Worst-ever outbreak of E.coli strain in humans

Recently Germany witnessed the worst-ever outbreak of E.coli strain in humans recorded so far in the medical history of man which even took a number of human lives. The strain known as 0104:H4 is a rare one, seen in humans before, but never in this kind of outbreak. Experts advise only supportive therapy including hydration. Antibiotics should not be used as there is no evidence that they can be helpful. What is most important is total avoidance of consumption of raw vegetables. In my opinion it is the best policy to be adopted by all throughout the world to prevent the spread of the disease as ‘prevention is better than cure’. What is your opinion in this regard?

You cannot prevent people from eating raw fruit and vegetables. There is so much good to be gained from them and the healthful benefits FAR outweigh the dangers, which are due to poor and money-grabbing farming techniques. What can and should be done is to ensure that water supplies and soil used for growing and washing the vegetables are clean and healthy. This is just another incident which is ultimately due to the mass production and distribution of vegetables and salad crops. Prevention is certainly better than cure but it should be the farmers and the Food standards authorities who should be preventing it, NOT the consumers.

But I think the consumers should have to be cautious for their own interest as they are the ultimate sufferers.

I would not like to avoid raw vegatables forever, I wash mine very well and try to buy only from farms that I know. I think sprouts ended up being the carrier and I think sprouts often are guilty of being poorly cleaned. It's easy to avoid this problem because anyone can grow their own with a glass jar and a screened top, it takes about a week to get nice sprouts to eat and you control the whole process. You can buy the seeds at any health food store or order on line.

Or you can buy from a Chinese store. Traditional bean sprout seeds are called Mung Beans. Or there are many other types of sprouting seeds.

hi doctor didi thats awful and I am wondering if these people just omitted common sense and did not wash their produce before making 'salads or whatever dishes that they consumed raw.I feel that while ecoli strain is prevalent in soil one can and must wash all vegetabiles even the ones you cook. Iwould be they just cut them up and ate them. not intelligent at all.people need raw fruit and veggies but be clean. add a few drops of dish soap to a lot of water wash and rinse, wash and rinse.e coli can be washed away but so many people are either too lazy or too stupid to do that. even produce from ones own garden must be washed and rinsed and washed again to be clean and free from soil and any contaminants. i do not think if you really clean your produce you will get ill. meanwhile those growers should be aware of the soild they are growing produce in also. any steps they can to prevent e coli in the first place is even better.

Yes, they probably forgot the basics of hygiene that vegetables should always be washed properly and thoroughly with pure and safe water.

I think people all over take it for granted that things are clean and they aren't. When I was young I would just go out to the garden and pick a carrot or whatever and eat it. Now days even buying from the co-op or fruit stand down the road. You just never know. Many gardening shows on tv will explain to people how to wash and how well they need to wash before consumption but people don't listen. They just don't take it seriously until something bad happens like this.

I think the most important is, always wash very clean all the vegetables and fruit before we are to consume them. I always soak my vegetables and fruits before i finally washed clean them and eat. But i still feel the best way is to cook all the vegetables before consume them. Because i also agreed that we should prevent ourselves from falling ill. Because waiting for cure takes time and risky, too.

Hello, I am not from medicine back ground so I don't know about it. But it is not possible to avoid raw vegietables and fruits. It is my opinion that our immunity system depends on our living habit. I know some person who are living in slums. They use water or any foods which is bit by rates or dogs but they have never any type of infection. I think it is not possible for a person who is living in hygenic locations. So it is not necessary what was happen in Germany repeat in any other country.
