This news item caught my eye today. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110613/pl_afp/usmilitaryuniform The US Army is no longer wearing the beret. It got me thinking about all the silly headgear that is worm by military personnel around the world. There are some really crazy ones if you look for them. In a time when very few men wear hats at all, and women only wear them on special occasions, is a military style hat even necessary in peacetime? If you had to wear a hat, because of your job, what type would you prefer? What is the silliest hat that you have ever seen on a policeman or military person?

Since I read the "pioneer Camember", one of the first French comics, when I was a child, I know that common sense and army are two different things, and it is a miracle that somebody thought that a cap was better than a woolen beret when the US army is mainly in Iraq and Afghanistan. I hope that if they have to go in Antarctica tomorrow, it will take less to give them another hat, before they get a cold. Each country has/had some weird military hats, and the choice is difficult, but I have a slight preference for the Evzone hat in Greece to be nominated among the silliest military hats.

Compared to the skirt and stockings, the Evzone hat is almost sensible! Raising your feet to ear level in that uniform must take a lot of guts!

If we speak of the complete uniform, the Evzone uniform is certainly the winner.

Poor Evzones are being tear-gassed by the police today, so they still remain at their post regardless of dress. Brave fellows!

Actually right away when I read this I thought about the Palace Guards in England. Those hats are insane and are probably really hot to wear. Not to mention if they had to actually do any guarding where they had to move the hat would probably fall off and impede their movements. If I had to wear a hat I would prefer just a visor type thing, or a baseball cap.

Oh I so agree with you. Some of the berets they make the guys wear are just plain silly looking. I fell sorry for the guys. I don't like hats at all but I can see they are ok with some uniforms. Just not berets....

Well the ladies get some strangely designed hats too! Wasn't the beret a female fashion way back in the black & white movie era?

I don't know why the US Army ever implemented the beret across the service, in the first place. Well actually I do, because supposedly the beret was to make the soldier feel more elite, like the Green Beret (now called SF, or Special Forces). Since I was once in the Army (pre-beret fashion era), we wore the soft brim cap (that is used today in deployments). Those hats were perfectly fine, they kept the sun out of your eyes, kept you cool and were comfortable. I think the Army is the only service that has gone through many, perhaps un-needed fashion changes. Yes hats are necessary for the military during peace time, because of the reasons I mentioned above. If you're going to be spending a great deal outside, and need to have good visual acuity, you need a good hat, not a fashion statement.
