My cereal find

K-mart had paper towels & toilet paper on sale thru last night. Since we were part way there we stopped over for the last day of the sale. On my way to the aisle I notice their reduced rack. I hardly look because they have not had very many mark downs on food or anything in the past year so so... I looked just because the display was there. I bout fell over but they had Cinnamon Toast Crunch (12oz) at .87, Trix (sm box) .82 and cheerio's (15oz box?) for $1.07! They were coming to a close on their "sell by" date and I thought cereal lasts for a while so I'm sure it's fine and the kids will wolf most of the sweetened stuff first in the next day or so. I paid roughly $11 for 11 boxes! Now Aldi sells a similar size for $1.69 for their brand and those I bought were national brands that normally sell for over $3. I think I did well! I'm hoping the small bagged cereal will be there in a few days as it was marked down but not as far as the national brands I got and I'll have more room in my pantry by then & hopefully some money still.

You really got a great deal! I am always checking the reduced rack at the supermarkets I go to and on occasion I will find a great deal as well. It is always nice when it is something you would buy normally or something you have been wanting to try but not wanting to pay full price just to try out. One time they had the big packs of toilet paper marked down like 75% , there were about 3 or 4 packages so I got all of them and saved a bundle. you never know what you will find so I always take a few minutes to check it out!!!

That's a partly good bargain! I hope you didn't buy the sugar-laden cereals--they are delicious but sooooo bad for our kids! (Sorry, I just had to say it. My kids didn't even know Fruit Loops existed till they started school) Did you know that you can take the cereal out of the box (or not) and freeze it? It'll keep for up to a year if you leave it sealed till you need it then don't put it back in the freezer. And the sell-by dates on most foods are mostly for inventory purposes--dairy and perishables are the exception--so that cereal is probably good for a couple of years! That should tell you to always look, even if you don't think you'll find anything. What a bargain you got!

Yes, I know half of them were sugared. However, they don't usually get that stuff because things like cheerios (store brand usually) are cheaper per ounce. I did not know that you could freeze cereal. I wouldn't doubt it just never thought of it. Plus if I had a deep freezer that would make the difference for sure!

I can't imagine buying that much cereal at one time! Of course, I live alone and in a motel room so I make it a point to only buy one box at a time. I don't particularly care for the sugar cereals, but if someone gives it to me, I will eat it. The closest I come is raisin bran. I'm glad you were able to get such a good deal on your purchase! Have a great weekend!!!

Great bargain! I have to admit, I am a bit jealous...as I love a great bargain. :-) My kids and hubby can go through cereal so quickly, that the sell by date would never be an issue in our house. Cereal does last longer than what the box tells you anyways. I think I may have to run by my K-Mart today to see if they have the same bargains. Thanks for sharing your great deal!

We got thru cereal pretty fast here too especially if it tastes better than cheerios. Mine were just bargains because they were close to expiring. I used to find deals all the time at another one a bit further away, but then they didn't have anything in the past year. Sometimes no mark down cart at all. But that one I used to find national name brands for less than Aldi sold things! Alas it's a rare find anymore.

There are many foods that last well over past thir sell by date., specially if you have a place in your home where the temperature and humidity are adecuate. Other stuff I would not buy, such as dairy products or cans. Grains and legumes last a long time, but gt tougher as time goes by and need more cooking time. Anyway, and although this post is not about that, I would not let my kids eat quantities of sweetened stuff. They get addicted to sugar and that is the road to obesity. It is not my saying: check it online.

It's true that cereals last well beyond their sell by dates. I have some that have been in my kitchen cupboards for well over a year. Still perfectly good! Unfortunately, my family doesn't regularly eat cereals for breakfast - I know, you've already guessed that!

My kids usually eat cereal for a snack rather than a "meal" and yes they do last for some time so I figured why not? Not that these will last in my house as it's summer and kids inhale food in summer for sure!

You sure did a great job. I missed that sale! I wish K-Mart had coupons on their site like Target does. Love to save more.

What a find! I love to find good deals on food. I already figure I know where I'll be doing most of my shopping, that is Kmart and Dollar General. I can get a discount from kmart, and so that's always a bonus too!

That is definitely an awesome deal that you were able to get on the cereal. If it was my house, that cereal would have all been gone within a week at the most because of the fact that the children are so incredibly addicted to cereal. The only thing that would have made that a better deal would have been if you had had coupons on some of the cereals that they had on clearance, in that case they might have been paying you to take the cereal out of the store.

Great bargain Wow yes I like to see sales like that when it comes to cereal as I am like your kids here and do enjoy a bowl of dry cereal from time to time as a snack. lol Not really the very sweet ones but still I do enjoy them and at that price being that they do last long you did great. I have moments like that too and it always seems to catch me when I am low on money too, and then when I go back they are either all gone and or the sale is out.

You got a good deal. i wish I could have been there. my kids love the name brand cereal and they eat it like its candy. Do not even worry about the sell by date I work at a grocery store and it will still be good after the date. Grocery stores just can not keep it because they can get in really big trouble for having out of date foods on the shelf.

Those are great buys! I would enjoy finding those too and I would certainly have bought them. We eat a lot of cereal around here so I would buy as many as I could. Cereal will stay good past the sell by date and so you got a great deal!
