They do need a photo period. Usually 8 to 10 hours. Ambient light is not enough. Sunlight is the wrong spectrum and will stimulate algae growth. A daylight bulb is usually good enough for freshwater fish. When you say the light broke, do you know what went wrong? Did the ballast fail? Did the bulb burn out? Did the socket for the bulb fail? You may be able to find a retro fit kit at an online aquarium lighting store. Hellolights.com, championlighting.com etc. You may also be able to contact the manufacturer and see if there is a new model that will fit your current aquarium. Do you have a standard sized aquarium or was it one of those kit jobs that has a specially fitted canopy & lighting combo?

hello Lillian Pearl thanks for your information even though its too late to mention it. recently i did tried my luck in pet store but the make and model of that aquarium has been discontinued. Acc. to the information given by the staff there i shud get daylight bulb like you said with similar watt. i manage to get it from diy store but it was no luck as the fault was in whole device. i think i need to take it to some electrician. thanks again for the info. cheers

Also at night, while they don't "need" light. I can be beneficial to have LED moonlights. We use tiny ones from Digital Aquatics. In marine fish, this spectrum actually stimulates spawning in captivity. Especially when you have it on a lunar schedule in conjuction with nature. You never want to leave an aquarium light on 24/7. Fish need rest too. Not to mention, it stimulates algae growth.

One problem I see is you feed the fish at night, so you really can't see if all of your fish are eating without light. I would suggest getting a new light maybe you can get a new cover with a light. You might for now try feeding during the day, so you can be sure all of the fish are eating. I can't tell from your post, if you have only one fish.

Fish do not need the light at dark. It is no problem for them. Try to imagine the fish in the ocean and river, they all can swim in the darkness without any problems. But I will have a light in my aquarium and it is on all the time. It makes the aquarium much more beautiful. I love China

If they have enough light during the day, then I think they don't need artificial night at night.

Hello s2daj_genx :) I don't have an aquarium and fishes but I love to have one (if only my mother would allow it). That also made me think for a while. But I think they don't need the light. I think the light's purpose is for their owners to be able to see them easily even on the dark. I don't think fishes in the deep ocean are used to having light, don't you think? LOL!

Hello ThrillerAssassin its a point to be noted but ocean is very big and they have natural source of light inside (i think!) you shud have an aquarium, its so peaceful to watch fish play around, start with small size n cold water fish. they r easy to maintain.

I doubt they do. Maybe some do and some don't, because I had some fish in a bowl and they didn't have light, and they lived :D Although one of the fish lived for 3 more months without light and food.. xD
