Riots and looting going on........will police get it under control?

August 10, 2011 9:23am CST
Some of you in other countries may be aware of the riots and looting going on here in England over the past few nights. I am based in Manchester and today it has really started to rain so we are hoping this will put them off a bit and stop it from happening again tonight. However, other areas are still having decent weather which the police are more concerned may mean people are happy to come out again to loot. Up to now people have been killed and just on the news one injured lad has his backpack looted by youngsters who made it look like they were helping him up whilst his face was bleeding and then robbed him! Absolutely disgraceful and it makes me disgusted. What are your thoughts on what is going on here at the moment?

I'm not really clear on why the riots started. I have heard that it was all because someone was shot by the police. We were in England in 2007 and the one thing that really stood out for us was how polite and orderly the English are. I'm in the US. I am shocked. I am concerned for all of you there and can only hope that this terrible madness ends soon.

That's really awful. We stayed in Croydon when we were there, it is such a beautiful city. There is so much wonderful history there, we were just speechless visiting Croydon and London. It's horrible that people are destroying any part of it. It's just my opinion, but my husband and I believe there is nothing here in the US that compares to the beauty & historical value of England. It makes me sick to my stomach knowing people are destroying it out of hate and anger and I worry about all of the innocent people getting hurt.

Yes they started by saying it was because somebody got shot but, then they started just doing the looting because they could or thought they could but, today the police have made many arrests and seized goods and it seems to be calming down which is good.

I started a discussion on this in the early hours of this morning whilst I was watching it on Sky news. (Please check my discussion) I think it is disgusting and the total disrespect these morans are showing is disgraceful. One youth was interviewed for Sky and said that the reason people are doing it is because they have no job, no money and no prospects. He was trying to rationalise it by using the recession as an excuse. Personally I find this a disgusing reason I have been directly affected by the recession having lost two jobs through redundancy and I'm still out of work a year later. I'm not wanting to go out looting, ruining peoples livelihoods, attacking people and putting the emergeny services personnel at risk. I was born in Manchester, my mums family is from there, I've worked there and spend a lot of time there as I only live 30 minutes away, and worringly there were reports that there were incidents in other parts of Greater Manchester and Tameside that were only 15 minutes away from me. My friend contacted me to say she had to go and pick her boyfriend up as all trains in and out of Manchester had been cancelled, so indirectly in did affect people in my area. I just think it's disgusting and wish these morans would grow up, get some respect and an understanding of the real world. I never thought I'd say this but I was so happy when it started to rain!

I saw the same reports - I mean come on.....you know not to hurt people, rob and cause trouble just because you lost your job because you know right from wrong and yet these people use this as an excuse! It's pathetic! I agree with you that I never thought I would be glad to see the rain either!

Have you been into the centre today, what's going on? I've been on Facebook and there are reports that people are going again tonight to cause trouble, I just hope it's idiots that are stirring it. The scary thing was yesterday me and my boyfriend went shopping in Stockport after changing our minds about going into Manchester. If we had gone there we would have still been there around 7pm and would have very likely been caught in the middle of it, very sobering thoughts.

No I haven't been in the centre today as wanted to avoid it but, I do hope like you say it is people just stirring and actually they won't go out causing more damage! I don't live far from Stockport either really - lets hope it doesn't spread to anywhere that hasn't already had issues.

Some of my family are from the Manchester Area, so I found this extremely horrifying. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of behaviour. However, because of things like the Human (Criminal) Rights act, the police have much less powers to act than they did years ago. Younger people these days are being brought up with no respect for their elders, and have no discipline either. In other countries looters are executed on the spot, while not advocating that should happen in this country, there needs to be some kind of instant retribution to concentrate the minds of these violent people, so they know instantly what will happen to them.

Exactly and if parents were allowed to discipline better without being worried about getting in trouble themselves then maybe these youths would not be acting this way or possibly not as many of them anyway!

I've heard that it's happening, but I haven't heard why it's happening. It sucks and it's really scary. I hope it comes to an end very soon!

The bad people are saying they are doing it because they can't get jobs but, that is ridiculous! There are many people who cannote get jobs and don't choose to cause trouble! It does seem to have calmed today and they have made many, many arrests and seized a lot of the stolen goods so that is good work of the police and hopefully that will continue

Hi Impressions become negative when I heard all these. For the last few days, the news papers and TVs were given really a different shape of the situations about the fact. Till today, it was my conviction that people in those areas are rich in culture and well mannered. But when it comes to reality, all such things are quite common wherever it may be. I just remember some proverb that situations can lead to any good ones to any bad stage. Hope thing will improve and better in future. Thnak-s

Well recently I haven't been watching the news, but I always see the articles about the events there on Yahoo! and other current affairs site. I'm saddened by it, I hope you and your family there are doing fine and unhurt. Please be careful when going out.

Today on British television the prime minister said he would bring to justice the criminals rioting and looting. I hope that more rain happens to it puts off all this criminal behavior. It is sick some people have been killed. The ones that robbed the youngster should be ashamed of themselves. I am horrified of the riots and looting going on and I don't think the police are having much success stopping all this going on. It may be a few weeks before the police get the streets under control. I am worried for friends living in London and Manchester. Where I live isn't perfect either because a few weeks ago my friend got mugged after using a cash machine. It makes me stay in after dark.

It is so annoying they the police couldn't take more action straight away - if it was me in charge I would have given the order to at least use the plastic bullets as they first suggested to give these criminals a shock and a taste of their own medicine to those people they were hurting or attacking!

Few night ago I seen burning Croydon in London. I could see it from my windows and I was scared that violence will spread up to place where I live. I feel sorry for all people who lost homes and businesses trough violence and looting. I can't imagine how they feel now. I got one question to police. Why they just stood there and did absolutely nothing. Why they did not protect people? What for we pay taxes?

I have always dreamed of living in England. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to live in. I know this is just an episode the country is going through. I hope the people who are joining the riots will come to their senses and realize that the mayhem they are causing will only worsen things.

I know it is horrible! Things seem better today and people invloved have started to be arrested and so will now hopefully see the consequences of their actions

It's really nice to hear from someone actually living there in a time like this. Currently, in my city, there are some gang firebombings going on, but that's as close as it is over here in Canada. I can't imagine how scary it is over there. I had the privilege of spending a week in London, and to see that this sort of thing is happening in such a lovely place kind of breaks my heart.

Thankfully it has all calmed down now and all those involved are getting punished as they should although I imagine there may be a fair few who do not come into justice unfortunately
