Burning Protest

Yesterday, I saw the documentary film about a Buddhist monk set himself on fire by pouring kerosine on his body and lit the fire last year to protest against the corrupt regime in Burma or even the ruling elite in Thailand to bring awareness to his fellow men and women in the country on the despicable national policy that put the masses in a perpetual poverty. It is just shocking and incomprehensible that someone will set himself on fire until he is burned into charcoal as a way to demonstrate his displeasure on the government or regime as an acceptable way to protest. So what is your view on head of monk that set himself ablaze in public street to convey a political message in Thailand, do you consider it as insane, extreme act or merely courageous self sacrifices, or purely as mystical mind at work, or whatever it is in yuor view. Tell me what's the first impression you get seeing such an act unfold in front of your eye; Shocking, appalled, frozen, disbelieving, or what?? You are free to express your view on this.

Insane, courageous, shocking, all those things... I do hope they get that regime out of there. I know it will happen eventually, they've been in power far too long.

I do hope so too. No man should be in power for such a long time. He is replaceable just like everyone else.

Hi lampar, I have not heard of this but one of the inspiring stories to come out of the protests against the war in Vietnam was the same. Many people considered the monk a hero. I can understand why many westerners would consider it to be shocking though as they do not understand his faith. Blessings.

That is correct, his faith is the primary motivator of his action, his mental stage is not of this earthly world but another. But that is a horrible way to send a message or make a point, only one who is of high spirituality that is void of earthy needs and emotion.

I think most of the people would say that this act was insane. I don't think so that this made any difference to politicians or even to the world. And this is just said that people in desperation have to do such horrible thing to them self just to send the massage to the world that something wrong is happening in their country.

Well, it's supposed to be a wake up call, not only to the Government but to the people who have become numb with the harsh situation they are in. They are martyrs and should inspire others to fight for their rights.

Yes, it sure look like it is a genuine work of a martyrs that intend to inspire other to fight on for their rights to live and to earn for survival. It sure take plenty of courages to set one self on fire to sustain the burning sensation and pain.
