Long flights

My longest flights have been around 14 hours long. When I was 21 years old I flew from Singapore to London on Qantas. I flew when I was 28 years old from London to Hong Kong on British Airways. Both times I was lucky enough to get extra leg room. On the flight from Singapore I was sitting at the front of economy class and I was on crutches. On the flight from London I sat by an emergency exit. Earlier this year I took my 3 year old disabled son and my 1 year old daughter on flights London to Cartagena De Indias via Madrid and Bogota. On that we had a 2 hour delay, two missed connections and a delay of our hold baggage. That was an exhausting journey but arriving there it was like paradise. I love a historical city close to palm fringed beaches. What has been your longest flight? How long was its duration? Have you got a favorite airline? Did you ever have a missed connection or delay to your flight?

I can't remember right now the number of hours, but my flight to New Zealand from Frankfurt via Singapore must have been at least twenty hours long. I really ejoyed it, though: even if I wasn't as lucky as you (no extra leg room for me!) the flight was great. On the Qantas Jumbo they served us an excellent dinner, ice cream and dessert and a delicious cup of hot chocolate. Plus, they were always checking if everything was ok and they offered us some fruit and a bag with snacks and candies. Furthermore, Qantas 747 fleet is equipped with one of the most advanced in-flight entertainment systems I've ever seen, so movies and games were on my screen during the whole trip. This answers your second question as well: my favourite airline is Qantas. Unfortunately I seldom get the chance to fly with them, so I generally choose Lufthansa: they have relatively low fares on long flights, they can get you almost everywhere and the service is always perfect. Not to mention the great entertainment (almost like on Qantas planes) and the safety record (great job of both LH and Technik). Sadly here in Italy we don't have such great companies. Alitalia once was a great airline, but now it's lost almost everything. I'm studying to become a pilot, so it would be great to have a good airline in my country. About missing a flight, it happened to me only once. It was a Ryanair flight that should have taken us back home. We were slightly late (no more than five minutes) but check-in had already been closed, so our flight departed without us. Spending a night at Heathrow on a bench was not a great experience...

It is amazing that you are training to become a pilot. Good luck to Alitalia because Italy needs a fantastic airline. I have heard that Lufthansa is an excellent airline. Entertainment is important on a long plane ride. I remember watching four movies from London to Los Angeles which was 12 hours. I was with my oldest son traveling on Ryanair. We arrived at the last minute and had to get on the plane straight away. It was awful to arrive in Sardinia and find the currency exchange desk closed. Thanks for your excellent response.

Yep, Ryanair is not exactly the kind of airline that waits for late passengers :) Thanks for your reply!

ha! ha! When you mention about the longest flight, you make me to recall my bad experience in the past. The longest flight I went was my first experience to travel by flight. The whole journey was more than 20 hours. It was too long and I couldn't figure out the exact traveling hours at that time. It was a direct flight from my country to the United States. During the long hours flight at the economic seat, I could only sleep, eat, watch movie and walk from my seat to the wash room routinely. After this flight experience, I never dare to travel by direct flight anymore. Among the flight companies I traveled as United Airlines, Japan Airline(JAL), Malaysia Airline (MAS) and Singapore Airline, the most I liked was the Japan Airline. The worst I disliked was the Singapore Airline. At that time when I traveled from Los Angeles to Singapore and transited to Malaysia with Singapore Airline, the service was very bad and immature. The steward and the stewardess were joking and laughing during their service. Accidentally, the water was poured and wet my trousers. I did miss a domestic flight. Luckily, I were managed to travel by another flight in few hours later.

Cabin crew are meant to act very professionally and friendly. The ones you had on the Singapore Airlines were silly to be laughing and joking around. I found Qantas cabin crew try to please their passengers and succeed. My flight from London to Hong Kong had many loud teenagers on it. I found that a tiring trip so I was grateful for the extra leg room. When flying through many time zones I end up suffering jet lag. I felt ill arriving in Colombia with all the stress of delay and lost baggage. I have a vegan diet and many airlines don't offer that at all. Therefore I eat before I get on the plane and take a few snacks in my hand luggage. I often pack in my hold luggage a bottle of water. Then on arrival I have water to use.

I have flown from the US to South Korea (22 hours) and have always traveled Coach. I do like to get up and move around, which I was able to do every few hours. I never minded the long flights.

I am glad that you have never minded having such long flights like 22 hours long. When I traveled to Australia I know I couldn't have faced 24 hours with a refueling stop. Instead I stopped over and had an adventure on my way.

The longest flight I have done is to Thailandat 11.5hrs and then followed by Cuba at 10.5hrs and LA at 10.5hrs. I don't mind long flights as long as I have a good book wth me as I can never sleep!

Hello Frankie. Taking a good book to read on a long plane ride is a superb idea. The trip to Thailand involved a long flight of over 11 hours. I would love to fly off to Cuba. Going by plane from London to LA I am hit with jet lag. However on the flight from London to Cape Town I didn't have that due to it being on a similar time zone.

I have not really on a long flight before like you. The longest I had just about 4 hours and that itself have made me felt really uncomfortable throughout the flight. I was having a middle sit and I have to bend my leg all the time. The only thing I can do was to put my leg on the walk way or walk around. I cannot imagine how suffering it will be if I have to take a 14 hours flight. So far, I only fly with 3 airline before, the Malaysia Airline, Singapore Airline and The Air Asia. Air Asia is the worst since the sit space is so small that I have to bend my leg all the time. My favorite airline will be Singapore Airline. They have a really good service and I really enjoy my journey with SIA.

I like to have the window seat, my daughter the middle seat and my disabled son the aisle seat. Sometimes I don't get a plane that has 3-5-3 seat formation in economy. I find 2-5-2 an awful seat formation. In that case couples tend to get the window seat and the seat next to it. I hate getting a middle seat. Some airlines offer very little leg room. I have Singapore Airlines is excellent so I must go on them sometime. I would also like to try out Emirates. It is a shame you were uncomfortable on the 4 hour plane trips.

My longest flight has been from Milan to New York via Copenhagen. It takes more or less 11 hours. The flight company I don't remember very well...maybe SAS. I didn't like it, was very long and boring and the seat after a while was uncomfortable. This was the only long flight, other flights are maximum 2 hours long. I don't have a favourite airline, generally I use the cheapest: Ryanair or Easyjet. I've never missed connection, but I had some delays. Especially the first flight to Albania were always delayed of at least 1 hour. Now they are a little better.

I find it hard to understand the price of Easy Jet and Ryan Air. They like people to book much in advance and not take any hold luggage it would seem. It was a shame that your seat on the 11 hour trip wasn't too comfortable. I sat on the plane for two hours wondering about the lack of announcements. Then all of a sudden it took off but then it arrived in Madrid after my flight to Bogota had departed. I am pleased it was just a one hour delay for the flight to Albania.

Oh gosh, 14 hours flight is such an awesome journey for me! It's a contradiction maximax8, I love travelling, but I hate riding on plane for that long time. A 4 hours or so flight is still bearable. It's really a torture for me to spend about 8 hours flight when I visited Turkey 3 years back. It's the longest flight I had been experiencing so far I joust can't imagine how terrible it would be if I have to spend longer time on the distant flight to visit European countries. Therefore I dared not join my group of friends visiting Spain and its adjacent countries end of last year. There are two airlines which I usually like to board for their well service and reasonable price. It's fortunate that I haven't come across any missed connection or delay at my flights Have a nice day

Two..one to Hawaii which I believe was 8 hours long....and one from Amsterdam to Mpls....that one was about 8 1/2 hours long. I have never missed a connection though I thought I was going to once...and ran across the airport in Amsterdam trying to get to my flight which had started boarding before I left the last terminal...I told them...you better call and tell them I am coming! Turns out they were just boarding early...

It was lucky that they were just boarding the plane early. Therefore you didn't miss your flight at Amsterdam. I remember my flight to Hawaii and arriving in the middle of the night. I had similar flight times in other Pacific Ocean destinations. I didn't mind due to them being paradise like places.

A few years ago, when my son was just over a year old, we flew from here to Asia to attend a wedding. It was 17 hours on the plane! It was so tiring, and I didn't get enough sleep because my son was still small not to get his own seat, but big enough to really make me comfortable with him sitting on my lap.

I didn't miss a connection flight, and I have many times in delay though. When I was flying from Atlanta to mainland China, it was more than 16 hours. This year, I went to China once again, the flight from United States to South Korea, it was like 14 hours. I stay there overnight in a Hilton hotel. Then from South Korea to Mainland China for 3 hours.

I heard a story from a dying man in hospital. He flew from Karachi to Dhaka when it was British India. The old propeller plane took 12 hours to get there. It was a cargo plane, so he went to see one of those four hour long Indian movies in a cinema while it was being unloaded and reloaded. Then he flew back - another twelve hours. You have probably guessed already, he was the pilot! Apparently, he did that twice a week for many years! Makes my five hour journeys look like nothing!

It must have been sad to speak to a dying man in hospital. That pilot did a 12 hour flight from Karachi to Dhaka and only had a few hours to rest before flying again. Yes, some pilots fly cargo planes. I know what you mean about a 5 hour plane journey seeming like hardly anything at all.

Good Evening dear friend maximax8 , well after reading your travelling story here , id actually made me a little anxious thinking and planning my future vacation , wich is to be actually pretty honest not in July but in end on Semptember , and i'm flyin' also , but not such a long flight as you have just made , i am only flying to Senegal ( This will be my second trip there ) , and uts true though' it is not as long ( from hour duration point of view ) my flight its only taken me six straight hours , wich cann be long , but they again do not compare with you flight hourly duration , well next year i am planning to visit some old friends in heard of Texas/Arizona , and thats gonna be a reall hard flight for me , makes me think that it might be verry similar to your flight adventure when you went from Singapore to London ( God i really hope it will be less longfull lowl ) Aniway i am really sure it was worth it. Welcome to My Lot. Good luck with your flight to Senegal. A similar flight duration is to the Gambia from my home country. It is much nearer Europe than the Caribbean Islands. They take around 10 hours to get to. It is lovely that next year you are planning to fly to Texas or Arizona. Have a wonderful day.
