Another cheating

Friends, my granddaughter Subhee is going school, my son bought books for her; today I went to a shop to buy brown paper to put cover on the books, I bought one packet of fool’s cap size white paper.
This packet is supposed to have 500 sheets as printed on the label, but I found there 480 sheets only; I rushed back, I was told, one ream of paper has 20 quires , each quire has 24 sheets, so we have repacked as 480 sheets. Well friends I know what ‘ream’ and ‘quire’ means, but many don’t know.
He however gave me the 20 sheets, he had removed; this is another form of cheating.
I also saw packets where they have cut the ‘fools cap’ size paper to half and selling at high prices.
Well I have the true size papers with me, I will make note books, and put brown cover on the books, as grandfather I would love doing it.
Do you put covers on books; make notebooks for kids, grandkids or your use?
Do you buy papers; are they of right size and quantity?
Also please comment on this story. Thanks in advance.
Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .
Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

A rim has 20 quires, each quire has 24 sheets ok
A packet of paper whether A4 or A6, or Fool's cap has 500 sheets, i know that
You say, every rim has 24 sheets, in my opinion this is WRONG
thanks for response

Here with have the Trades Description Act and Weights and Measures, it would be an offence to do as your vendor did punishable by law.

Hello Sir,
That may be the reason; my elder son’s school is asking to cover the books by old news papers. I think it is quite comfortable as we are getting newspaper every day. They are even instructing that don’t use name slips to write the name instead tell the children to write their name on the book in a white paper or on the cover itself.
The business people in your area are really crooks and they know how to run their business profitably. Many won’t check the same like you did and they can make money by this way.

A pretty scene came in front of my eyes where the grandfather would be busy with the work and the grandchild ordering him about. Nice relationship there. Many homes do not have this fortune as with the nucleus family system and most having left the shores this is a rare thing these days. I am happy for you and your grand child. And as for cheating looking at the 2G scam have a heart and ignore this small act of robberyincident!

Hi Professor,
I'm sure not many checked it like you do and they would have ripped a lot of customers off. That is dishonesty indeed. I used to protect my books very well by using plastic covers, they are very durable. Sometimes I use white paper and design my own cover. Flyers can be used too if they are very colourful and make the book cover interesting.

I notice cheating in each and every transaction now-a-days. The number will be less or bad quality added with good ones. Sometime back the price of garlic was exorbitant like Rs.240/- per kg. I went to some place and got it for Rs.200. I thought it is a good bargain and bought 1 kg. When I came home, I found white onions and spoilt garlics in the packet. Who will go all the way back again? So I kept quiet. That is why people say buyer beware.

hello dear professor, it is really good that you caught them right. these people do a lot of such cheating and you know if we buy something like this from a mall of something, they never replace. because things once bought, and opened are never taken back. something like this happened with me also. me and my hubby bought a full roll of brown sheet to cover our baby's books and notebooks. same thing happened. but we never rushed back. we did not bought from the mart or mall . we bought from a local bookstore where it was very much possible also if we have tried to return but we did not. you did a nice thing to return and gave them a lesson. keep it up.

It is good that you are a very careful person when come to purchasing stationery items for use in school. I ever came across where the shopkeeper had over charged me nearly the double price of original price when i purchase a book cover wrapper. Luckily, i discovered it and ask the cashier. He realized his mistake and return the extra balance of money to me. Sometimes, it really pays to be very careful when we want to buy anything from the shopkeeper. When i was young before, my mother used to wrap my book covers with brown papers, too. By nowadays, the transparent plastic wrapper is more popular and even my son's school request us to use it to cover the book covers. Seems like, the brown paper wrapper is not so popular in my area anymore.

Here too the plastic sheets of brown color is used, it is semi transparent, some schools ask you to buy the books, covers, dress, tie even shoes from the school, may look bad, but many parents buy..

That is very bad. That's cheating consumers of their precious money. If only all consumers were like you, then probably this form of cheating will be minimized. Where do consumers go to report when they found out that they'd been cheated?

You are really great, you are taking so much care about your granddaughter. She is really lucky.
My neighbor's children are 3rd and 4Th class students, they don't know how to do this, so i can help to them. They also can talk very friendly with me.
Coming to me, i am a b.tech fourth year student, total works will be in laptop only, no need notebooks(rarely use).

Wow Papa,
Very observant. I have purchased book covers but I have not seen them in large quantities. The ones I have seen are like 3 in a package, so I am sure I was not cheated at the time. How sad that manufacturers and merchants go all out of their way to cheat consumers. As consumers we do have to wise as you and assure we are not cheated. Simply because if they can get away with cheating us on quantities they will make sure to cheat in other areas too.
I have not made notebooks before, as I am not crafty like this and our schools here are very particular on the types of writing paper allowed.
Congrats to Subhee going to school.

" with knowledge comes power" so glad prof that you are knowledgeable, and there are very few people who are like you or would even bother to protest, what about the rest of the ordinary consumers?

hi professor,
i guess the best place to complain is the department of trade and industry. am sure there is an office like that in india (the name might differ) but functions the same. they check on complaints by customers with regards to cheating and others. a friend of mine had a problem before when she purchased a laptop. there was a defect hence she returned the same and was promised to be sent a replacement. it was taking so long (a month already) and she has not received the replacement. when she complained in the DTI, it took 3 days, and then the replacement was sent to her.
i could see how subhee is enjoying the new covers of her books and notebooks.
have a great day.

Hi prof!
Yes, we always put covers on books to protect them from any damages. With covers, they will looks like a new books for many years. And there is notebooks for my nieces , nephews and me too. Whenever I buy books , papers and stationery I will always make sure it has right size, weight and quantity. So I never experienced situations like you as the seller honest in selling things to us. Too bad they get caught by you. It is not good to cheat people. The only thing they know is profits.

hi baba
this is my first post
i thk chtg can be commonly seen on the indian streets nw..... especially with retailers and whole sellers....ther main motto is to cheat the innocent customers ... they really dont care abt atithi devo bhava..
my massi bought these shawls from jammu .. for ard 10k . she was told it is pure pashmina . but wen she she came back to the capital sm aunty who is an expert in all these salwar suits and all... proved it as fake only by lukg at it .....
so we cant change the sellers we can only change ourselves ... so be aware and be well informed of the items u r buying ...
take care
keep lottg ...
