Yes, bedbugs are there. I suffered from them too when I was in my village. They take away your night's sleep by constantly biting you. They are quick to hide from humans. At about the time we go to sleep they look thin. But when we wake up in the morning they are very bulging or obese full of blood than fat. Everyday we used to spend 1 to 2 hours to kill them before going to sleep. And in public places like bus stands and cinema halls, they used to hide in the wooden chairs and used to suck blood while we were busy looking for a bus or watching the movie. Public places are source for their entry in to the homes through hiding in the corners of shirt collars or pants of people. Generally when found, bugs were crushed with toes or killed with nails. There used to be blood marks all over the walls in the homes. Bugs are not seen much these days even in villages. But can not say about public places. But they are not extinct yet, I think.

Earlier days it was there in our place. But for the last long period we cannot find even one. Studies revealed that lack of clealiness is the mainattraction of bed bugs. So keep your places clean and neat.

Yes, unfortunately there are. Five years ago in Ireland we were give an 'alert' to expect an upsergence as we stared having an influx of foreign workers, and they were bringing them over with them in their luggage (unknowingly). We have huge problems with head lice, too, and it is a nightmare for anyone with school aged children. Some years are worse than others, I guess it is like mosquito larvae, some years are more conducive to their breeding habits. Here is how Wiki describes them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedbug "Adult bedbugs are reddish brown, flattened, oval, and wingless, with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. A common misconception is that they are not visible to the naked eye, but adults grow to 4 to 5 mm (one-eighth to three-sixteenths of an inch) in length and do not move quickly enough to escape the notice of an attentive observer. Newly hatched nymphs are translucent and lighter in color and continue to become browner and molt as they reach maturity. When it comes to size, they are often compared to lentils or appleseeds." So very gross!! This is what they say about their feeding habitis: "Bedbugs are generally active only at night, with a peak attack period about an hour before dawn, though given the opportunity, they may attempt to feed at other times of day. Attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide, the bug pierces the skin of its host with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place. The bites cannot usually be felt until some minutes or hours later, as a dermatological reaction to the injected agents. Although bedbugs can live for up to 18 months without feeding, they typically seek blood every five to ten days." And this is how they say you get them, :"People can often acquire bedbugs at hotels, motels, and bed-and-breakfasts, thanks to increased domestic and international tourism, and bring them back to their homes in their luggage. They also can pick them up by inadvertently bringing infested furniture or used clothing to their household." I bet you granny never mentioned any of that!
