Have You Ever Had to Ask For Government Assistance?

My husband no longer has a job he has been out of work for about 5 weeks now, and unemployment turned us down. I had to apply for government healthcare for my kids. I don't like to have to do that, but we only have the small amount of money I make on line to live with, so we had to. Have you ever had to ask the government for help?

Yes, we have had to ask for assistance before and still are asking. We are of the type that seems to fall through the huge holes in the system however. I am disabled and applying for disability for the 5th time in about 13 years now. The keep denying my claim and we keep applying. We have also gotten food stamps for about 6 months 2 years ago when my wife lost a job and was unable to find other work for nearly a year. My own "drama" with applying for disability is such a mess!!! The reason they continually deny my claim is that I don't have sufficient medical records and there is no show of being treated for my disabilities. On the other hand, without having a job and employer sponsored health insurance I am not able to see the doctors I need to document the disability and/or seek treatment. Add to the above paragraph that one of my debilitating conditions is agoraphobia. This makes leaving my home even for a short while an extremely stressful experience. Just riding in a car is such a bad experience that I am left exhausted and overwhelmed by the time we get back to our home. We have asked for assistance when we needed it most and nearly always we are turned away. Usually we are turned down for food stamps and medical assistance because my wife's earnings are about 100 to 200 a month more than the qualifying level of income to receive the assistance.

I am very sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to my dad. He was just a few hundred dollars above the line where he could get assistance. After he had a stroke though and ended up in the hospital the hospital helped him to get set up with some things. Can you leave the house if you have a sedative? Walgreen's Take Care clinics are pretty reasonable, I don't know if they could treat what you have, but they are a good affordable option if you have to pay out of pocket, unfortunately what they can do is limited though.

I do leave the house about twice a week, about as often as my wife can force me to do it. We are so far in debt over medical stuff that out of pocket is not an option and the wife's work sponsored insurance covers less than 10% of all medical. We are still looking for options however.

I am so sorry that you've had to do this. I don't blame you, I don't like medicaid either. I was on it for so long through my mother and applied for it afterwards but never finished the paperwork because I just don't like having to rely on that at all. I hope that your husband can find work again soon. I know this must be a very stressful period for you so I hope that you can find some more opportunities online as well, and good luck!

The government of my home country have many benefits on offer for those eligible. When a person is disabled then after three months Disablity Living Allowance can be applied for. It can be for care and for mobility. I got the care one when my disabled son reached four months old and the mobility one when he was three years old. When my disabled son reached two years old he got a Blue Badge. I am his carer and his Blue Badge goes in my car when I am driving him around. My son has spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Everyone, with rare exception has needed help! No one brings it up during casual conversation, that's all. We had to ask for help twice when we were bringing up our kids. You are not alone in this believe me! I come from the investment banking industry and I have a mental list of people who were surprised by hard times! Then there are all the stories our stars and celebrates have shared about their toughest of days. Even Brad Pitt. He lived in the 9th Ward in New Orleans, growing up in his uncle's house without his parents. Asking for help is not the problem, the problem arises only when the question is raised: "How content you are with staying in that position?"

I hate having to ask for help. Especially when the government budget is so out of control. My husband is trying as hard as he can to get a job as soon as possible. With no income though and having to pay out of pocket for my health insurance and my husband's it is nice to have the state as an option to pay for kids. We will be out of this situation as soon as possible.

Yes I have. We have been in many different tight situations. Don't let that get you down. I feel as long as a person/ family is working and is trying hard to take care of themselves who need a little help that's fine. It's people who don't want to work at all and want to be taken care of all the time is what gets me. Healthcare for children is important and it's what they really need. If getting it from the government is what you had to do in order to take care of them then that's what needs to be done. When things improve you will more than likely have to get off :).

Yes I had toost my job and then I got pregnant. I had to get government assistance, I got medicacde for my pregnancy becu=ause I didn't have insurance and I applie for food stamps. My boyfriend was just making enough to get the rent and bills paid. it was hard for me to get a job, people really didn't want to hire a pregnant woman. Now we are doing fine my son is four months old and everything is good.

I have had it in the past when I needed it. I could actually really use it right now, but I think I am JUST above the maximum income level to qualify.

I certainly can't blame you for feeling this way, and I'm sorry that you've had to resort to this. My husband and I are at the point where we're considering government assistance, welfare, and such. However, we haven't done it yet, since it's not what we like to do. We much rather work for anything we earn. So, I can understand how difficult it can be, when it's not something that you want to do. But sometimes, you have to do what you have to do, in order to provide for your family.

Yes, we used unemployment for about ten months back in 2001. This was when the economy got real bad and many people were laid off. My husband was one of them. We didn't feel happy about using unemployment, but it definitely helped us survive. I hope your hubby will find a job soon!

I had never ask for government assitance in my entire life, there is no reason for me to do that, i had been gainfully employed for many years and always live within my means, it is more like government is asking for my assistance instead of me asking for the government assistance since i am more than willing to help myself for a better life through hard work rather than wait for government to give me a better life through welfare.

I've never sought for government help before but you gotta do what you gotta do, right? If you need help and it concerns your family's financial needs then with any means necessary, you just gotta do it, I know I would do the same.

Sadly I have been out of work for over a year. I am sure that if I went to the Government assistance here I would qualify. To date I have not but wanted to say to you lady, there is nothing wrong with you doing so. This is why we pay some taxes as it goes to those who need it some day. You husband paid into those taxes too so there is nothing wrong with you getting the help your family needs. I don't have small children, if mine were small and I was in the predicament I am in, I would absolutely go and get the help needed. I do hope things pick up for you all as I am sure they are not providing enough.

No, I haven't. My parents support me. I hope you get the assistance from the government and get over the hard time.
