A Beastly Good Movie

My daughter and I watched Beastly today, the second film starring Alex Pettyfer that came out this year. (The first one being "I Am Number Four"). In case you have not heard of this film yet or seen the previews, it is a twist on the Beauty and the Beast story. This one is set in a modern day high school and the so-called "prince" is basically the leader of the brat pack who thinks that looks are all-important. Enter the "witch", played to the hilt by Mary Kate Olsen (of the Olsen twins). After his transformation, his perpetually blue-toothing father locks him into a house with a single housekeeper and a blind tutor. I usually like to look for the flaws in a film and if there was a flaw in this one it is that they didn't make him look ugly enough! My daughter was saying the tats and scars looked "cool"! I would have removed the gorgeous cheekbones and perfect teeth, at least! But if that is the only complaint I have for the film, then we are good. By far the best lines were all Neil Patrick Harris', who played the blind tutor. My daughter and I both agreed that his role was the best part of the movie and he underplayed it to perfection! While I would not buy this film, I would watch it more than once. The previews intrigued me and I was not disappointed with the film's entirety. So many times the previews end up being all that was good in the movie but this time the rest of the film lived up to them excellently. Definitely recommended to see!

I haven't seen it yet, but I loved the book. It's obviously very different, just from watching the trailers. For one, the "beast" in the book was the typical hairy chewbacca monster and not that tattooed being who doesn't really look ugly... just kinda weird. lol I still want to see the movie though. I'll probably rent it from redbox. It seems Alex Pettyfer has started a career of getting into adaptations of YA novels.

Alex may have been the star but the real fun was in the character Neil Patrick Harris played...that of his blind tutor. He has come a long way since the days of Dougie Howser.

The plot is well developed and the characters have some depth to them. The dry wit of the blind tutor is delightful...beautifully understated character. We enjoyed the movie very much.
