Would you resort into buying/downloading a pirated version of anything if you there is no way acquiring it legally? Like in some countries, some very hard to find games are unavailable and online purchasing is not an option?

Piracy is a crime and if you are not able to get legal copies of a particular game you always have the option of purchasing it online. They can certainly send across a link for download with a key to activate. I try to avoid purchasing pirated stuff. However the only software I have ever needed was Windows. I anyway do not play any games. Also my laptop came pre-loaded with Windows so I never had to purchase it.

RamRes is right. That is why some people are buying laptop/netbook with no OS so it would be cheaper.

No, we don't ALWAYS have an option to purchase it online.. Specially games for Wii, PSP, NDS, PS3 etc..

Technically, when a laptop comes with Windows preloaded the price for its license is included in the price of the hardware, weather you like it or not you will pay for that copy of Windows. So really, you've purchased it.

Honestly I would! Im no angel and free is better than spending lots of money. But I put a limitation to it. I don't download movies that I think are worth watching on the big screen. But when it comes to games especially on my son's iPad I would never spend a single centavo as i consider games a waste of money. So his iPad is jail broken and he downloads through installous for free!

I feel the same about watching movies in the big screen! But I can't tell you about other things we can freely download...

I wouldn't because I don't want my internet turned off. Just because the game isn't available, doesn't mean it isn't copy written in your area.

ISPs track what you download and can shut off your internet if you download anything that is copy written (this is in accordance the DCMA you agree to when you sign up). Usually with the first offense they do a temporary shut off where you have to call and get the service reactivated or send you an email warning. Happened to my husband and I a few years ago when he downloaded a game that was only available overseas, but happened to be copy written in the US as well. Here is some more information on it http://ask-leo.com/how_can_my_isp_tell_that_im_downloading_copyrighted_files.html http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10437176-93.html http://www.musicrow.com/2011/07/rights-holders-team-with-isps-to-fight-piracy/ http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100924/14433211160/us-isp-suddenlink-claims-the-dmca-requires-they-disconnect-users.shtml

I only buy original copies when it comes to my favorite movies, software and games that I'd like to install in my computer. But most of the time, Torrent knows how thankful I am that it has been invented because I usually download songs, films, other softwares, tv programs and etc through it. And whenever there are times where budget is so tight and you know you can get them free on the internet - I usually resort to downloading.

Hi damned, I actually download most of my stuff through torrents which is piracy. I wouldn't say those things aren't available in our market. But the softwares are so costly and I hardly have enough money to go with. So, whatever I need, I search it in the torrents, be it softwares or movies, and download them.

Actually, the only time I go "shhh" is when I download something original from the Microsoft website.

Yeah, I mostly download really expensive software like photoshop, antivirus, latest games, etc from Torrentz! It is almost pointless to buy a software while another person can download it for free! And, I don't remember the last time I downloaded something from microsoft website.... :) :) :)

Why pay for something that you can get for free. It may not be the best advice but I think a lot of people go with the idea. There are softwares that are readily available for free so you can take advantage of it. But I don't recommend piracy.

damned_dle, I have to really ask that you reconsider getting pirated version of any programs, music or games. I am not sure if you are aware, but software companies are coming up with new ways to protect their intellectual properties from any piracy abuse. Also, anti piracy agencies are getting more aggressive with their work and does not spare even private individual users. In case, you think that you can get away without being caught, I would suggest that you update yourself because your local internet service providers are also being roped in to locate these abusers.

damned_dle, Let me not scare you, but please do your homework to check what your country is going to do with regards to piracy violations. As in most cases, jail is not the main advocate but do expect a hefty fine according to the merits of the material. Also, BCA the main agency is putting out rewards for successful informants to corporate piracy no less than half a million dollars and do your maths what it would cost the company at fault. I remember some individuals being slapped with a 6 figure fine in my country over the years and I would expect your country to have similar code of law. So, be warned here.

Not here in my country! If they will imprison everyone who downloads illegally here, then half (or even more) of the population who uses the internet might get jailed.

There is no excuse nor legitimate reason to break the law weather it be on or offline. Personally if I couldn't find a legal and legit copy of something then I'm not meant to have it. Sneaking around the law isn't exactly a very smart or wise move to be making. It may take time, but you will eventually get caught and the longer it takes the harder it will be. So my advise to you, wait it out. A legal copy of the software/game/ whatever you're looking for may make a return. When (and if) it does that'd be the time to buy it.

There are many torrents on the internet that you can get free downloads from. I believe most people do that anyway. After all, not everyone has the money to buy those expensive things, like software. So, if you can get it free, why not.

I very often download software for free. I may not recommend it, but I do it to improve the quality of videos I put on YouTube. I've downloaded Photoshop, Screenflow and Final Cut Pro for free. Most of the videos involving any of the 3 have over a thousand views. Not the best advice you will ever hear, but do it if you need it.

I do not recommend downloading online but to tell you honestly, I sometimes do this. The sad part about this is that this is rampant is most countries and some people are actually using this to make money.

I hope you are right, we will buy/download pirated copies of software or games etc if it is not available. If you take most of the cases normally most of them buy pirated why ? It is because you have pay only 10% of the legit copies. So which will you prefer legit or pirated ?

Actually it is ZERO % because you can download everything for free.. ( I didn't say that! )

I prefer original versions if only they aren't so expensive. If the companies would lower their prices, I guess people would opt to buy the original and stop piracy that way. I always buy original antivirus software and OS. For the others, I download them for free.
