Little Known Facts - Do You Know Any?

United States

Hi fellow myLotters, I love, love, love learning new facts that I never new about before. What about you? I learned a cool fact today. I learned that George Washington actually wasn't the very first president of the United States. There were actually about 14 before him. George Washington was just the first president under the U.S. Constitution. Before that, there were about 14 or so presidents of the Continental Congress... which were considered presidents of the United States. What are some cool, little known facts that you've learned?

I suspect this is not a little known fact, but did you know this discussion is probably going to get deleted? But just to keep the fun going for a while......Do you know that the ancient Egyptians used crocodile dung in a pessary as a contraceptive? I don't know about the rest of the guys, but if I knew there was a croc nearby, that would be have killed my ardour before the pessary was necessary! :o

Why would it be deleted? Is this considered a poll type discussion?

Hi Angelee, I learned today that although our BP gives us continual coupons for free beverage and treats and they expire, if you go into the BP and select your free beverage, and although the coupon is expired they will honor it anyways. lol This was such a delight, because I get so many of the free coupon tickets and was throwing them away for over a year, as I never did make it during the listed time period. Today, my boyfriend pulled out a couple and I said they are expired, he said HA! No such thing when you are a loyal customer. Therefore, both of us walked out with huge milkshakes. MMMMM!

Hmm... interesting! I suppose if I don't want to get in the habit of something, I should stop doing it before I get to 20 days. LOL

One I learned a long time ago but which has been very useful is this: when hot oil and water are mixed, they 'spit' - like when you put frozen food into a hot frying pan. But if you add one to the other, because they don't mix properly, the last one added will be the one that is spat out. In other words, if you add water to a hot frying pan, it'll spit water rather than oil, which is a lot safer than adding oil to hot water. That's why I always make sure a pan is hot AND dry before I add the oil.

Came from a chemistry teacher (when he came back to work after he'd burned his hands with sulphuric acid because he added it second, the silly man - apparently that works the same way).

I'm not suggesting you add oil and water. I'm just saying that you should be careful when mixing them (if you need to). As long as the pan's dry, add the oil. The problem occurs when there's water in the pan and you add oil on top - it will spit oil. If there's hot oil in the pan already, adding water (or something frozen, for example) will make it spit water (since the water was added second). Basically, don't add oil to a hot pan that already has water in it.

I love facts especially if they are surprising ones. One thing that amazed me was that it is always the male seahorses that get pregnant. Another one is that chimpanzees can remember only 1000 human made alphabets or words. So they are not as smart as we think they are. Also I learned that 97 percent of DNA of chimpanzees match with ours. That is why, they are closest to us. I also came to know that Benjamin Franklin was a member of Hell Fire club in Britain. I really got very surprised by this, for this specific club consisted of really forbidden activities. Another thing is that every year in Bohemian grove which is in California a huge number of political men meet for partying and camping. Every nasty thing happens there. But at the same time, many important decisions about the world are also taken right there. The pictures are all over the Internet.

The male seahorses don't get pregnant, they just carry the fertilised eggs around in a pouch until the little baby seahorses hatch.

Hi mylotters. I love to learn cool new facts everyday. And it has become my hobby to browse, find and share one fact daily :) What I have found today is (I think you people may already know this. Forgive me if so) - A Rabbit's eyes is placed not directly in the front of its head, but to the sides. This enables a Rabbit, a near 360 degrees of vision. So the rabbit can look behind it without even breaking sweat to turn its head :O But as with all, the disadvantage of such strange placement of eyes is that, though is vision perspective is wide, but still a Rabbit can not look directly in front of it, nor directly backwards, straight above or below it. Have a nice day :)
