The rise of the machines. Have we become their slaves?

I was discussing with a friend just now about the different ways we did some things when we were young. And I remembered the movie about the rise of the machines (from Terminator, remember?) and thought that maybe now noone has time just because we have become slaves of machines. Then there was a time to talk to real people looking at each other´s eyes. Now I wonder how my grandchildren meet his friends. They are either at the computer or with a cellphone or listening to music without any awareness of the world outside. When I had my shoulder surgery I could not ride in public transportation because youngsters were oblivious that other people, older, were needing some room. It seemed they were at another galaxi. Do you feel that the world has changed with no posibilities of snatching some good points from the past? I´d love to read answers from people from all ages. I know us, old people, tend to think that our world had a lot of better sides Share

As technology progresses different advantages and disadvantages spur from it. To be honest, technology and machines are a big benefit for the human race. It makes life easier and instant. However, there is such thing as needing to adjust and closing the technological and cultural lag. That is where the problem lies. If people can't close in the cultural lag in this technological times, that makes technology a problem. This means that man is not adapting well to changes and that technology is rapidly changing and while man's adjustment is lagging. If we can balance the rate and pace that the technology grows with how humans adjust, then there will be no problem at all. We can't control change but we should control the rate of change and the rate of our adjustment to change. I think those younger generation who just live with the technological world haven't adapted pretty well with the cultural lag making them slaves of technology. They feel that they will be outdated with technology that they tend to use all of their time in technology to catch up which shouldn't be the case. They should seek balance with technology so they won't be corrupted by it. Just my two cents in here.

I liked your use of the word "balance". It seems that´s where we should aim. And I am afraid that youngsters are not doing it properly and older people are not controling the situation either because they have let it get away from their hands.

Yes, definitely, technology has changed our world a lot and eventually they will destroy it for us. Just imagine, how many jobs are being done by machines and many people lost/lose their jobs because they are becoming redundant. Of course, it is faster to use machines, it is cheaper than human resources and has no complaints. Every business man wants lots of work being done in less time and with less money. So machines are the best solutions. Of course, technology has helped us a lot, but nowadays we just want to have the latest versions of PCs, cars, mobile phones and any other gadget. People communicate more and more on facebook, different messengers or cell phones and when they meet, they don't have anything to share. I prefer real life contact instead of virtual one, but I guess we cannot completely get away from virtual life, as it has become a thing like money, another thing which is essential in order to have a good life.

Our generation till thought that technology would help us have more free hurs for family and a good quality of life. It has not been so and, as you say, people have less jobs and worse paid. On the other hand, due to this need to use technology, everything is outdated in a little while, filling the planet with worthless junk and making it a necessity for us to buy another gadget. I wouls think that somewhere in the middle lies a good way to do things. Not slaves of machines, but good users of them. It´s up to us: they are dumb.

Well hey, looking at the positive side. Here I am on the internet, chatting with a friend who lives hours away, writing to a friend in Chile, in contact with family that I wouldn't be in touch with if I were limited to snail mail. So that is certainly a huge plus. On the other hand, I wish my children would go outside more and just play ball or ride their bikes.

I doubt I'll be living to my planned age of 94 without modern medicine, machines included, but yeah I wish the kids socialized more.

I´d hate to go back to the caves, Dawn. Specially since I´d have to do all the recollecting and all with worrying also for the kids and the mamuths. But I also wished the kids learned to socialize a bit as we did. Group playing is out, unless mothers take them.

I think you are right about kids today are in their own little world. I have been babysitting one four year old girl and she just wants to watch tv and play on the computer and whatever else she can do for entertainment. It's not like when I was growing up where kids would play outside and entertain themselves with common household items like I did when we would visit my grandma. Now I spend so much time on the computer that I don't have time to do anything else and that is sad! Have a great weekend!!!

What do you do at your computer, Debbie? I am very much addicted to my own computer and it helps a lot now that I don´t go much out. My doctor wants me to keep away from germs as much as possible so I´m partly alone when friends or family don´t come for a visit.

Hi Marguicha Oh yes lots of youths today are not appreciating the little things from our past. Who can blame them though as everything today is created to make things a bit more convenient. Sadly that convenience imposes on the ones who had to struggle oh so much in the past. I do think that life though perhaps a bit more difficult in the past can be appreciated this day and age.

I would not want to go back to the pasty but I worry about people becoming enslaved by technology. Some human values have disappeared, some activities too. And the posibility of choosing is also out of the question: it seems that some people could not live tied to all sorts of gadgets.

I think i'm lucky to be living in a country where respect for elders is still highly regarded. Though nowadays most of the children in my country would prefer to play computer games but due to our economic situation majority of the people cannot afford this. Would you believe if i tell you that there are still places in my country that doesn't have electricity? So i guess i should consider our lack of economic stability as a blessing in disguise in preserving what used to be enjoyed by many in developed countries.

Maybe part of what you consider a problem in your country, looked from another perspective can be called a blessing.

It´s not that I´m nostalgic about the past in general, technologically speaking. What worries me is that the young people have become too depended and addicted to them and some healthy and human things have been lost. I used to sing and dance with friends as a teen, but now they are either much in the computr or hooked to their personal music. The word "share" with others is not in their vocabulary to much.. I am very happy now with a student movement because I feel hope not only for education, but for a sense of belonging in them.

I tend to agree with you on this. Our lives are more and more ruled by the machines that surround us. Thanks to sites like myLot and Facebook, how many of us know people living half a world away better than those that live right next door? The only time we see our neighbors is if there's a power outage. It's the only time when people don't know what to do with themselves, because nothing works.

You ar right. I know mylotters way better than I know most of my neighbors. It´s a shame, but it seems that people don´t want to contact other human beings the way it was done before.

the second renaissance - the real reason why machines in matrix exist, because of US.
Hello Marguicha, I was born and raised at a time where internet wasn't around just yet. those times we could still enjoy our surroundings and be able to see nature and hang out with different people. I usually go walking and stay in the mall for a couple of hours just to get some good and decent air-condition while i stumble on some anime musics that i used to like and buy Nobody seems to care really what's in the world outside. If internet shutsdown the current generation will have trouble getting to know people. i believe technology has made life convenient but made people a lot more lazy than before. I think the current generation doesn't know what their missing. btw there's another movie that can relate as to machines taking over. Not a referral link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exEO94Nflng

If there is one thing I think technology did was to make the world and relations a little bit impersonal but more convenient, simple things like dropping by a friend's house to say hello, sending a greeting or get well card, family shopping instead of buying online etc...In a way it has advantages and disadvantages, technology might have made the world more impersonal but it has also made it more far reaching and convenient. Guess things and events have a way of balancing itself

Yound and old ideas is not the same. The elderly experience more bearish on a lot of things. Young people go through life baptism. Later they will understand.

Yes, I totally agree to the fact the we are slaves in hands of machines. a vey simple practical proof is of computers, we can hardly think of doing anything without involving computers these day. without computers we cannot even think of getting things done. and in result we have become lazy and dependent. Now a days no one can claim that they are not slaves. We all are slaves of machines

It is a pity. A good use of technology and machines help lead a better life. Anything that turns us into slaves don´t. And it´s a shame that we have let dumb machines be our bosses.
