uma my granddaughter - my grand daughter in fancy dress
India
June 14, 2011 4:12am CST
Friends in my previous discussion, ‘Mother earth menstruates staring today’, http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2540989.aspx?p=0 I have said, numerous competitions and fairs are organized during the period of 3 days. Though it is not a festival in my part of Orissa state, there was celebration like dance competition, fancy dress competition etc. my granddaughter Munu , see picture, was dressed like a bride, she is 12 only, she got the first prize. In dance competition, I saw girls aged 5-12, dancing in tune to recorded songs from modern Hindi movies. They were wearing bra and panty like stuff, the songs were so vulgar, one was, ‘Sheela ki Jawani..’; the girls don’t know fully the meaning of these vulgar songs, but the parents know very well.. The worst thing was the parents were there enjoying the scene. I am totally against this unhealthy trend; no doubt the girls get spoiled. Do you agree with me? Please respond, add your thoughts. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘*Bhuwan*’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

first of all Congrats !!! on this festival and also for the first prize won by your grand daughter ..its very shameful that parents make their kids dress up in such a way and feel proud for their performances....why do they forget the Indian culture and why can't they find such a wide variety of dress-ups in the Indian culture..i think they should refresh their knowledge about the tradition and culture of India and pick some dresses like punjabi, kashmiri, manipuri etc etc...

hi eshaan and professor I do agree withyou both and am thinking the parents are aping perhaps hollywood stars or bollywood stars, anyway its so wrong.children of that age are being pushed much too early into stuff that young people in their twenties ordinarkly did and even then here in the US their parents were rather shocked. kids are not allowed to be kids, not minature adults. Here in the U S some mothers have p ushed really little girls into beauty pageants dressing them in way inappropriate clothing and cosmetics meant for adult women. I think its terrible and borders on child abuse as they push these little kids into all this just for the titles and the money prized. its awful.

Like you said, they're just kids. So just let yourself a bit loose and watch their talent as a dancer. Of course their parents are nuts, but there are so many things in this world that's simply outrageous and we just can't do anything about them. This is just a simple issue. The kids will naturally grow more matured than their parents else they'll become nuts like them. It's their destiny. We can't change that, can we? (inspired from one of your previous comments)

We certainly can't change our destiny, I was worried because the parents of the gals who were dancing looked so proud? Thanks for sharing God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘@Bhuwan@’. .

And it's the parents' destiny to be idiots who can't be helped. But they're necessary in the society. Else a lot of words will become useless in our vocabulary. :-P Outrageous people have always been in the history of mankind. I don't think that we can do anything about it other than what we are doing right now in discussions like this.

I definitely agree with you. Morals have dropped so steeply in the past couple of decades. I cannot accept some of the things people, especially young girls, are wearing these days as everyday clothing. When I was in school, the girls were made to wear dresses or skirts. We weren't even allowed to wear loose pants. No jeans, no shorts, nothing like that. We had to be properly attired or we were sent home with a note and had to have a parent bring us back to school with the proper dress. These days, I'm shocked at what is allowed in schools. They seem more like social meeting places than teaching facilities. When I noticed that the schools my kids were going to had police officers stationed in them, I looked at other schools and all of them had police in them. I am also appalled at the parents who allow their children to go out to any event, be it school, festivals, anything, in some of the clothing (or lack of clothing) they wear. Also, some of the songs the younger generation is listening to is not anything I would listen to and I'd never approve of much of it. If I were raising young children today, I honestly don't know what I would do. I think I would have to home-school them to at least keep them from some of today's immoral influences and show them by example that being good and decent has many more advantages.

I fully agree with you things are changing fast, but as parents we can control our kids, put them in right track from young age, my grandkids read in very good schools, the fees are high though, but no chance of going in wrong track.. Thanks for the detailed response God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘@Bhuwan@’. .

Dear Professor It is like the baby beauty pageants here where so many parents are okay with the so very young girls competing in such activities. It is not a good think to allow the children to grow up too fast. I can understand competitions but when they make they up to look so grown, I feel it is not right. Children need to enjoy their childhood to the fullest, there is plenty of time to be grown later in life. I find that your grand-daughter is so beautiful, many blessings Professor.

Kids should be kids and not forced to grow up too fast. It's not right. Some adults think it's cute to dress little girls up in clothes meant for adults. Kids need to be kids. Some people just don't know what's appropriate behavior any more.

hi professor yes it does not sound good to me either as girls of that young age 5 to 12 are impressionable and in bras and pantie like garments that sounds way too adult and provocative for little children.whatever are the parents thinking, can they be upholding that sort of dress as thats just all wrong. Kids that age are just children so why try to make adults out of them.I do hope they really do not know what those vulgar songs are all about. I agree this is in my eyes is just plain wrong.let them first be children and not be aping adult movie actresses.,

I know what you mean. There are what they call Beauty pageants here that are almost sickening sometimes. The lengths that parents go to make sure their child is chosen fall under the category of insanity. There are girls as young as two that are made to wear makeup and wigs..they are taken to tanning beds and there was even a story recently where ,I think she was 7, a woman was getting her daughter Botox treatments!!!! I think the doctor who allowed it should be punished along with the mom. It is crazy the way they act.

Well that's really how teenagers behave nowadays. They don't really care anymore about what's vulgar or not, they just wanna have fun. Or maybe you're just being too uptight on this. Maybe the meaning of the song has nothing to do with their dancing. Sometimes the tunes are great but the lyrics aren't so maybe they were really after the tune or the beat of the song and not the whole meaning.

Firstly,I congratulate you on your granddaughter winning the first prize. However I fall in with your views.I think if we both have the conservative ideas and don't advance with times. In my opinion,Your granddaughter did have natural gift in this respect, but she should put emphasis on broadening her knowledge, instead of prematurely setting foot in performing circles .I hope I don't speak out of turn.
