Stingrays

Sting ray at the Phoenix Zoo - Petting the sting ray was really cool

Yesterday, my friend Tamanika and I took her two year old son to the Phoenix Zoo. I took along my camera hoping to get some great shots. I have a new frame that I needed to fill and thought a composition of zoo animals would look great on my wall. I was not expecting to get to have a new adventure. I got to pet a stingray! I'd never done that before. I was surprised at how they felt like velvet. Have you ever touched a sting ray? What did you think?

sting ray - This one had a really long tail
Now that is something I would LOVE to do. I've heard they are very smooth to the touch if you pet them going down their body, but if you rub up towards their heads, they can cut you. At least I think I heard that from somewhere? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. It's been a long time since I went to sea world.

They say their skin is like sandpaper, I don't think a touch going the wrong way will cut you, but it is rough, probably rougher if it is dry

No, I haven't. A sting ray is what killed Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. I think I'd be too scared to touch one.

sting ray - This is one of the ones my nephew fed.
The kind that killed Steve Irwin, from what I understand is a different type than the ones they have on display to pet. We did see a different kind swimming in a tank in the Amazon part of the zoo. It was really scary looking compared to the ones in the open tank that the kids were feeding and petting.

I have never touched a sting ray, but your discussion reminds me of the educational aspect of zoos. They are some of my favorite places to go, with or without kids.

Monkey - Phoenix zoo
I love the zoo! Phoenix has some great educational programs. One of their newest exhibits is the monkey habitat. Instead of looking inside the cages, the monkey's are in this huge enclosure. People come in and out and there is nothing between you and them. No bars, no cages, or wire. You can't touch or feed them, but you can get within a foot of them. It was the neatest thing. I'm adding a picture I took yesterday of one of them.
