Day Sleeping

I've been up all night. I'm tired, but the pain I'm having in my legs is keeping me up. I've been putting off taking a pain pill because it makes me sleepy and plus, I really don't want to take a pain pill if I have to. It's like Tylenol has been prescribed to me. It's stronger because Tylenol doesn't work. Anyway, that's not my point. I'm fine. I'm feeling very good. But I'm thinking I'm going to have to give in and take the pill. Which means I'll be sleeping quite a while - during the day (it is 5:39am as I'm writing this). Obviously I'm not going to a job, and I don't have any appointments today. I'm not even supposed to go to my parent's home today to help my dad with my mother. It just seems weird to sleep so much during the day. Because when I go to sleep because of medicine, it's not like I only take a nap. I sleep at least 3 to 4 hours. Do you have any problems sleeping during the day? Does it get your system "out of wack"? I know some people if they take a long nap during the day, they cannot sleep at night. But of course sometimes you just have to have a nap depending what you've been doing. And then there are the people who work at night, and their sleeping has to be during the day. What do you think?

so sorry Ambie. I know about not wanting to take pills that put you to sleep. with my luck though i may have to do that after my surgery and i dont look forward to it. ive never been one to like sleeping a lot anyway. i figure i'll get to sleep long enough when the big sleep comes. my son has trouble sleeping during the day and sometimes has to take a sleeping pill for he works nights and everyone else here doesnt and makes noise just living. you know

They'll probably have you on some heavy duty pain medication after your surgery, have you had to have many surgeries?

I feel for you. I have nights like that too that my legs bother me and I can't sleep. I try not to take pain pills unless I just can't tolerate the pain anymore. I don't like to sleep during the day because it does mess with my system.

@ carol or ambie, do you ever try a "rice bag" You take a tube sock, fill it with cheap white rice. Heat it in the microwave for about a minute or two. Use that as a heat pack, it is very soothing and conforms to the shape of whatever hurts, and it will not hurt you. I even put lavender essential oil on mine to improve my sleep.

I would wonder what you could do for your legs, that is miserable. If I really need to sleep in the day, I do, and it does not mess me up, but I do not need to take a pill to get to sleep and the sleep is more natural. Those pain pills, and even melatonin, make me have really strange dreams and wake up feeling tired. Have you tried taking magnesium at bedtime. It could very likely help your legs, as well as your migraines. I know I say magnesium for almost everything. I find that if the weather is changing I may drop off where ever I am and sleep twenty or thirty minutes. I sleep fine at night as well, though.

You told me about the magnesium a long time ago, and I still take it. So I've learned a lot from you! Oh, and the pain in the legs is no big deal. It happens every now and then because of the fibromyalgia, and I have restless leg.

I usually stay up all night anyhow. That is my time to do my online work. My boyfriend likes me to spend the days with him and sometimes I take a nap when I'm over there. If I don't get to take a nap over there then on the nights I have school I'm very tired and sleepy and I have to take energy shots and energy drinks and lots of tea and coffee to get through the evening. Then when I get home I'm very buzzed and I could not go to sleep if I tried. I am thinking about declaring one night a week as my 'off' night and just refusing to do online work and just going straight to bed so I can catch up on the sleep that I'm missing during the rest of the week.

I generally do not sleep during the day as interrupted sleep cause me to get headaches. Sadly it is enough with the 1 - 2 I generally get daily. I hope you can develop a routine sleeping pattern as it has to be difficult. If I ever managed to sleep 3 or more hours during the day I would be up all night. Wishing you several nights sleeps Ambie.

Headaches! I wish I could sleep those off. My friend told me she can just go to sleep and when she wakes up they will be gone. But I can't sleep off a migraine for anything. The pain is too bad to sleep.

I think it's because of the sleep time that you get that your body system goes a bit haywire. As for me, I used to sleep at around 11 pm and get up at 5 or 6 am, but recently because of my sickness that I'm not able to sleep at the normal time. I know it's ironic, knowing that I have to sleep well to get rest and get better, but it's just that because of the uncomfortable feeling that I'm not able to sleep at the right time.

Well I know what it is like to be in pain and have problems sleeping. And then when you take something to help with the pain, like a pain pill it ends up making you really tired and usually sluggish to where you just want to sleep all day. And then your sleep patterns continue to be screwed up for a while. I had to take a pain pill yesterday for my leg, and now I feel like I am dragging still. But hope the pain is better.

Awwww, I feel so bad for you Ambie. Yes, I do know about all those crappy pills and I despise them all, but they do help. What is wrong with your legs that I missed? I did something (don't know what) back in December to my hip which in turn messed up my upper right thigh. The pain was excrutiating (sp?) and I couldn't walk. My daughter had to take me to the hospital around 10:00 at night because I couldn't stand it no more. That was the first time in 30 years I went to the hospital, so she knew the pain was unbearable. My blood pressure was way past 200. Anyway, to make a long story short, they loaded me with pills and I was laid up for 1 1/2 months on my back, and all I did was sleep. I hated it completely. Pills and I don't agree, they just make me ill. That's a very, very short version of what happened, lol! Right now they have me on BP medicine, the second try, because I keep getting sick on them. The last pill they gave me was Lisinipril and I've been very sick on it. I just quit all pills 3 days ago because I'm tired of feeling this way and I already feel better. Strange the effects they all cause. Hope you feel better today and your pain eases up.

That is some mighty high blood pressure! The leg pain is just from my fibromyalgia. The main problem I have fron that is pain in my face, arms, or legs. So it's not that big of a deal.

Hi AmbiePam sorry to hear about the pain in your legs. I hope they won't keep you up all night too often. I hope you're feeling well. Well, about this one, I work during the night, 9pm to 6am. And I have a kid going to school at 8am so when I get home, what I do is fix him first and then clean myself, face the computer, like what I am doing now to get sleepy. Day sleeping is really different, you know. I have experienced sleeping for 8 hrs straight during the day but when I wake up at night, I still feel tired and wants to go back to bed. But when I sleep during the night, even if it is just 4-6 hours, I feel somehow refreshed and energetic getting up in the morning. They said that our body, naturally repairs itself during the night while we sleep, so If you are awake during these repair time, the body won't be able to fully do its work. And the fact that our system is used to sleeping during the night, it is really hard for our body to adjust sleeping during the day.

I sleep all the time during the day then I have trouble sleeping at night. The doctors think I might have narcolepsy because I fall asleep so easy during the day and my "naps" are at least two hours each. I too take pain meds for neck spasms that I have been having and a muscle relaxer. This complicates my situation because the doctors don't know if the meds are making me sleep more but I always got sleepy during the day. When I was a kid I had a sleep study done because they thought I was having mini seizures during the day. I get so sleepy I am zombified.

When I was on muscle relaxers I was often sleepy. That's why they told me to try to take them only at night. But sometimes you have to take them in the day, so that probably affects a lot of people. Have they ever thought you might have sleep apnea? It's characterized by falling asleep a lot and not feeling rested.

Can't you use something that can take away the pain and at the same time not put you into sleep? Maybe some pain killers in cream form? But still, it will be good for you to get that much needed rest. There is nothing wrong with too much resting for a day. At least it is through sleeping and sleeping is the best form of rest. If you won't be able to sleep during the night, then spend it productively by doing myLot.

I'm not too concerned about the pain in my legs. That's rare. The pain medicine is actually for my back. I was in a really bad car accident 12 years ago and it did a lot of damage to my neck and back. Unfortuntely, creams only work on minor pain. But the good thing was I compromised and took half of the pain pill. It ended up taking away the pain and it only made me sleepy enough to fall asleep for an hour and a half. Which is nowhere near as long as I thought it would make me sleep.

Dear Ambie, hope you are better by now, and wont need meds for leg pains any more. As I am close to a burn out or even have a burn out already I was very tired also during the day in the last months. I dont give in and get a nap when it happens, at least not regularly, cause I work from Mon to Fri so no naps then anyways. But I am still really tired on weekends and when I take a nap its then also 3 hours at a time. But normally it wont affect my night sleep and I get enough of that too.

Hi AmbiePam, my family members as well as me have the siesta habit daily. I find I'm full of vigor after having a 30 minutes or so sleep in the afternoon. It's said that it's more beneficial to have a nap whenever we are tired than to have longer night sleeping. Feeling tired or exhausted is the signal asking us to have an authentic proper rest to regain energy If we still keep on working and ignore how exhausted we are for we have been overworking and lack of energy, this would affect our health seriously if we persist to do so for long period of time. So treat ourselves better and always feel free to have a short nap or proper sleep whenever we are tired, no matter it's night or day time. It's exactly a torture to force ourselves to work if feeling drowsy Happy posting

I had to work from 5 pm last night till about 2:30 this morning and had to be back at work at 11 am. I had trouble falling asleep last night even though I was up later than usual. I had to wind down from work. I will probably end up going to bed tonight about the same time I normally do and I will be fine tomorrow morning. I have not really ever had trouble with getting back on a normal sleeping schedule before.

Doctors normally prescribe pain killers to be taken during the night for the same reason that if they are taken during the day then drowsiness will take over. I hate pain killers myself and would never take them even if I have to suffer the pain. If you could wade through the day without the pill and get into the habit of taking it during the night if you must, you could be up and about during the day imho.

HI Ambie! I feel bad for you but I just like you I can't take a nap in just a few minutes. If I want to get to sleep it always such a long hours. That is why I never dare to sleep or try to sleep in certain time. Taking a nap is just not my habit. But I got no problem for night sleep if I need to sleep late because my eyes will automatic cooperate with me very well to sleep in this and that certain hours and wake up at time I wanted.(^^)
