Run out of shampoo, what do you use instead?

I did run out of shampoo when I took a bath this morning. So instead I used my body wash! And I used my body puff as well. lol! It was weird. I know, I should have just poured the body wash straight into my hair but the puff was already foamy so I thought, why not? hehehe. It didn't work well, but it's just for the day. I hope I won't forget to buy shampoo today. When you run out of shampoo, what do you use instead? Or do you go back out again just to buy some?

When I was a child and my mom would would run out of shampoo but didn't have enough time to go to the store before it was time to wash our hair, she'd use Dawn soap. The Dawn soap for dishes. And considering they use that stuff on animals caught up in oil spills, I guess it wasn't a bad choice.

They do? I guess it's very effective then. Too bad we don't have them here.

Really, by the sink? I haven't experienced that before. I did experience taking a bath outside with a garden hose. It was fun!

I believe my hair was also washed with Dawn dish soap when I was younger and we'd run out of the other stuff as well. Or when just by the sink and forgot to get the shampoo. I remember bending my knees in a chair or standing on the step stool when i was a little girl to get my hair washed at the sink.

I sometimes would use my body wash when I didn't have enough shampoo, but I don't have to worry about that now since I don't have any hair. I can't picture using the puff to put it on my head though. I used to like to have a lot of lather when washing my hair. I can't wait to get my hair back!!!

Oh I'm so sorry daeckardt. This really puts me into perspective. My problem with shampoo isn't really a problem after all. Have a good day to you too. Get well soon!

What happened to your hair? Did you get a very short cut? Or some medical condition? I hope your hair grows back soon. So you can lather it up again. I also like a lot of lather on my hair.

I have been in chemotherapy since March. I started shedding within a week of the first session so I got my hair cut short. A week later I had little hairs all over the shower so I used clippers and got it as short as they would get it. It will take about 3-4 weeks after my last session before it starts growing back again and it will be like a baby's hair (at least the last time I went through chemo it did). Of course, last time around it wasn't until after the third treatment that I even started losing my hair so I'm just guessing that it will come back in the same way. Just two more sessions to go! Have a great day!!!

Hi swirlz!!!! That's must have really felt weird! I have never done that. I never let myself run out of shampoo. But there are times when the remaining shampoo is too little and not enough for my hair. I just use what's available. I never dare to use a body wash or soap or anything beside shampoo on my hair. If I ran out of shampoo, I'll probably just not use anything at all. I'll just shampoo later when I'm able to buy a refill. Cheers.

No, actually. My hair is not pretty. I have falling hair actually that's why I don't want to make it worst by using anything other than shampoo.

I couldn't use body soap or dish soap on my hair... I'd be terrified it would dry out and break off. Co-washing generally works pretty well for me, although I don't think I've ever run out of shampoo like that. I'd much rather wash with conditioner or olive oil. I tend to have oilier hair as well, but surprisingly enough, it doesn't leave my hair greasy or heavy or gross. I rinse thoroughly and air dry and my hair is sooo soft afterward, much like a baby's hair or a bunny, lol. And it gets rid of any sweat, product (not that I use much anyway), and anything else that managed to attach itself to my strands. Smells pretty darn good too.

Surprisingly enough, it doesn't! I'm not sure why, but it seems to get my hair cleaner than rinsing alone, provided there's no product buildup. Just rinse well. It's a lot like washing with conditioner (co-washing).

Olive oil? But wouldn't that make your hair and scalp oilier?

Yeah, a bar of soap is among the worst I've used too. A ponytail or a bun really is a savior for bad hair days.

When I ran out of shampoo few months ago, I used body wash for like a couple of days. However, my hair was so dry and frizzy. My mom wasn't able to buy a new bottle of shampoo, but we have sachets of conditioner. So in order to get rid of my dry and frizzy hair I rinsed it again, applied conditioner for a couple of minutes and rinsed my hair again.. I found out that using body wash with conditioner is almost the same as using shampoo. So I used body wash and conditioner for a week until we had a new bottle shampoo.. ^_^

Yes, conditioner would solve that problem. But I'd rather still use shampoo rather than body wash. lol.

You're right.. Just as I thought so. ^_^ Shampoo is meant for the hair and body wash is meant for the body.. makes sense to me.. ahehehe

In my guest house room there is a body wash that is also shampoo so that is handy. I have brought travel bottles of my the shampoo and conditioner that I use at home. If I was at home and I ran out of shampoo I would use the almost empty shampoo bottle and add a tiny bit of water. Then I would put that on my hair. If the bottle had been thrown away I would use body wash on my hair. I think that conditioner would be great to put on my hair afterwards. I have got some old bottles of shampoo that I could use like mint that stings my head in a refressing way. I would buy my favorite shampoo as soon as possible after running out of it.

If I were you, I would put some water into the shampoo bottle and you will get the new shampoo again. It is just not so thick but it can work well anyway. It is better than taking the body wash to wash your hair:) I love China

But I'm only using sachets as of the moment, and it's difficult to pour water into it. But you're right, pouring water into shampoo bottles would work to get some shampoo out, my mom used to do that back home.

One time I used body wash in my hair, it's ok, it's just like shampoo. For me if I don't have shampoo or any body wash I prefer to use powdered soap... much better than bath soap or no shampoo at all. Have a good day.

Powdered soap, as in the one used for laundry? lol! How do you apply powdered soap to your hair?

You can make your own shampoo from items you already have in the house. 2 eggs (medium size) 2 oz. water 1 tbsp. lemon juice or apple cider vinegar Water is not to be hot or the eggs will set. You can also make dry shampoos with corn starch, baking soda and even use plain talcum powder (baby powder). Just rub into the hair roots and brush out.

Thanks for sharing. That would be a good idea for some other time. As of now, I'm just renting a room so I don't have other household stuff. But I'll definitely try it out when I do, and when I run out of shampoo again.

I have never run out of shampoo since I buy two big bottles at Sam's Club and they last me six months. I did not know that one could use regular dish soap if one runs out of shampoo. I am also trying to grow my hair long since the last time I got it cut the lady cut my hair too short. It was her fault because she was not paying attention and accdently cut too much off. I was mad because I did not want too much taken off.

You shouldn't go back to that salon. Wow you buy two big bottles of shampoo? Now that's weird. I have only experienced buying two big bottles of mouthwash but that is only because the second one comes at only a peso's worth after you buy the first. lol! Is that how it is with the shampoo you buy? Or do you buy them at full price, at the same time, no sale whatsoever?

The only choice in my bathroom would be my body wash like yours. I have come accross the above situation for several times and I was forced to use my body wash to have my hair washed. But soon I realised that the condition of my hair become worse, that is, it became quite dry and not very smooth when I was combing it. I did quite a lot of treatment after that in order to have my hair returned to normal condition. I am sure I will avoid using a body wash to wash my hair in the future.

soap would be the second best to shampoo, although most people say soap would hearm your hair badly, but it does work slightly the same way as shampoo does. Best is if you can go out to buy some shampoo, but sometimes, you dont wear back your clothes just because you firgure you didnt have shampoo and still needed a bath

I would also use the body wash, because I really doubt the ingredients of it are much different than that of a shampoo's. However, since I am a man and sooner or later I will be suffering from hair loss, I try to go buy a real shampoo as soon as possible. Have a nice day!

does it really affect what we use on our hair that would get us bald in the long run? wahhh i don't want to get bald. though i know it happens mostly to men, there is still a possibility that it happens to women too right?

Hmm let's see, when I run out of shampoo I just scrub my head with my fingers to get dirt and grime out, and then rinse it and put conditoner in. I don't like using any other kind of soap because I don't want my hair dried out. However now they are starting to make body washes that can be used as shampoo and / or conditioner as well. Of course they have the 2 in 1 stuff as well. I like to buy the 2 in 1 stuff in the head and shoulders brand, I don't have dandruff or anything but I do have dry skin on my head, and I've dyed my hair a lot so it helps.

hello swirlz, I use the conditioner when i run out of shampoo. I always have the habit of checking the stuff before i take a bath because it happens to me before that there is no more shampoo when i am already wet and no time to go out and buy shampoo,so,i use the conditioner. Since then i always check for shampoo and soaps before getting into the shower.

hi jaiho. that's a good habit i think i'll be learning now. lol! i don't like using conditioner without shampooing first because my hair would get greasier and would feel heavier. i'd only get a headache after.

I use body soap when I run out of shampoo. I just hate that I have to put a lot on since my hair is long and thick. Dish soap is actually a good replacement for shampoo. It get's my hair really clean but it can be over drying sometimes. Sometimes I leave the shampoo bottle and I just pour water inside and then pour the bottle over my head.

I use to do that too, but right now I'm using sachets. So no chance of doing that. I didn't know dish soap could be used for the hair. I had a friend back in high school, she used dish soap for her face, she had a breakout! I guess it's because like you say, it over dried the skin.
