do you work holidays?

Depending on your job here some work holiday some don't. I luck out this year and I don't have to work the 4th of July. Yet I wouldn't mind it as it seems to be just another day most of the time really. And by that I mean we have no special plans to do anything or go anywhere special... lucky to have what we have period. Hubby gets scheduled for many holiday sometimes he works them and gets paid very well for the day. Other times he does not. I've also worked jobs where you did not work but got paid for the holiday or you did not work nor did you get holiday pay. How do holidays work out for you?

I work in the bar/entertainment industry. I work any holiday that I have a shift on or get called in for. Whether or not it's worth it depends on the holiday. New years and Halloween are great days to work. I can often make what I make in a week in one night. The down side is I also work a lot of holidays for practically nothing, something weekends as well. I remember a few years back I worked Christmas and made about half minimum wage and that's only because the bar is nice enough to give us a shift pay. Since the 4th happens to be a Monday this year I'll be off that day and working the night before will probably be pretty descent. I don't really celebrate or keep track of holidays any more. It's just another work day with no extra pay. You all should really appreciate the services provided by people who work for tips. Yeah it's a potential to make good money. But we also get no benefits or workers rights and usually work when most people are having fun.

True it's not the best industry to be in as far as pay. Trust me I don't make much more than minimum wage as a retail worker but it's the only job I can get that will keep us from paying child care til my youngest is old enough for school.

I have always worked holidays, even Christmas, when I was working. It meant time and a half and helped me keep my head above water. Now that I'm not working at a formal job, I still work on holidays for the most part. Tomorrow, the 4th, I'll be sitting here writing, taking surveys, myLotting and other activities that earn some money. Because of the economy my income has suffered and I have to work harder than ever. I hope you have a nice 4th and take that opportunity to teach your children some of the history of this great nation and why they can celebrate (or not) as they please. I had to supplement my children's education during these opportunities as the schools do not teach them much history or how special this country is.

I am hoping hubby works the holiday. He gets a paid day (though less than his normal shift) but he would normally also be entitled to overtime if he worked it plus the holiday pay. And this is his week for o/t if he doesn't work the holiday he won't get any o/t at all. And as you said we need to keep our heads above water so we can even afford luxuries like the internet and groceries.

Neither hubby nor I have jobs, so we are not working nor are we getting paid. My son lives with us, and he has both Monday and Tuesday off with pay. He works a long day, four days a week, and the company seems to try to compensate by being especially good to them.

I did not realize you were living with your son. I'm sorry you guys are still having a rough time in the job market. My hubby works a few days a week but very long hours as well and I work his days off... provided they schedule me of course.

Actually my son lives with us, and pays a minimal amount of rent. He had some legal trouble, some marriage trouble, lost a house and is in process of divorce and lives with us. I guess I work every day, I feed everyone including the cats and I do the dishes, and so on and so forth.

When I worked for various airlines we had to work the holiday if it fell on a day your regularly scheduled to work since airlines fly every day. I had to work many Thanksgiving and Christmas days. The only day that made me sad to work was Christmas day. I liked the double time pay but that day I wanted to be with family.

Yeah, it's the big ones like Christmas and Birthdays that would bother me to be working. Though I'd appreciate the pay.

Sometimes I work out on holiday if I have nothing to do and need extra cash.In holiday I get twice over time than regular day.but sometime work in holiday is very tiring and boring because I work alone and nobody's around, it may just some people. The office is very empty.

True it can be quite boring. I know it's a fact when I've worked holidays and sometimes I have to beg to get dinky projects because I'm just so bored and feel a bit useless standing there twiddling my thumbs

Fortunately most of the time I don't have to work in the holidays. Although it seems the payment will be better when you work in the holidays. However, I want to spend the time with my family. To me, family always goes first:) I regard the holidays as my family time. I love China

Family does come first! However if you are barely able to pay our bills and keep your family fed people have to do what they have to do to ensure such things.

I end up working on some holiday's, but not all of them. If a holiday falls on a Sunday chances are I will be working it. I have the 4th off this year because it is a Monday and I almost always get Monday's off. I worked on the 4th last year though.

hi 3snugglebunnies! yeah, i work holidays as well. aside from the extra pay, i really don't plan anything special during these holidays so i figure, i'd rather be at work earning than be at home with nothing much to do. i remember last christmas and new year's day, i decided to work and just take out my family on the day after. meaning, we went out on december 26 and january 2nd. just made more sense because during christmas and new year's day, it was crazy busy. anyway, for the remainder of the year, i'll try to work on holidays as well to save up. with how hard the economy has been, i'm going to need every penny.

Most of us on here are trying to save, earn, strech every penny we can get our hands on. Nothing wrong with celebrating the day after, some good deals to be had the day after!

Most of the jobs that I have had over the years required me to work on the holidays. Now I am a SAHM but I do my work online and I try to work every day. It sucks having to work on holidays, especially if the company you work for does not give holiday pay. My sister is at work right now. Poor her. I know she is going crazy. She works for a security company and the building/company that she is stationed at does not make its employees work on holidays so she is there guarding an empty building. I guess I need to get on FB and chat her up.

Even if you are not employed outside the home Shelly you know us Mom's never truly have a day off. Well holidays tend to be when bad things happen so I think it's ok that your sister had to work. Hubby's car got fished over the weekend cause the support staff like security, maintenance, office clerks ect were of due to the holiday weekend.

I am lucky know I don't have to work Memorial Day,Thanksgiving,Christmas Eve,Christmas day or New Years Day! I get paid for those days, even the ones I have off! It is a nice deal were I work when it comes to holidays!

I miss that perk from a previous job of getting paid for holidays even when you were closed it's nice. But even nicer when the holiday lands on the weekend then you get a bonus in a sense in your pay check.

I am not currently working offline, but have always had management positions and all holidays for me were off. This is the best part of all my jobs. I was a good boss though, as depending on the business I made sure all the employees were off too, and or were able to work half days.

I think if employees can't have the full day off a half day of work isn't too bad to contend with.

The holiday will be ok. I spend plenty of time with my family... too much sometimes. We need to work for our family to stay afloat as well so it's a disappointment that hubby is not working today. As I also do not have the money to go run out to get traditional foods for a day like today... so it's rather

I wish there wasn't a need for either of us to work today but there is. We need to keep the bills paid and work on upgrades to our home. We can't do that sitting on our bottoms and mylot helps a smidge but not enough to make a dent in the thing we need to afford.

My friend who is a nurse is working tomorrow and she is getting paid double. She really needs the money because she can never turn away a stray animal. So she's providing a home for a lot of animals that need care, and the bills rack up. On the last job I worked the pay went up five dollars an hour on holidays. So instead of like ten dollars an hour, on holidays it went to fifteen dollars an hour.

So you made time and a half basically. That's what hubby would be getting if he was working. I have pets and several kids to feed, so it's more of a need to work rather than being greedy.

I've only recently started working again, but yes, I work holidays if I have to. As a matter of fact, I worked this past 4th of July. Like you, my husband and I don't really celebrate these days. We do try to do things for our kids, but we tend to keep it simple. My husband's last employer always celebrated holidays, so most of the time my husband would have those days off. However, he'd still work some holidays, especially if he had work to finish from the day before. Happy mylotting!

Sadly many communities and states are facing those problems again with limiting hours and services if not fully shutting down... like the budget battle in Minnesota right now.

Well I don't have a job but when applying to places I always say I will work the Holiday. Most of the time you get paid a little extra and the shfit is usually a slow and quiet one because not many people will come in. I guess you could say I work "holidays" online because I will be online tomorrow trying to earn a few cents just like it was any other day.

Hubby's store is closed on the 4th. I swear it hadn't always been that way.. I swear I remember years where he was working and just got out early.. but it is an important holiday, so I could be wrong. My store is open on the 4th and I requested it off. I wouldn't mind working like a 9-5 on the 4th.. but we have plans to go see fireworks that night, which is something we've done every year, and I'm not going to ruin a tradition with working that night.. so I made sure to request it off.

I requested it off too as I worked it last year. Though I didn't have hubby's schedule in front of me and I have it off anyway cause this is one of his regular work days. I could do w/o the skeeters and I'd be happy to go to the fireworks.

I am self employed, and the only holiday that I will give myself off is my birthday and Christmas. I don't pay attention to any other holidays, simply because I cannot afford to. I work seven days a week as I am trying to save up a deposit for a house, and I am having a lot of fun doing so. I have a long way to go, but I know that this time next year I will have saved up enough, meaning that I will finally have a place that I can call my own home. Even though it is likely to be just a small flat, it will still be mine, and I will feel a great sense of achievement because of that.

Sounds like you have an good work ethic and a worthy goal! I have the home BUT I'd love to be able to make enough extra to help with upgrades and repairs not just groceries which is the best I can do right now.
