Why is abortion legal?

Why is abortion legal in my home country up until 24 weeks pregnancy? Abortion is illegal in some countries? Why do you think this is? I don't agree abortion should happen unless the mother's life is in danger. In my home country around 98% abortions are for social or economic reasons. Just 2% are because the mother's life is in danger or the baby is severely disabled. If abortion is legal then some people especially teenagers can think it is acceptable in society.

Because it is an industry. Some people have spent decades brain washing women into believing a baby was not real but a 'fetus' or a lump of tissue and that the most important thing to a woman was the 'freeom to have choice'. That is not freedom. It is denying what you have done, and then getting rid of the 'problem' instead of taking responsibility for your on actions. We all spend many years teaching our children that actions have consequences we have to live with, and society has given women the green light to destroy their own unborn children and naively believe it was not a real baby.

The abortion industry is in America and England. Two doctors have to agree to let a lady have an abortion in England. It is not getting a solution but depression and guilt. No amount of wishing will make a baby come back from being aborted. The clock can't be turned back.

I think that it origins from the burden of poorness and overpopulation. If you give birth to a child, but you can't afford to breed them. What happens? The worst is that he/she will starve or he/she will be uneducated person. A life of him/her will be destroy at the time he/she was born. So I think it is better for abortion than giving birth but parents are unable to breed and educate their children

Parents "breed" their children. You talk about these people as if they are dogs or horses or other animals that we "breed" for the best traits. I don't know about you, but I know I'm no horse or dog or other animal and my parents sure as hell don't "breed" me. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure my parents "raise" me.

In that case make free choice and speech illegal too. We have our rights infringed on everyday. I guess you like the government running your life ? I don't think we have too worry about the teenagers, I think we have to worry about ourselves and wonder why we find what is going on right now acceptable.

Abortion is a choice and it is a mistake. Depression can follow and the clock can't be turned back. People are encouraged to conform to society. In my home country we have elections.

Yes it is a choice but then it is up to the individual to determine of if was a mistake or not on reflection. That IS the problem, people are encouraged to conform to society, sadly most do We have elections here too on most issues, although most people vote the wrong way Giving up the the choice!

Hi! I think there are some countries where individual choice and decisions are highly valued. And, some countries don't want to let religious views influence public policy. In the United States, the majority view is that a woman shouldn't be forced to carry a baby she doesn't want to or force their religious views on someone who doesn't share their views.

If a woman does not want to carry a baby she should then make sure not to get pregnant! I could understand if that happened 40 or 50 years ago! but today there is not excuse.

How about the fact that no form of birth control is 100% effective. Women regularly get pregnant even when taking precautions. Sounds like a good excuse to me.

precisely.. I dont understand why people dont realize that its the last step that any woman wants to take.. No one does this because they love to.. No woman thinks that abortion is an alternative to contraception..

maximax8, The process may be abhorrent or equivalent to murder but I do not think it is bad to legalizing it. At least, it will curb underground abortion clinics from surfacing where such facilities are known to have many implications starting with life endangerment to the women who goes to these ill fitted facilities and not forgetting the bogus or disqualified doctors there. Abortion is still a medical procedure and I just hate to see it being performed by people who are just interested in the money. Our or rather women's body are just as equally fragile and we need to be reminded that they need to be taken care of even more where they are responsible for the major part of bring a child into this world. And when abortions are not done properly, the consequences can be very devastating. As such, legalizing abortion will prevent illegal operators and would ensure that the medical practitioners adhere to the strict protocols and standards that comes with its enforcements.

I happen to agree with you and this has nothing to do with a religious aspect or not. With regards to abortion, if you do the crime, do the time. The only one who suffers is the poor unborn child who can't voice their opinion. It's is becoming too common to see people messing around, not being careful as they know there is a way out. I still say murder is murder and this is just wrong. If you really wanted to have a kid and at the last moment something went really wrong, there are places to look to get financial help. So many people want to have children but can't and here is an example of people just "pulling the plug." I am not in a position to judge, just sharing my 2c worth.

I am also not going to judge ladies that have an abortion. I just feel so sorry for the baby each time. Every day of pregnancy is a special journey and an abortion is a sick way to die. Every baby deserves a chance and adoption is available. When a lady is told she is expecting a disabled baby the hospital speak in a negative way. With support a lady with a disabled baby can be happy. Once born there is lots of assistance is available

Abortion can happen when unwanted pregnancies and medical reasons occur. If a country allows mothers and doctors to take the baby out even if it's healthy then it is killing a new life just imagine that....that's killing a baby. That is not the ideal society. That is why it is important for the young generation to plan seriously their lives so their future babies won't be affected. Additional education regarding this topic should be mandatory. Well of course life is not perfect at all but at least we try to establish the mechanisms than not. Right now our lawmakers, civil society, and the church are in a heated debate to legalize this thing and other provisions. In my experience the guys who have nothing to do with their lives are the ones to be lectured with for if we have our jobs and focus on it I don't think you make many babies at all. I believe education is key to all of it.

Personally, I would rather see someone have an abortion than see someone drown a newborn in a toilet or dump them in a dumpster like trash immediately after they are born. How about the European women that made the headlines last year; who had babies, killed them and then sealed the bodies in trash bags and in luggage in their attics? Or the thousands of children who are tortured from the day they are born and finally die from abuse and neglect every year? Which is REALLY worse? And, how many more cases would there be if abortion was banned? Please be honest with yourself about this. Child abuse, child neglect, and child homicide are serious problems in the world today. Is it really worse to kill an unwanted fetus than it is to let the child be born and then suffer these things?

"The answer is adoption and it can be international." Only in a perfect world and this world is far from perfect. Right now the world does not need more people; there are already too many people here now. There are already places where the population has strained resources to the breaking point and with the climate changes that are already taking place it will become more and more difficult to support the people we have right now, without adding more and more babies. Also, in most places, giving a child up for adoption is a very negative thing and can have severe repercussions for the person giving the child up. Very few women are willing to admit that they would not be "good mothers" because of the social stigma and pressure from friends and family. In some places you are not permitted to give your children up. Even in the US there have been cases where a parent tried to give up their children; but, they were forced to keep them instead. And this doesn't include the cases where children have been removed from abusive homes only to be given back to their abusers a few months later. For pregnant women it becomes even more complicated is the father is in any way involved. Maybe they would be a good mother; but, the father is the one who is abusive. (Getting out of an abusive relationship is not as easy as many people think and what if the abusive father gained even partial custody!) Throughout the centuries - even in very restrictive societies - women have sought to terminate unwanted pregnancies by any means possible. Legal or illegal; safe or dangerous. Making abortion illegal will not stop abortion. So, in my opinion, it is better to make abortion a legal option (with certain restrictions) than have women return to unsafe, unsanitary, illegal abortions.

The answer is adoption and it can be international. When a lady is pregnant she is carrying a baby for the world and he or she might be a very special person. Aborted babies are the missing people of the world.

FROM THE DESK OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER Your government has heard your concerns & we are now making abortion illegal. However as there is no money for the government to support these unwanted children , the parents clearly can't & you are the only one who does seem to want these children the responsibility falls to you. We'll be sending the first 100 orphans into your care in the morning with more to follow as they are born. Just pointing out the fact that your not thinking about what happens if they DON'T get aborted. Sometimes it's just the lesser of two evils.

Now if they hadn't drank & had the money for the medical expenses do you suppose they'd be needing the abortion in the first place? Please chose from one of our 210 million orphans worldwide (recent UNICEF report ) who were from less than proper beginnings instead.

hi maximax8, hello there! how are you, it's been a long time since i logged in here. hope everything is great with you. well, enough of the chitchat and back to your discussion...hehe.. abortion is not legal in my home country and i am thankful for that. however, this does not mean that there are no abortions going on in the backdoor. i just hope that women would realize that abortion is very dangerous to their health and would pose a great risk in their lives. take care... faith210

Abortion is legal in Malaysia at 18 years old. But throwing babies into the toilet that's another case dealing with young teenagers under 18. They will be caught for this and put under probation period. Some in prison. I think one should not abort the baby if she really responsible for what she had done. Anyway, if she is not financially stable to feed even herself then abortion is the best choice.

In my home country abortion is allowed for a pregnant lady that is up to 24 weeks pregnant. We have the National Health Scheme which provides free abortions and ladies have free care at the birth if the baby is allowed to be born. The poor in my home country can get benefit from the government. It is a shame that poverty happens to some pregnant ladies.

I perfectly understand what you are talking about. We have the same problem in bulgaria. We stil have many orphan children who will never know what the word mother truly means. I realy don't like abortion, but sometimes it is the better choice. We even have cases of mother killing her own new born baby because she didn't have money for abortion and she doesn't want it,

I personally think that abortion should be legal but in some exceptional cases, like when you're raped or in cases where your life is in danger, like you said.Im not agreee with abortion in general, and i'll never be agree with letting irresponsable teenagers abort babies because they forgot to use protection or just using abortion in other cases that are not like "exceptional". By the way, Im Chilean, and in Chile abortion is illegal.

If a lady is attacked in my home country she could take the morning after pill the next day. Then she would be able to have a high degree of chance she didn't get pregnant from that terrible experience. Teenagers need to learn about the importance of using birth control. They also should find out that it is not 100% effective. I wonder what happens if there is an exceptional case in Chile then does the lady cross an international border? I know abortion is illegal in Ireland so some ladies come over to clinics in England.

In my country, abortion is illegal. It's only legal when the woman had been raped. I have to say that I don't agree with this, for me, it should be legal. I mean, where I live, we have a high rates of desnutrition and poverty. Many womens don't know the basic about contraceptive methods, because they didn't had education. A lot of them don't want to have kid and when they born, they leave the child on a trash can or on the river. Also, may womens die on the illegal clinics, because when a woman wants to abort, nothing is going to stop her.

It is shocking what Dr Kermit Gosnell and his employees did in the clinic. I read a book written by a lady that was born in an abortion clinic when the lady was 7 months pregnant. Luckily the nurse sent her to hospital and they gave her medical help. No form of birth control is 100% effective.

If the women were educated about all forms of contraceptive methods, they could use them properly. But, many of women take the birth control pill only when they remember and there are girls that use everyday, but sometimes they take in differents times, so, it's not going to be 100% effective too. For me, education is the best way to handle with this matter, but, of course, I think that we never going to achieve this, at least in my country. If the government don't give education to the low-income women, the least thing that they could offer would be a financial support to the mother or safe clinics to the women that decides that she can't affort the minimum conditions necessary to a children.

Because beforehand, it was hideously dangerous for women to have unplanned pregnancies and abortions. I'm not saying that I am pro-abortion but each woman should be told that she has choices in the matter; that she can let the baby go for adoption if she so chooses and make necessary arrangements. However at the same time, she ought to know of the consequences, that she should learn to say no until she is ready. Sometimes mistakes are made but we should all know that we do have a choice and there is help.

One of my friends is a foster carer and some of the children she cares for are then adopted. She once had a little baby from a teenager and it was so lovely that teen let her baby girl be born. The little baby ended up with a loving and caring couple.

It should be legal because if a woman wants one she will have one no matter what. Whether it's in a doctors office or a dirty back ally won't matter. abortion is nothing new. It's been going one since time began. People are just more open about it these days.

Abortion is not legal in our country. But for me, even if it is, it is still not advised because it may harm the mother. It is also dangerous to do such thing because it involves killing. Although that baby was not born yet but he/she has life already.

Such is the way of the world anymore. I'm against abortion yet I'm expected to accept it freely, as a right and freedom yet, to keep irresponsible people from subjegation for that irresponsibilty. Hi Maximax! No matter if a country allowed its citizen to do abortion for me it is still illegal. No one should allowed the abortion except if it could danger the mom's life. Other reasons of abortion like social, economy are nonsense and ridiculous. Especially if it is about the social. They did it so they should responsible and let the babies alive not to kill them. I am totally against it!
