How's Your Filing?

I've decided I'm going to start on this chaos that is my house by clearing away some of these papers that seem to be accumulating around the area where I keep the phone and computer. I've located a hole punch and an empty ring binder, so I'm going to start by just sticking everything that looks important into a binder so it's at least in one place. Sorting it out can wait until another day. Do you have a filing system in place? Is it really organised or an overflowing drawer / intray / envelope? How often do you revisit it to throw away old stuff? When I sold my house I had a huge bonfire when I burnt papers dating back about 10 years.

Organized is my middle name , actually my real middle name is Elizabeth, lol. I have all my bill statements in one clear poly folder and my bank statement in another. I have a small envelope I made with the little notes on where to buy what. Every time I see a product I will get on another trip I jot it down so I put all the notes in a small envelope. Then I have all these small notes for when I'm online.I hear of a site or want to check someone or something, i jot it down and then keep them in a pile near my laptop. But the one thing I'm so proud of is my VHS index. Every show and movie I have on tape is written in the index and on it's on directory sheet. So I can check where it is by title or by which tape it is on. I must confess that I have a list of tapes that need to be written up but it does help find a specific movie.

I would love to knock you up but I don't have the funds to cross the pond.

Blimey! Perhaps you should pop round and try and make some sense of my place! Actually, I DO know where things are providing noone moves them, but that's because I have very good memory for where i saw things last and not because there's a system in place.

Filing is simply one of the tasks I detest; if this is a subject in college, I'd have failed miserably. I'd have prepared binders and folders, but to really file the documents and papers in the proper and right place seem such a huge task! I'd leave the papers in a box (titled 'for filing') and leave them there until it overflows; then I'd either dump the box in the store room, or really tidy up (which is rare )!

Half way! LOL...I do have some of my papers filed in an organized file...but then suddenly I get busy and just put them all in a drawer. I need to do some fall house cleaning too...and get organized!

Systems are all very well and good whilst you stay on top of them, but if you dare to turn your back for a minute the papers start to breed in drawers and desktops.

I don't file. All my important papers are sitting somewhere on my desk.. or perhaps have fallen under it. I'm very disorganized!

sounds like my system. but I do have an idea where everything is, providing noone tried to tidy it up for me.

I have my drawers in my room for all the papers, bills and important documents. I have files for personal data in one folder neatly filed for each of my family,me,my partner and my kids files. Then, one drawer contains folders with specific names for each billings -this is for the paid ones. The upper drawer if for all the unpaid bills and other docu that still needs to be processed. So,it's easy for me to sort out what paper and docu do i still need and what are supposed to be thrown away. have a good day jaiho®

This reminds me of something that I still have to do. I have an accordion type of envelope that I keep in a drawer. All the papers that tend to accumulate gets thrown into this 'temporary container' in the hopes that one day I will have time and the motivation to sit down and sort through it. I'm still waiting for that day!

A temporary storage space becomes a permanent space really quickly ....

Hubby crams everything into a drawer, except some bank statements he keeps in binders. I have several file cabinets, and I need to set aside a day to use them. I used to clear them out on New Year's Day. It sounds like a good start for you and it will make you feel as if you got something done.

I think if i had a decent system set up I could stick to it. But when the system is all to pot i tend to leave them all in a heap and they build up astonishingly quickly.

I file my bills and correspondence but it tends to stack up in a basket on top of a file cabinet in my computer room. The file cabinet is the one my grandpa gave my dad when he graduated high school. Every few months I empty the basket into the right folders. I have stuff from 7 years ago that I should get rid of.

Chucking stuff out is very therapeutic, if you ever get time to do it.

i hate paperwork, it never does what i want it to. i'm sure it breeds, when i am not around, as the amount of paper i have in my home seems to grow no matter how much time i spend sorting it out. i hope you are successful in putting it all in files, but you can't trust it you know, it will escape and cause havoc while you are out, and mess up your home again. i think the bonfire is the only solution.

The bonfire is so tempting, or the compost heap at the very least. But this little voice keeps telling me I might need it one day. What for, I have no idea.
