateful for unemployment benefits. Good luck.
