Is it really possible for a small time blog to make $500 a month?

So I was chatting with a cousin of mine. Her branch of the family has always had rotten luck and is going through some stretched times. She recently married young and she and her husband needed more income. She started a diary style blog. Now she is telling me that this blog pulls in $500 a month for her. Is this really possible? I heard that at best small blogs could make maybe a $100 for month, but $500 a month? Really?

Personally, I haven't actually experienced getting paid through blogs. But I have friends who are bloggers and some of them earn $2 per blog entry, and some of them earn even more. $500 a month? Is it through online or are they hired under a company and they go to the office to blog?

I am assuming online. My cousin hasn't been to college and I don't see her holding down an office position. But this is were the weird part begins: she won't give me any of the details. She keeps using this "I don't want more competition in my niche" and "I don't want the secret to get out" rubbish whenever I pressure her. I don't know if she is telling the truth or not. It just sounds a bit to good to be true to me.

That definitely sounds as if she is being "economical with the truth"! Anyone who is REALLY making what they say they are won't be ashamed to let you see the blog, at least! After all, they are supposed to be making money by letting LOTS of people see it, so why be so cagey about 'competition' and 'the big secret'??? I think she is probably lying in order to try and impress!

@owlwings. I thought so. I guess I had a moment where I wished my cousin had found some golden egg. When she refused to give me the URL I was pretty much certain, but you still can't kill that last spark of hope for awhile, ya know?

Possible? Yes. I mean it is not impossible. Even if you are only blogging in blogspot.com if you can get the attention of an online spender and be convincing enough that you are able to sell products to your traffic no matter how small, it is possible. Imagine if I am convincing enough to sell USD20,000 worth of products from amazon every month, and I'm selling it to only 4 persons buying USD5,000 each per month, at the 5% commission, that hits USD500 a month. Possible. BUT I would say its improbable. It is more likely to happen in a scam site or an adult related site. But who knows, maybe your cousin is just really good at what she does right? Then again, maybe not.

It is highly improbable I agree, but with a little... well actually even with all the luck in the world, it is not impossible. Maybe the niche is just really there. I don't know, benefit of the doubt maybe?

That is a pretty up there scenario, and one I don't see her meeting (sorry cousin dear). But then again maybe she has a hidden talent I am not aware of. :)

Yes, its possible for a person to make a part-time or full-time income from a simple small time blog. This method doesn't work for everyone, and it takes a lot of time, effort and detication in order to get fallowers/keep fallowers. You have to post topics of interest, and not use it to complain about what's going wrong with your life all of the time. I'm not saying there is something wrong with that, but that doesn't usually make money. The local news did an article a few days back about people who use blogs to make money. However, it can take years to start generating that kind of money a month. It's not an easy or realistic goal. People who earn off of it, allow adds, post daily, and always have something to keep interested. Diary-style blogs rarely work out. Those who do have an equal balance of pros and cons and sometimes offer product reviews without actually trying. Being unique is key.

From what you are saying, the diary style doesn't seem to have what it takes. Unless one is famous (which my cousin is not) I don't see why people would want to know about one's life. It isn't very unique at all.

I think she has lied you. It is an absurd amount for a new blogger to earn. If she really manages to earn such an amount, ask her to share it with us or at least with you.

I've been trying, but she is stiff lipped. I don't new how new her maybe blog is - she only mentioned yesterday, so I assume it is new.

If it is new, then the amount mentioned by her is nothing but an imaginary figure. It may be that it is her expectation to earn from that blog.

M not surprise she can make that much, cause some bloggers on my side have even reach more than that. They dont just use the blog promoted in one site but they go to forum start group etc etc. Normally they have products that they sell and write it in a diary style with promotional advert that they put the links in their blog. True or not she making that much i applaud for her initiative.

I suppose it is possible with affiliate marketing and the right promotion...

Well the answer can be some times no and sometimes yes.She can earn that much money if she is selling products on her blogs. And if she is writing on highly searched and viewed matter then she can make that much money. But here she is saying she is writing dairy like blog. Then can be some times true. But it means that she is writing very emotional matters and thus attracting women readers and elderly people to her blog. This also proved by the fact that she is not giving you link. This means that she done it and had posted many family and emotionally related topics which she donot want her family to see.

Well that is an interesting explanation. It just might be - her side of the family as I said before is a bit, well you know. I doubt she would want to spread a full report to every other branch of the family.

I would think that it would be hard to earn that kind of money on a small diary style blog. I hear of people earning from their blogs but I sure have not been earning with mine so I don't know how anyone could earn that much. Hopefully, she will share something with you.

Maybe possible but your site should really be having a good page rank and a very good traffic in which you have thousands of people visiting your site per day. But you said its a journal type or diary, well that seems to be something unless your cousin is a celebrity that people would want to know what is happening in her life.

Well, in my humble and somewhat blunt opinion, she is a sweet girl but she has about as much flavor as wheat stock. So I suppose her story has an 90% chance of being fake at this point. Sigh. You kind of hope ya know, that someone in the family really has found a money secret.

Really?? Well, that is kinda hard to believe especially if her blog is just diary style, but it is possible. Can you send me the link to her blog?

I would love to - if she would give me the link. She is being really secretive about it and using excuses whenever I pressure her. Just this morning on the phone I wanted to know what strategies she used to promote her blog to that level, but she wouldn't tell me. I suspect she was lying from the start, so I asked this question to see if it was even possible. From what I have been reading it does indeed sound like she is lying. I have a feeling she is really getting some help from our grandmother, but just didn't want to admit it, and thus fabricated this blog thing to explain the rest of the family. Still, I was kind of hoping it was possible. :(

Frankly,i take your sister's words with a grain of salt .Nowadays ,earning online is not as easy as in 2000 ,when the whole Internet was blooming .Without tip technology or creative idea ,to my mind ,to make $500 a month is not more than a tale or myth .Face the reality ,pal .

These days the internet is also more crowded - by the billions. I agree with you. I think she is spinning a fancy fairy tale.

hello there awinds, who knows if they are really making that much? we can never tell unless they show us a proof of that $500 income, right? how long have they been doing this? because if blog making will earn you that much everyone will most probably be doing the same stint, right? but, personally, i believe it is possible depending on the traffic that blog is acquiring. you can probably get their blog name and run a search onto www.alexa.com and see if its a good blog worthy of $500.00 a month. and then update us on what you find out :)

I'll be sure to do that! I can be very persistent when on a quest. I warn you though, don't get your hopes up. At this point I am leaning towards the "she is lying" side.
