What I enjoy during brownouts usually

Brownout means no electrical power in home; streets in my area, let me tell you I don’t have battery backup for the lights and fans, just one 10watt CFL lamp glows in each room from an inverter. Without the air-conditioner running, I feel too hot, might be due to my diabetes neuropathy; so I go to the rooftop, enjoy the cool air, but I have a bad (or good?) habit; I start gossiping with friends, students , teachers using my cell phones, they are inland as well as international calls. I enjoy talking to them; feel as if I am sitting front to front. Some of my friends have 3G enabled dual camera cell phones, so I can see the face. What you do during brownouts usually? Do you have battery backup systems to run appliances in home during power failures? Please comment on this story and share your opinion. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Hello Papa, Seems you take a small inconvenience and turn it into a grand of a time. lol I have not experienced a "brownout", or as we call it a black out in a long time. The last time we did it was during the evening and my boyfriend and I lit candles in the apartment and spent some time chatting away. We do not have nearby family so we did not go over to visit and it was later in the day. I did send a few texts messages and spoke to a few people on the phone. We did not get the electricity back until the next day. So we kept wetting towels with cold water to try and cool off. We can't go to our roof top as our is not accessible. We then went to bed to sleep and woke up with the electricity powered on. We were very happy to get it back, as most of the items in the freezer were thawing.

Oh I see the difference now. I don't think we have ever had a "brown out", or at least I can't remember. I do recall several Blackouts as a kid, but during my adult years very few of them. I have heard certain parts of IL having Blackouts especially the South Side of Chicago, where it was devastating. Thankfully I have not personally experienced many.

Here we like to referr to brownouts as blackouts. Were I live if the power goes out it usually isn't for along time. Usaully it is for a few minutes and has been not more then a few hours at the longest. It usually has to do with a thunderstorm and lighting. If power goes out I have a flashlight to use and candles. Luckily the power doesn't go out much in the summer when it is hot! That would suck!

Hi Prof! When there is black out, my family will only use candles and torchlight to see things and use the newspaper as the fan.(^^)It it takes longer time to fix the electric cabel then just have some sleep. Most of the time we will have blackout at night so next morning we will get the power supply back.(^^)

We do not have brownouts in my state but several of the larger states here in the US have them. I live in the south east and it is very hot and humid, when we have bad weather causing our electricity to go out during the summer months it is almost unbearable. We open windows, find shady spots around the home and use rechargable fans when we are lucky enough to have them. Often with our hurricane season we have power outages caused by storm destruction and those sometimes leave us without power for days.

That's funny, professor. It sounds like you really enjoy brownouts For me, I cannot see anything positive during brownouts We do not have a generator or backup battery. We need to keep the aircon running because we have a baby. Opening the windows does not help because no cool air comes in anyway. We cannot stay outside too because of the mosquitoes. In short, the baby and I becomes irritated during brownouts. We have them every now and then and it usually lasts for an hour or so.

hello dada, We seldom experience having brownout here in our area. But if it happens, then we got to do is go to place where there is power. Me and my kids stroll around the city or nearby city like going to bhaby's place, thu she lives to another city, but it's just a 10 minutes drive away from my home (hehehe) So,you really like talking,I guess when you visit us here,we will be staying the whole night talking and talking and we all end up having eyebags

For some reason, I tend to read a lot during brown outs. I light up 2 or 3 candles and I read until about 2 or 3 in the morning. I hardly ever read when the electricity is up and running and I guess this is because I'm either online or watching tv. I'm not the only one I know who is like this during brown outs. A lot of my friends are exactly the same and I couldn't have said it better then they have: "There is something romantic in reading by candle light." We don't mean romantic in the sense that there is romance involved. We mean that there is something sentimental and idealistic. It's kinda bad too though because we tend to take reading for granted with all the technology available to us. Yet aside from the fact that my friends and I are exactly the same, I also love it that there is nothing that can stop us from having fun and a little entertainment.

Hello! Lately we don't have any power interruptions. But during at the past when I was younger, perhaps I was still in high school, I enjoyed these too! The moments that we share with my family talking is a nice experience. Sometimes me and a couple of my siblings, we are 5 exclusive of our parents, enjoyed doing shadow making through our hands.

Wow Prof, there's still a lot of things you can do when there is brownout in your place! Good for you. We also experience power interruptions here in my place, and i don't have power generator at home because gasoline is expensive. If the brownout happens during day time, I will do some watering of the plants, or maybe clean the bathroom, that way i will keep myself wet by the water and will keep myself cooler. I also want to install my hammock in the yard to feel the fresh air. If it happens at night, I will leave the house and stay at the boulevard (near my place)to take a walk or just sit there watch moonlight with a bucket of popcorn with my dog...

My power goes out maybe once or twice a year because of storms. I usually sit outside if it's cool enough--storms usually happen in the summer--or inside reading if it's hot. I have rechargeable fans, 3 of them, to keep me cool and I keep them charged up always. I hate being hot and sweaty and will do anything to avoid it! Why do you have brown outs? Is it because of excessive power demands? You should get some rechargeable fans if you can, they don't cost much and you can order them online, I think. I got mine at Walmart.
