Bye Bye Netflix

Well, Netflix is raising their prices again...second time this year. Currently I have one DVD at a time, unlimited plus unlimited online viewing for a grand total of $9.99. As of September 1 they will be charging $14.99 which is more than my budget can handle. Now, I could choose one or the other...online or DVDs for half that price but their online selection is too limited for me and getting just one DVD at a time would not be cost effective. I can rent a DVD locally for only $1 so I would have to be able to get at least 8 DVDs per month to make staying with Netflix worth it for me. So I have decided to quit Netflix as of September 1. What do you all think of the changes? Is it going to have an effect on your Netflix membership? What changes will you decide on?

I do not use Netflix I don't think they get movies that quick enough especially if have a cheaper membership they limit your access online and such. Why not try the free basic version of Hulu. At least it is free. I go on Hulu a lot because I do not have tv service.

I have basic free hulu but they never have the movies I want. Also, Netflix had the movies I wanted as soon as they were available. I was trying to rent I Am Number Four from the local kiosk and it was constantly rented out. I tried to reserve it and was informed that it had to be checked in for me to reserve it. If that ain't insane, I don't know what is. I finally had to get it through Netflix. I was grateful to have that option. It's not worth the higher price to me, though, so I will be quitting when the price goes up.

Actually, what they have done is separate the two services and make us pay for each price individually rather than have a combination discount. So rather than $9.99 for both services, we now have to pay $7.99 for each service which adds up to $15.98 to get both. I have already stated my reasons for not wanting to drop one or the other of the two services but this will raise the price well beyond my budget.

I brought up that they going to raise prices for Netflix. My dad has neflix for on his computer only. He said they not raising prices for that part only for the services where movies are delivered to home.

I have the same plan as you, unlimited 1 dvd at a time and unlimited instant streaming. But my email told me that as of Sept if I want to keep both my cost will go up to $15.98! I wonder why they gave us different prices. I too am very unhappy about this second price increase, and I don't think this new price is worth what the plan gives. I am really upset because I have around 100 dvds in my queue that are NOT available for instant viewing....but I do not want to continue getting them if it's going to cost me that much. I MAY keep just instant viewing, for a while at least, but I'm still upset about all those movies that aren't available for instant. They need to have more choices for instant streaming.

Your price is correct. I was off by a penny, my bad! I also have a site where I can stream movies for free. Their selection isn't very good but I'd rather rely on them and youtube than pay this kind of price for Netflix!

LOL! After I read your first reponse I was like 'what!?!?! I'm so confused!' But I wish your price was the right one, at least it would be a VERY little bit cheaper. lol. I don't think I would have mentioned a penny difference

In the free market you can choose between Netflix and your local store or Red Box vending machines.

This is true. The only frustration I have with the kiosk is that the new releases are like a battle zone to try and rent. Someone always beats me to it.

Yes, the library is a good free resource. The larger cities' libraries have good selections, too. The library here is pretty sad, to tell the truth. But it's about what you would expect in a town of under 2000 people.

I just posted a discussion against Netflix new price fix on the coming months. This could certainly anger million of Netflix online subscribers. People would consider other options than Netflix. Such increase will not help their business at all. I hope they will understand this market trend. There are many more competitions who will want more customers.

True, my friend. I am just amazed that they would make this move so soon after the last price hike...that one was just a dollar or two but this one is a full five dollars! That is huge comparatively.

I think what they are doing is going to make them lose a lot of there customers. i do the live steaming and i will stay with them but i only do the live steaming because my wife use it for her job and she need something to do when she is not walking about the property. but yeah they are going to lose a lot of customers.

One can only hope that they will be hit hard enough to change their policy but I'm not holding my breath.

I was very upset. And then they try to make it sound good by saying Netflix offers options. Netflix was fine the way it was. They are raising their prices due to the fact that all the rental stores are closing or not doing well. So they raise their prices because they can and that leaves some of the people who belong to Netflix feeling like they don't have a choice. However they are wrong because all the $1 movies that you are talking about are becoming more common everywhere. You have joined me in the outrage and I am only hoping that others also realize that Netflix no longer seems convenient.

Right on. I first joined Netflix because their selection was so good but movies are a luxury, not a necessity so I have no problem going without.

Before the recession I used to be a Netflix member and I also pay the monthly membership. At first I rent many titles but later because I was busy I tend to rent only 1 or 2 titles per month so I was actually wasting my membership fee. Still it was much better than Blockbuster where you can spend much more plus you have to drop by the store all the time and beat the return date before they charge you more. Then the RedBox machines came and it became so convenient for me because its located a few blocks from where I was living, so I decided to quite Netflix. You can just rent a movie for a buck and then return it the next day which is not a problem for me so I just rent on weekends and it saved me a lot of money. Now I live in another country. I miss those red machines but the renting and tickets here are much cheaper so I still love the tradeoff!

Yes, I agree. Movies are not a necessity and Netflix is acting like we can't do without them but the movies are available elsewhere for much less. I will not spend any more than I have to on a movie. In fact, if I can get it for free, I will!

I love netflix. I don't get any DVD's so I watch the collections they have. I have watched some movies I had never thought of seeing and never saw on TV. We gave up HBO etc because those were so expensive. I used to rent dvds but with my health I would forget to take them back so thats why Netflix works so well. I bought the Wii over Christmas so we can watch it on our 42 inch TV I am catching up on episodes of Greys Anatomy I did not get to see. I also have been viewing Wild China it has some breathtaking scenic pictures and really depicts the culture I love my netflix as I usually watch something on my laptop before falling asleep Sorry it did not work for you.

I originally loved Netflix, too, simply because their selection was so good but with the price hike I just cannot afford that. The online selection is not as good as the DVD selection and paying $8 per month for up to 4 DVDs is not worth it for me. I just hope Thor comes in before September 1.

In this economy, many niche companies feel like they can raise prices arbitrarily because most of their competition has disappeared. I think Netflix is following this pattern--they are raising prices again because they think they can. I have only used Netflix on a trial basis, but now I am sure I will never join. If I am going to pay a lot for movies, I would rather go to the movie theater with my family and make an "event" out of it. Otherwise, if my kids and I like a particular movie so much that we want to see it again and again, I'll just buy it!

Yes, I am the same way. If there is a movie I want to see more than six times, it is in my library. With the kiosks at the local grocery stores offering movies for a buck, Netflix isn't very cost effective with their new system.

Here in the UK we have LoveFilm.com we can get out 2 dvds and unlimited online for £14.99 a month which is ok seen as we can get out as many as we want to a month as soon as we send them back we get new ones. Is there a lovefilm equivalent in the US?

That sounds like the UK version of Netflix. I could not afford the price you quote which is similar to what Netflix is doing now. This is why I am quitting Netflix as of September when their prices go up.

I know a lot of people are upset with the changed and the outage that just occurred. My streaming was down for hours here. I'm not really upset with the changes but they aren't going to affect me because all i use is the streaming on the ps3. Even if i did get dvds i wouldn't think that it is that big of a deal. To me its just a couple extra dollars and I am a college student. I will not be canceling my membership with them unless something else goes wrong. I've had netflix for quite some time now and i really enjoy just being able to watch tv shows and movies right away on my ps3.

For those of us on a fixed income this is a major blow. The fact is that the streaming doesn't have the selection that the DVDs do. If you can afford it, that's fine for you. I can't so it is definitely a big deal for me.
