How Early is Too Early to Cut the lawn?

Today is Sunday and my next door neighbor started mowing his lawn at 8:00 AM. I think that was kind of rude because a lot of people like to sleep in on Sundays. I don't think anyone with close by neighbors should mow their lawn until 9:00 AM. What do you think? How early is too early to mow the lawn?

I never cut mine before 9am, for several reasons. One is that the morning dew would have the grass wet. Also on Sundays, gosh though I was up early when I owned my home, I could not imagine going outdoors so early and waking the neighbors. I always did so after 9 or even 10am. Seems to me that one wants to be neighborly and something like noise can cause a lot of friction to the others.

That is the comment I made, why would anyone cut the grass that early with all the dew on the ground? My dad had always told me and now my husband, that to cut wet grass is bad for the blades and can clog it up because the grass isn't shot out, but clumps up under the deck...

That is true, plus it also damages the lawn too, as it will lay flat and not able to cut it right and that causes it to get soggy and burn.

I came here wondering what others had to say, but I guess it is too early...It wouldn't bother me, as my two dogs don't know the meaning of sleeping in, but I think if I could, that would be too early, because isn't the grass still too wet at that time?

So, I wonder if maybe this neighbor doesn't know this, or that is the only time they can cut??? lady, have you thought to ask your neighbor why they cut so early and how it isn't good for the mower to cut wet grass?

You have a point there.

Yes, I agree with you totally. On a Sunday, 8 a.m. is too early to be making the noise. That's what my neighbor has been doing too. I don't know how to stop him doing that. It is really very disturbing to the neighborhood. To me, I would say, the earliest should be 10 a.m.

I imagine they are doing it because it is still cool outside that early in the morning, but at 9 or 10 it still should be relatively cool.

This morning I wouldn't have minded anyone cutting it at 5.30 as I had to get up for work I suppose it depends on how noisy your mower is. I wonder if there are that many people having lie-ins on Sundays now as lots of workplaces are open 7 days a week... but, I probably wouldn't get my mower out before 8.30 any day.

We have people--mostly those who hire lawn services--who cut their lawns @ 8:00 am, although it's usually Saturday morning. But I do think it is too early; mostly because it wakes up my kids. They have to get up early every day to go to school or camp (next year the school bus comes at 7:10 a.m.) and we usually go to church on Sundays at 8:30, so Saturday is their only day to sleep past 8. When the neighbors mow their grass that early, it wakes them up and they can't get back to sleep. I think that during the week, 8 am would be fine, but on weekends, people should wait until 9:00 to mow the grass, trim trees, whatever.

Depends on your neighborhood I guess. Some have a contract about that sort of thing. Your neighbor may have thought is was alright because many people would have been up to get ready for church. I would just go talk to your neighbor and ask him or her to mow a little later in the day.

He is the kind of guy who doesn't care what any one thinks, he is pretty quiet and keeps to himself and is just nice enough. My husband confronted him politely about something a few years back and he was really snotty about it. So I don't think it would matter to him. Someone else nearby was doing it too, so he wasn't the only one. I guess if one person does it early other people think they can do.

I have to say that it doesn't bother me. I like to be up early and get work done so I don't think that 8 is too early. I used to work nights and when people would mow during the afternoon it would bother me. Now we live in a rural area and no one mowing their lawn bothers me.

I understand wanting to mow the lawn as early as possibl so that you do not have to be out in the heat, but 8 am is a little early. I would think most people would be sleeping in until atleast 10 am on a sunday and so I would suggest no earlier then 9:30 am as I would imagine most people are already almost awake if not already awake by 9:30 am. Have other neighbors complained about this do you know of? I think if he continues to do this then he needs to be kindly reminded that people are sleeping at this time and that the noise from the mower can disturb that.

I think that is too early, as well. Although, I have to admit, we were out working in our yard at 7:30 this morning because it gets too hot here to do it any later. We weren't mowing though. We were building our fence. I don't think it was very loud. I think you should mow the lawn after 9, like you said. It is just courteous.

8 am on Sunday is too early!!! Make a bunch of noise next Saturday night so your neighbor has to sleep in!! Hehe, just kidding... Years ago I had a neighbor who would get up at 4 AM in the winter and use his snowblower. It was SO LOUD, I wanted to kill him!!! He was also probably the least friendly person I've ever known, he was probably glad he woke everyone up!! LOL

My neighbor does the same thing to us and then gets mad when our dogs bark at him at 9am...I was like um, you cannot say anything about my dogs when your mowing your grass at 7:30am! At least I wait to let my dogs out until 9 to be respectful. I think anytime before 9am is just plain rude.

Too early would be mowing the lawn after every hour. Just kidding. 8:00 AM on the weekends is too early to mow the lawn as people are steel asleep. However, there is no law that says that you cant mow the lawn until 9:00AM. However, you can tell him nicely to mow the lawn later. If he refuses, then too bad. You will just have to bear with it.

I agree.. I think that 8:00 AM is pretty early to mow lawn on a Sunday :) Most likely due to the heat. Atleast it wasn't 6 AM. Good luck.. I hope its not on going if it's disturbing you. You may not be the only neighbor that feels this way.
