On Comforts and Contentment

People often seek contentment in comforts. I won't say these are pitched opposite to each other, but surely, these have no direct interrelation. Comforts may provide contentment, but rarely, while contentment does not care for comforts. Both comforts and contentment don't come one's way on their own but are sought intentionally through conscious efforts. In my opinion, one should make efforts to seek contentment, rather than comforts. But this opinion is mine to which most of the people don't agree in practice, although they don't deny it in words. Contentment is a mental state rather than a physical one, while the comforts work at physical level. Therefore, to seek contentment, one has to orient his/her mind towards contentment, and satisfaction therefrom. Material possessions are not opposed to contentment, but surely they provide comforts. A contentment seeker minimizes his/her needs as the first precondition. We neither work for contentment nor for comforts directly, but for money. It is upto the person whether he/she buys comforts or contentment from the money he/she earns.

Hello friend, Although Idon´t think that contentment should be sought in comfort, I also understand that there can be no mental satisfaction if some needs are not taken care of first. I am aware that I can have the time to think and decide because I have had all my basic needs(food, shelter, education, health). I can even understand that some people need to have 5 TVs of the latest models while I can he happy with a second hand book. I am the rich one, because I am past that stage of material need. And the reason is because I have not ever lacked basic comfort. I think all this not only up to the person, but has to do a lot of how society as a whole is doing.

I am aware that this is in part a social peoblem centered in showing material goods (to have) instead of placing the goal in spiritual goods (to be). I was lucky in my upbringing, but I recognise that I am not the mayority.

Yes, my loved Marguicha, basic needs are to be satisfied efore a person could think of comforts and contentment. My discussion relates to stage beyond this fulfillment of basic needs. There is no limit for wanting more, while there is not much required to get contentment.

when a person is in hunger for food ,only the eatable food can be given to get the contentment or satisfaction. If a person is in a rainy weather he needs shelter ,it can be a tree or a little hut.If the person gets the tree he should feel happy and satisfied as not to wish for a comfort big bunglow where there is fire and lots of comfort things. Some things we need ,some things we need but its okay we can live without them.So it is the human nature and the inner wishes which hold all these, all to gether a persons situations, surroundings, life depends on himself or herself. Material or non material, if a humna thinks in himself the satisfaction towards that certain thing then everythign seems to be happy and good. It is only how the human nature thinks.

hello Ram, I agree with you, contentment is about mental state and is different from comfort. Thu comfort includes emotion and feelings, but more of physical aspect. When someone having a luxurious life it is considered a "comfort" for the person, but doesn't mean contentment. Not everyone having a comfortable life is also contented with their life. And contentment cannot be found or attained from luxury, power nor fame. Contentment is a profound feeling whilst comfort is easier to define. have a good day jaiho®

Yes, my dear 'J', you got the point, but a slip in the second sentence. The second word should be 'contentment' and not 'comfort'. Such mistakes do take place when mind is not in calm state. Please be a cool thinker, you are a great expressive writer, having prospects to outshine. My best wishes are always with you.

It is not how much we have but what we make of what we have is the route to contentment. Thee is no limit to how much one wants in life and if one is not able to make the best of what one has no amount of comfort as you put it will satiate anyone.

Very rightly put, my friend, it is of great importance what we make of what we have. That is the route of finding contentment.
