One of my fellow mylotters recently discussed a topic about Internet spyware programs, and that got me thinking about shared public wifi connections You know the kind of wifi in coffee shops and hotel..etc the kind that's free and becoming widely available to the public, and a lot of people use when there out of there homes just how safe is it really? and if we use free public wifi less often are we safer? thanks.

Public networks like those are not very safe, but it also has to do with the settings in your system prior to connecting to them. Shared files etc, there is chance someone who is also connected on the public Wi-Fi could view your shared folders, but always depending on your system settings. Sometimes we just cannot avoid connecting to a hotspot,my advice is when you do connect, do not visit websites that have to do with high security. For example, I would never visit my e-banking account from a public wi-fi. Have a nice day!

Public wifi is always not safe and secure. As these wifi are free from security settings and are available and accessible easily through public hotspots. It is highly recommended that not to use public wifi hotspots for busineess and money transactions,, Further more this can be helpful for simple browsing and chatting.

People know that they need an anti-virus to surf securely under Windows but often don't know that they need also a good firewall to be protected against hackers trying to enter in their computer. A hacker has not to find a door for public wifi, he has just to be on the same zone than his victim : the packets are not encrypted, and they can be captured and read by anybody -- many softwares are freely available --, except if they are encrypted. Public wifi is safe only if you use an encrypted connection. The best is a Virtual Private Network -- VPN -- : all phones and PDAs designed to work with wifi are offering the possibility to configure a VPN, and everybody using public wifi should use a VPN service -- some are freely available -- to be completely safe.

Surely not 100 % secure as your own internet connection. Coz some one may infiltred you with a program and it's going to spy your activity. But there is a program that can block it

i always public wifi if i don't forget to bring gsm modem to access internet at cafe, mall, school or public corner. i used public wifi just for browsing, downloading not any more. since i am aware than public wifi is not safe are. People can use "sniffer" program to collect data on so please be aware almost anything you type or any info that appears on your screen while you are using wireless connection can be seen by others nearby. if you are accessing page requires username and password or entering personal data make sure that you are in secure site. just check the site using "https" for secure protocol. Many website using this protocol for secure login page but after you logged in the access revert to normal non-encrypted mode.

Public Wi-fi is not really safe.. You may not really tell if there are some hackers around that can mess with your accounts.. I have a cousin who used a public wi-fi in checking his FB account.. But when he got home, his account was hacked until he cannot redeem his FB account again.. So if you are going to use public wi-fi, use it with precaution. :)
