I got myself in too deep with the walkway repair.

I told my landlord the other day that I was going to start the walkway repair this weekend. It's not going well at all, I'm not going to be able to do this as planned. When I pried up the stones, I figured out why there were problems with it. Whoever installed it years ago decided not to use screenings, and put down plastic sheets instead of fabric. Nothing but dirt under the stones, that's why they were shifting so much. 2 of the stones got broken and they can't easily be replaced since they are at least 20 years old. So now I have to figure out what I'm going to do, and do have thoughts about it. I was given a suggestion that I'm thinking about following. I was told to use one row of stones instead of 2, and go down the center of the walkway. It was suggested that I put flagstone pieces on either side of the stones as well. The other thought is to just put grass on either side of the stones, and just keep a 2 foot wide path. I'm not sure exactly what to do, I need to explore options before I make any decisions regarding this project. This is not going to be easy to figure out, and hopefully I get it done before the summer ends.

Why was you obliged to repair the walkway? It seems that it is certainly not easy job, because it has not been repaired for at least 20 years. And again, will the landlord pay for the materials such as stone, flagstone ,etc.?

I offered to do this as it was hazardous to us living here. I can get free materials, so I'm not worried about cost.

I hope you are able to figure it out. It never goes as easy as it sounds when you start a project. Good luck!

Wow sounds like a huge job but it also sounds like you know what to do. It does seem like it will take time, but if you can complete it am sure you will enjoy the results. Good luck and hope you do get to finish it soon.
