I have a Toshiba laptop that I bought less then a year ago. It has Windows 7 on it. The last few days i noticed that when it is plugged in, it won't charge....and the icon says exactly that: plugged, not charging. I have looked online and it seems this is common with Toshiba. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? This is my first laptop, so I don;t know anything about them. I have taken out my battery for the first time....put it back in hoping that it would work....to not avail. I have read about BIOS. This is beyond me.

The very same thing happened to me, it is very common with Toshiba laptops for this to happen; the only way I found was to take it into a computer store near me where they fixed it for just £80- £150 less than a major High Street store offered me to fix it. I have not bought another Toshiba again because of this issue, my laptop broke within eight months or so of purchase- horribly annoying and costly for me! It can have something to do with the wiring inside and they may need to shift around of the components inside the laptop- if you have a friend who does computers then I'm sure he sort it out for you.

I used to have a Toshiba laptop that had the screen break down about a year after purchase. We tried to have it refurbished and returned according to the warranty, but it didn't work. My suggestion for you is to buy a new battery that will fit your laptop. It could also be that the cord you're using has wires frayed inside the plastic coating and not working, so you might want to see if it's the battery or the cord. Good Luck!

I don't have a Toshiba and it can really be a number of things. I can tell you that my laptop which is a Dell, was not charging the battery for over a year. I continued to use it plugged in and a couple months ago I removed the batter and placed it back in and Viola, for some reason it was not sitting right. Sounds like the battery is malfunctioning. My understanding is that laptop batteries depending on the usage usually last anywhere between 3-4 years. I own mine now for 2 and thus far it is charging fully. Since it has been a year do you think you can contact the manufacturer and maybe email explaining? This might be under warranty with the manufacturer. I would think if it is only one year. Unless it is stipulated that batteries are not covered. But seriously one year seems too short of time.

Well this can arise due to several reasons including the battery setting but mostly it is due to battery failure. My own laptop charges upto 95% and then say " battery 95% full, plugged in, not charging". well just take your laptop to a service center if under warranty because batteries start declining in their power capacity within one year of its use.

I think gabzreal is right.Try turning your laptop on, just using the AC power. If it works then it's just the battery.

I have been told by one repairman that you need to consider getting a new battery after about one year. My first laptop got damaged by a storm and I thought it was a battery issue but it was not. Nonetheless, this is what he said for most laptops is one, two years max on a battery. I seldom go on battery power, prefer to be plugged in when possible, but it sounds like this is your only option until you replace the battery.

So the electricity will work, the battery just won't charge? The problem that I've had with every laptop expect this one (knock on wood!!) is the little nub that the cord plugs into somehow loosens, and I couldn't even get it to work on electricity. AARRGGHH. Atleast yours can work plugged in (or that's the impression I got from reading this). Good luck.

I am not an expert on this but I think your battery is the problem. There is definitely no problem with your wiring and your power supply since it indicates plug. Battery usually wore out especially if you continue to charge it when it is full. Perhaps you should try to drain your battery until there is no more power. Then charge it to the usual standard time of charging. If it does not work, then have the battery check from the supplier and see it if needs to be replaced.

My Toshiba doesn't charge either, but it's not that new and it says it's charging but it's not because my battery is fried. It's because I left it plugged in all the time once my son was in the hospital. You have to let it run out every once in awhile or the battery goes out on them and will not charge. You'll need to buy a new battery probably.

I have the same problem with my laptop, but since my laptop is in bad condition anyways, I'm saving money for a new laptop. But, to solve your problem, your battery is probably broken. You can buy a 6-cell battery for at least $60.

If you have been using the laptop in this mode, i.e "plugged in" but not charging, then it probably means that it is actually charging but not showing a charging indicator. it is very unlikely that, without charging, your battery will last a few days. My battery lasts only a few hours. If you put in the battery, plug in the charger, and the computer works ok, I would suggest you do not worry about it.

Mostly, batteries are under warranty for 1 year. So I suggest, call the manufacturer and ask for assistance on how to replace it for free.
