An update on the baby gerbil.

Well, I determined the gender of this baby accurately last night. Not a girl but a boy. This morning, I found him in the tank, still alive, but his body was cold. I took him out and warmed him up. Then I fed him a little. He looks worse today than he did yesterday. It looks like he has a respiratory infection, and somehow I think his leg is broken, not deformed as there looks to be a lot of swelling around the bend. The other babies are fine, even though they can't see, they're still running around the tank like crazy. The 2 grays are male, and the 2 blacks are female from what I could tell last night. Gerri must be feeding the runt as I've seen him under her several times, and he doesn't take much at all when I try to feed him. I'm still very worried about him, and am not optimistic about the outcome. I have a sad feeling that he wont be alive by the end of the weekend. If I had caught this sooner, it would be a different story I'm sure, but I never thought anything of it when the babies were still confined to the nest. If this is the case, then the females will be finding homes when weaned and the sole male will be left behind with his father.

I am very sorry to hear that your baby gerbil is even more poorly so I wish him luck. You did all you could to help him. It is lovely the other baby gerbils are two gray males and two black females. I had gerbils when I was a teenager and in my twenties. I found an all female group or two males were lovely to have.

Well he is still alive, I fed him a couple of times and the mother has been allowing him to nurse, which is a good sign. He's hanging in there, hoping for the best.

I am still hoping the little one has made it to date as it sounds like you have done a great deal to keep him alive. I find it intriguing on how you can determine their gender. Best of luck with him.
