I'm carrying a brick in my backpack now.

All July I've been carrying a backpack, with my first-aid kit, wallet, healthy snack, a sweatshirt, and water bottle. This sounds heavy, but my shoulders quickly got used to it, so now (I've found an old brick with rounded edges at a beach about a week and a half ago) and I've decided to put it into my backpack for more weight and resistance training for my shoulders and legs. Probably by the end of August I'll be pretty strong, as we do a lot of walking as a family. Although I carry my backpack while biking, I won't be carrying the brick in it then, because I might lose my balance or something, but it's definitely good for walking. I remember in high school, I hardly ever used my locker so I stuffed everything into my backpack then and noticed that my shoulders were quite strong back then.

That is a great idea. Adding weight will not only help to build up your muscles in your shoulders, but it will help build muscles in the legs and arms as well. It will also help with your cardio fitness. Over time, you will find it easier and then may want to add a second brick. Soon you will be strong enough to pull a car around with you for fitness!

Haha, not sure about lugging around a car, but I think I can manage a 2nd or 3rd brick if I keep walking every day until the extreme cold hits.

Day 2 of walking with my brick, legs semi-sore, feet sore, but my shoulders feels great. No neck pain. I think it's tougher on my legs because i am still overweight and my brick is kinda adding to the weight. So I guess I'll just stick with the one brick for a good few months. I'm also sweating a lot especially in my back.

It good that you are trying to stay fit but I worry about all the weight being on your shoulders. I'm not a doctor but it sounds a bit off. Maybe alternate between carrying the backpack with your hands while walking. Variety is good. While walking "Stop! Squat time" etc.

You can sneak those squats in at the store, checking out the stuff on the bottom shelves as that is where they put less expensive stuff. Name brand goes at eye level.

Oh, I do take some breaks, like I'll take it off and carry it in my hands when I'm in a small store, or in the grocery cart at the grocery store, even it's it's just a few items I"m picking up. That's a good idea, to stop and do a couple of squats - I'll do that when I'm walking through the wooded pathway so that nobody would think i'm a lunatic

First, I need to start carrying a back pack, then I can put a brick in it. It sounds as if you have it figured out. My daughter's backpack was pretty heavy when she was in school.

If you do go down that route you might have a really sore neck (the back part) plus sore shoulders for the first month or so, but it'll be easier. My body is used to carrying weights as I been lugging around heavy books in school, then groceries to my backpack brim from time to time while walking at least a kilometre, and when I was single and going to food banks, I had a really hard time carrying my food home in a backpack and a duffle bag. My body's naturally stronger than average anyway, so that's probably why I can tolerate it more.

This sounds like a really great plan and will help strengthen the shoulder and back is my thought. I too have been a carrier as well and find that my arms and legs are my stronger points in my body.

That's really encouraging to hear that you got stronger as well. I hope that I'll also get stronger so that my husband would actually notice it. :-)

I remember those good old days, during my high school years I was also one of those that never utilized a locker. There were so many locker break-in's that all through my years, I never once requested one. So like you I carried my backpack everywhere and god most of my books were heavy. At that time, I pretty much got used to it, it didn't bother, but now I can't stand to carry them. Everytime I go to the park or to a theme park we normally take a backpack with snacks extra clothing just incase for the children and other essential items, but my hubby normally carries it. I carry it for an hour and I start experiencing back pains, I can't stand it. But you are right, may be I should trying it, in order to get my shoulder and back in a better condition.

I been doing it on a regular basis, but I took a small break yesterday so that I can let my muscles rebuild. Plus it was super-hot yesterday, too. I think I'll put the brick back into my backpack today

Hi, thanks for the warning, but I'm wondering if you can elaborate on how it can cause complications? My brick is only about 2kg.

You have your back pack and I have a purse that is like a back pack with all the essential that I would need when I'm out in it. What you are taking with you is a essential bag all the things that you will need just in case when you are out. So you won't have to buy anything that you already have with you. The funny thing about that is this when you start taking thing out that is when you need it the most. Your right about the backpack in school. It was heavy and I used my locker some of the time but not all of the time. Most of the time I had everything in my backpack. The brick only use that when walking or even biking not every day. I know that it's for getting in shape so only use it for that.

that sounds like a good plan. You're getting more fit and healthier as you go. I need to get more fit and active, but I really don't do very much to get that way. I've got to start doing something though. I've already noticed I wake up sore for no reason, and I really have to stop that.

Yeap, I just came back home and I'm sweating like a pig! Hubby says it's a good sign that my back is sweating, that means i'm burning off the fat, which is good. Hmm, sore? I know I used to sleep a lot and I'd get headaches from sleeping too much, I mean that's what happened to me especially in my deep depression period. But where are you sore? I also was very sore in my lower back, to the point where I was bedridden for a day at a time, sometimes 2 days, and was on prescription painkillers and muscle relaxants. I got so fed up with the medication putting me to sleep artifically that I spoke to my doctor and asked her if I could do something else, and she referred me to physiotheraphy. It turned out that my stomach muscles were quite weak, and that my back muscles were strained from doing all the work of supporting my whole trunk.

Well good for you. In India we don't have any such things as all school and college going students have lots of books and hence makes bags heavy and with the subjects and the amount that they try to get into their head. Its frustrating and really hard for them. We don't even have the locker systems in here nowadays! I hope u can work on yourself with this new idea. Kepe it up! Cheers!

To be honest, the conveniences in the western world tend to make us lazy and unfit/unhealthy, and I'd rather do more work than most people here in North America like you Easterners do. I just came back from a round trip to the bank and back to home, and found it isn't very heavy at all, as I thought it would be. I did sweat a lot in the back, though, which Hubby said it's a great sign I'm the way to weight loss.

Oh, I had thought you were carrying the brick as a form of protection! I'm not sure if that would help you to become stronger, but it is worth a shot. I don't think I would do it, because I would be worried about overworking or straining my shoulders, because thetas where the weight would be packed on. If I wanted to become stronger, I would suggest lifting weights, because then you would strengthen your whole arm, rather than just your shoulders, and you would be able to open jars and lift other things more easily!

Might not be a bad idea to use it for protection! But no, it's not allowed in Canada to carry a concealed weapon. But anyway, you do have a point, and I should use Hubby's dumbbells - they're 5kg each, which is good for my strength. I'm pretty strong anyway, but it's good to tone up my flabby muscles :-)

That sounds like an interesting idea. When I carry a backpack, I didn't realize that I've really gotten used to the weight. If you keep it up, you might have to find another brick someday. It's also interesting that if you take an item out, you can notice that it's lighter.

Actually, it's funny that you said that because I was thinking of the same thing. I just came back from a round trip to the bank and back home again, I was sweating in the back a lot, which is a good sign for weight loss, but I didn't find the bag as heavy as I expected it to feel. I know I'm going to have to find another old brick somewhere soon.

Yeah I agree with that keeping you fit. However it may take its toll on you if you do it excessively. Some things like back problems i.e. slipped discs, scoliosis and etc. would in the later part of your life. I suggest you do it in moderation and try to mix things up a little bit. Good luck on getting fit. we're on the same boat in here.

Thanks for the advise, I know to keep a variation in my movements, but it is working my leg muscles as well as my shoulder muscles. I'm also doing some Pilates, but will be doing Pilates every day my kids go to school when school begins again in September. I definitely won't be carrying my brick while biking, though.
