Canadian Geese and Sea Gulls - This picture was taken at Fairhope Alabama. It amazed me that you would see Canadian Geese and Sea Gulls together!

My husband and I went on a little trip to historic Fairhop, Alabama. While along the waters edge we had taken a walk. On the beach I saw all kinds of Canadian Geese just sitting and staying there. I asked the locals and they said yes they never go away. We live on Panama City Beach in Florida and never see any Canadian Geese here. So I thought it would be fun to feed them. Well when I started throwing them bread here come the sea gulls. I found it very interesting as Canadian Geese are sometimes very aggressive to get their food but Sea Gulls win out over the Geese. It really shocked me to see the Geese back away for the sea gulls. So I had a great deal of time taken to feed them. Here is a picture that I got to take of them together. I had honestly never seen these two bird types together before.

It always amazes me how incredibly aggressive and territorial seagulls are! I'm not surprised that they were even able to take on the geese - if I was another bird I would back off from seagulls too!

LOl they did. I never thought Canadian Geese would back down from anything and they gave way to the seagulls. Amazed me. so I actually learned something out on my walk to feed them.

Dear marie ~ Please allow me to bring you up to speed on the Wild Geese in your Post. Respectfully I offer this advise~ The wild geese in your Post are "Canada Geese!" (They are not called 'Canadian!' There are as many (or perhaps more) Canada Geese hatched in the United States as there are in Canada. Canada Geese are equally Canadian, and American. There is only one kind of Canada Goose. Some other wild geese in North America are Snow Geese, and Graylag Geese.

Well no offense as when we see this type of duck its always been called Canadian here. That shows you what us dumb American knows LOL Of course there are always different types within any Goose. I notice different marks on sea gulls all the time. But when I used to live in Missouri the geese looked exactly like these and our teachers always said they were Canadian geese. So its just how we are taught. Now you are gonna having me researching and learning more on these birds. I just put the discussion up cause it was my first time to see them ever together. I had figured the Geese would have run them off LOL Have a great day

I know in Alaska, I would often see the sea gulls on the breakwater of the boat harbor that was across the street from the high school in Juneau, and I would see geese flying overhead, but I never saw them on the ground together. Since the geese would be on their migration in either spring or fall, they wouldn't stop in our town. Thanks for sharing this picture. Have a great weekend!!!

I have never seen Canadian geese (I am an American also). I read some of the other posts, and if some are from America I wonder why they are called Canada geese. Why is Fairhop Alabama historic? Was part of the Civil War fought there?

There is an expression "pecking order" that denotes who comes first when something is handed out...like an entitlement procedure. I believe this comes from the habits of birds. I was having a picnic by a lake one day with my ex and some butcher birds came to our table to eat. There were magpies in the trees nearby and crows too and I think another kind of bird as well. We were throwing bread at the birds in the trees and they were taking it in turns to grab it with the crows missing out because they were hanging right back. I found this quite interesting and now here you are saying that the geese backed off to let the gulls go first. Hmm. Curious.
