Visiting cities in the world

Most people live close to a city which is worth visiting and it might have educational museums in it. It might have grand looking buildings. Possibly it will have some parks and gardens. I live in Europe and used to live close to London. These days I live closer to Cardiff. My favorite cities which I have visited are Sydney, Cape Town, Vancouver and Cartagena De Indias. Which cities in the world have you been to already? Are there any cities that you would love to visit in the future? If so which ones?

Hi maximax8! One city I'd love to visit is Barcelona, simply due to the fact I had two opportunities to go and my friend couldn't be bothered, therefore it's at the top of my list. I'm dying to see that awesome cathedral as well as I don't think it's finished yet! In England I adore London as there is so much to do and see. However, it's not as warm as people may think. I've been caught out a couple of times when it's been cold there! I've tended to visit for a Carlisle away footy match but me and John went without the football one time and it was lovely. I've been to Edinburgh but if I go again it will be over a few days rather than a flying visit on the train. I like York as the shopping experience is unique. The Shambles is awesome! I went to the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff a couple of times and I loved it..miles better than Wembley in my opinion and I love its location. Apparently, it's on the site of the old Cardiff Arms Park but facing another direction..or something. Love the roof on it too. I would've liked to have seen more of Cardiff at the time but the football makes it impossible to do so. I think we stayed in Gloucester for the Carlisle game. I've also been to Madrid and Dublin although I found the Madridonians(?) a tad unfriendly and they still have bullfighting there, unlike Barcelona, that is in the process of banning it, fortunately. If I really think long enough I reckon Las Vegas is my favourite city as it has so much going on...plus the fact I got engaged one year and married another, so it's a special place. Unfortunately, funds won't allow us to go back there for some time but the next time we DO go I'd like to go on one of those multi-centre holidays, so I can see a bit more of America (the greener bits)...and Canada too if possible!

Hi Janey, I hope that you will be able visit Barcelona one day soon. It is meant to be just a beautiful city indeed. I am delighted to hear they are going to ban bull fighting there. As a vegan it is a sport I think very cruel. I think Las Vegas must be a very exciting city. I hope that you will one day go on another trip to America when you can afford it. I visited Edinburgh one Easter and it was very cold. I live fairly near Cardiff and go there quite often. I know what you mean about York being a special place to visit. Some city folk can be busy and seem a bit unfriendly. I think it would be lovely to see some of Carlisle. Good luck with those footie games.

Aww thanks maximax8. I think you'd like Carlisle, it's very laid back (some would say TOO laid back) but it's certainly not overcrowded like some cities and it has its fair share of history, being on the border with Scotland of course. The Lake District is a short drive away. I used to commute here from Blackpool on the train and some of the views were stunning and it was different every time! The people are very friendly too..very warm so if you did come to Carlisle you'd certainly have a good time.

Dear Maxine, For me it is difficult to say which is my favorite city or even whether I prefer a stay at a beach or a tour around a great capital. It all depends on how I feel. Cities will be out of bounds for me for some time because I have been discovered to have cancer and I´m on chemo. Probably, with luck, doctors will let me go for a day or two nearby, depending on plaquetes count and all that. I can still visit with my computer though and plan on future trips. Thinking it over now, I would love to visit again the awesome cities in the south of Spain. Arab culture left an incredible amount of beauty that western people, for some reason, were incapable of learning. Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada are worth seeing. And if you rent a car, you can also see all the small white towns. I do hope though that I´ll be able to make a pilgrimage to Macchu Pichu some day.

Dear Marguicha, I love to hear about all your fantastic travels. Yes, Spain has some splendid looking cities. I am keen to visit Seville and Grandada. As you know I loved visiting Cartagena De Indias and adore places with sense of history. I hope that you will be able to visit magical looking Machu Picchu. I am glad that you are working on your computer and planning future visits. I am so sorry that you are experiencing chemo and hope that it doesn't give you bad side affects. You are an excellent traveler and I send you a big hug.

I was in Cartagena too, once, beautiful city indeed, specially the historic part, is similar to Antigua, in Guatemala, but larger, the spanish part I mean. More often, I prefer to go to nature, rather than cities, myself.

I have visited many of the big cities in Europe, but there are still some cities that I would like to visit for instanse Madrid, Barcelona, Vienna and Athens. I have visited some places in Greece, Spain and Austria in the past, but I would like to return one day and visit the capitals as well. My favourite European city is Bratislava in Slovakia. I went there last year, and I thought that it was a very beautiful and charming city. I also liked Vilnius and Riga a lot. In the future I hope to visit some of the big cities in Asia, I think that could be really interesting. It is very hard to decide which cities I would like to visit, because there are so many places that sound interesting. I would love to travel around in Asia for several months and visit a lot of different places in China, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

I hope that you will be able to travel around Asia on a trip that lasts a number of months. That sort of way of traveling is a way to get excellent value. You could visit Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. I enjoyed visiting smaller places in Sumatra. I visited Bratislava and found it cheaper that Vienna which is it very close to. I loved it in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. I went there when my disabled son was just over one year old. We got a flight to Latvia found our local airport.

I visited beautiful Bulgaria five years ago. I liked visiting Plovdiv and found its old part of town charming. I also went to the old capital of Bulgaria where I saw a sound and light concert.

I live in a large city and with Dallas 3 and a half hours, Houston 3 and San Antonio 1 hour away, I have lots of large cities around me. I would love to visit large cities I've never been to, like Chicago, New York (well, okay, I've been there, but not really to see the sights, just to visit family) and L.A. I have been to San Francisco, but it was in 1973, and I'd like to go back. I've been to London 3 times, twice since the mid-1990's. I would actually like to go back to Rome, that that I'm old enough to not be that interesting to "romeos"

maximax8, Having been around Europe in the course of my work I must admit that I love most of them starting with Paris, Rome, Black Forest and not forgetting London. I really find Europe fascinating with its history, architecture and most of all the people. It is also very romantic like a drive in the Black Forest, where you will get to see all castles, vintage houses, the breathtaking sceneries of nature. I like the idea where old buildings are being preserved and a great fair share of nature around. Even the playing golf in Europe is more natural than in the US, where the courses are more closer to nature than some artificial architecture.

I went to a village yesterday, Fiskars in Finland. Not sure if that counts as a city really :-) In Finland I've been to Helsinki, Tampere, Kuopio, Leppävirta (also not really a city, but a bit big for a village) and Kuusamo. And possibly some others that I have forgotten. I've been to 3 of the 5 biggest cities in Norway, I really do have to travel a bit more in my own country. I've been quite a few in the UK, including London of course, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayr, Nottingham, Bath and Hastings. In the US, I've been to Seattle, Port Townsend, Denver, Washington, Boston, Chicago and Salt Lake city. Kyoto and Nara in Japan, Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Queenstown and Auckland on the other side of the world :-) I've been to quite a few cities in the rest of Europe too, but there's also many I haven't visited yet. I'd love to go to Berlin, never been there. St Petersburg and Moscow, preferrably with someone who speaks some Russian. I've never been to Switzerland at all, so Geneva and some of the valleys and mountains would be nice. I'd love to go back to Prague, I was there for 3 days once about 10 years ago. I'd also like to go back to Riga when it's a bit warmer, and also see Talinn and Vilnius. But of course, the one city I want to back to over and over again, is Vienna. Haven't been there since May last year, and I miss it :-/ Still thinking about trying to find a job there, but it's been nearly 40 degrees there now my friends tell me, so I'd need a job with air condition.

Interesting topic. I've several cities in the world visited, but only in Europe. I was in Berlin, Dusseldorf, Rom, Venice, Vienna, Paris, Belgrade, Split, Athens and some more. I would love to visit London and Washington. Why? I don't know, but I want. Maybe to practice English and meet the people there. Where is Cardiff?
