I'm a little bit confused here, are chicken bones really not good for dogs or what? We have a dog and whenever we had chicken for our meal, we usually give her the left overs including the bones. Some says that it's not good for them because the bones may damage their intestines, but I think it's fine because from what I know dogs love to chew on bones right?

I've read that chicken bones are really not good for dogs. Our dog is allergic to chicken so we never give him chicken. The chicken bones are very soft so they break easily. You can even snap it with your own two hands or 1 hand and just use your fingers! No joke. And when they do snap, you can see that the part where it broke can have rather sharp edges. which can then cut or harm and get stuck in, IN, the dog. :( Which is rather sad.It can also choke them if it gets stuck. :(

I think it is strange that wild dogs, coyotes, wolves, etc. can eat animals with small bones and have no problem but domesticated animals can't. Does cooking the meat do something to the bones? I think someone else mentioned that but I really don't know. I think it is safer to just give dogs bones that are solid (beef, pork)rather than bones that could shatter easily. I know that getting bones that have sharp edges caught in the throat or stomach can do a lot of damage so it is probably best to avoid chicken bones.

IMO it is the cooking which dries the bones out and causes them the break into splinters, Wild animal eat the raw bones which are still pliable.

two reasons really. first, bird bones are light and hollow. and small. beef bones are large and much more solid. they break off in larger peices, rather than little and sharp bits.

I think you are right about that. But how many people go and don't cook the chicken so that they can give the raw bones to their dogs? It makes me wonder why beef bones don't splinter when dogs eat them even after cooking? I know that raw bones can be purchased from stores, but usually it is only from the larger animals like cows and pigs.

dogs shouldn't be given chicken bones. while naturally they can eat small animal bones, they wouldn't be cooked, and wouldn't splinter in the digestive system in the same way.

OK first off I no longer give my K9 Americans chicken bones. That being said since before i can even remember my household has always had pets, i was always encouraged to give our dogs leftover bones, and so i always did. They sure seem to enjoy them well enough. Then about 6 years back our beloved dog started chocking violently on one of the many bones we had just given him. So disturbingly scary, it was freaking awful. Luckily my mum is like Girl Scout Extraordinaire and as on many occasions saved the day. She got it out and he was fine. So then a vet say's that instead of just chewing it they usually end up eating the whole bone because they like the marrow flavor inside of them. However that's the real danger, the bone shards can easily get stuck and block the airway, Chocking the dog. Also the rest and even smaller bits are real sharp and are likely to cut up their insides. So unless its one of those look alike bones made out of hide or whatever its better overall to just stick with dog food.

Yes I have heard it is not good to give chicken bones to your dog. I too thought that this was okay as I used to give my dogs bones too and chicken bones and nothing ever happened to them. But I learned that it is true that it can damage there intestines and they can even choke on them. I learned this from a show called My Dog Ate What. The people thought the same way we do that it is okay to give dogs a chicken bone and they did just that and that very night their dog got sick. Once taking the dog to the hospital they learned that the bone that they gave their dog was lodged in its throat. They had to have surgery to remove it which cost a lot of money. After watching that show I vowed to never feed my dog another chicken bone. Especially don't give bones to puppies or to small dogs.

Just because nothing has gone wrong YET does not mean its okay to feed your dog chicken bones; it just means that, so far, you've been lucky. Chicken MEAT is fine (and is, in fact, a primary ingredient in a lot of pet food) but make sure you remove the meat from the bones. As several other responders have posted already, chicken bones are brittle and will splinter in your dog's throat and/or intestines. If you want to give your dog bones, stick with mammal bones. Since the meat you cook at home will not often have bones in it (how often do you actually have cow bones in your groceries?) you can get these bones very cheap at any pet supply store. So far your dog has escaped injury from eating chicken bones, but do you really want to continue to take chances with her life? Wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry?

I would NEVER give my dogs chicken bones to eat because they splinter so easily. Some of the splinters are sharp as needles and I would not put my dogs in the danger of what these splinters could do to their mouths, throats and innards.

Raw bones & cooked have quite different properties. Cooked bones become brittle & break off into sharp little shards that's why their dangerous. Raw bones on the other hand break of in small more rounded chunks which are safe. Do NOT give your dog cooked chicken bones.

It is ok to give raw chicken bones. I feed my dogs raw chicken wings one a day for their teeth. They need to eat raw bones for their health. However, you should never give cooked chicken bones as they are not safe. The cooked ones can splinter and get stuck in their throats. In fact it is best to keep them away from most cooked bones. You should always choose bones that are right for your dog. Little dogs need little bones. Some chicken bones are very thin and splinter easily. On the other hand they eat birds. The other day I saw my dog eating a small bird that I assume she killed. She just crunched it up, feathers, bones and all. It was gone very fast. If I did not stop her she would hunt my chickens and eat them. Luckily I have taught her not to hunt them and I keep them separate. But raw bones are ok.

Raw bones are okay, but even rib bones are dangerous when cooked because they become brittle and splinter. That's where the danger comes in - the splinter can stick in the dog's throat or cause problems in the stomach. Best to give only raw bones. I give my dog the neck and livers of chickens and only give him a huge bone from a ham. It's too big for him to break up and he eventually buries it.

Hello, As per vet doctors, dogs should not be given bones as it is not good for their digestion. But my dog does not eat his food if bones are not there. So I boil wings of chicken especially for him and one chicken wing which includes small three bones and soup is must for his food.

Yes, dogs do like to chew on bones, but chicken and turkey bones are not good for them. Chicken and turkey bones can shatter while they are being chewed. The little pieces that shatter, get stuck in the intestines, the esophagus, the stomach, and everything else that's included in a dog's digestive system. Do NOT give them chicken bones.

Chicken bones are not good for dogs. Dogs don't chew their food up too good so the chicken bone can splinter and get caught in their throat.

I think it is fine to give dogs the chicken bones. First, it won't be a waste. Second, dogs like eating bones. Perhaps it can practise their teeth. It is still a kind of food. I love China

Hi! whengcat. Chicken bones are not really good for dogs. They can damage their intestines not unlike other bones. Better give your dog other bigger bones except chicken bones. Save your dog from any harm. I also have dogs and I don't give them chicken bones. I give only the chicken meat to them.

The only reason why chicken bones are not good for dogs is because of the splinters and the fear that they may get stuck in the throat. For all other reasons they are excellent. My dog's main food is chicken legs which are pressure cooked and cut into bits. This is mixed with rice and the soup that comes out while pressure cooking the legs. She also gets a good feed of pedigree, some biscuits and milk.

I don't give chicken bones too with my dogs because I know it is not good for them. It is very hard and very pointed which could damage their intestine. Better put it in the trash that lose our beloved pets.

My understanding is that since chicken bones are hollow, they have a tendency to splinter when broken (or when the dog chews them up), it's these sharp splinters that can pierce the throat, lining of the stomach and intestines when the dog swallows and digests them. That's the danger of chicken bones (or any bird-type bone).
