This is sorta an update to my last discussion and, if I don't get right back to your comments, it means I'm probably in the hospital and will answer asap. My nose swelled up last week, on one side and it hurt! I went to an ENT doctor who diagnosed it as a staph infection and put me on an aggressive antibiotic treatment plan. Well, those antibiotics are making me very sick. Nausea, vomiting, blech! Oh, and it also comes with a massive headache. I called the doc on Friday and was told to stop the antibiotics for 24 hours, then resume, plus buy some probiotics at a pharmacy. I'm like, "HUH????" Okay, it didn't sound right to me but she's the doc so I did as I was told. Friday night I developed a fever, which I was fortunate enough not to have before then. It spiked at 101.5F (Saturday morning) then began to come down once I resumed the antibiotics. BUT, the nausea and vomiting came right back. As I'm typing this, my temperature is 100.0F (normal for me is 97.4) and I've decided that I am NOT taking any more of these @!%*#!~!!! pills! Of course, that means that my fever will probably go up again and do it pretty quickly. So, I may just have to go to the hospital if that stupid doctor won't switch antibiotics to something that won't make me so nauseous or at least give me something to control the nausea. That's not asking too much, is it? GEEZ! Has anyone here gotten really sick from a staph infection? If so, do you remember what antibiotic you were given? I'd kinda like to throw some names out there if I do have to go to the hospital. Sorry for this being so long. It's part rant, part reaching out for help.

dear mentalward that sounds awful and I hope you are much better by now. Maybe you should look for a better doctor as yours doesnt seem to be a good one from what I read here.

Hi RS. Thank you, I am feeling better now although my energy level is not yet back to normal. Still, it's getting better every day. My doctor did change the antibiotics to ones I could tolerate and they seem to have done the trick. I take the last one tomorrow and I'm so very glad to be done with all this! I've never had a staph infection before and I sure hope I never get another one. Geez, they are nasty! Oh, you are right about me finding a better doctor. This is one I had never seen before and intend to never see again. If I ever need another ear, nose and throat doctor, I'm going to ask around to find one who is recommended instead of just opening the phone book.

I got a similar infection in my nose earlier this year and I was prescribed antibiotics too but I didn’t have the reaction you did luckily for me! Mine was a staph infection also but I don’t remember the type of meds I was given as this happened earlier in the year. My nose was extremely painful but once the antibiotics kicked in I began to feel much better unlike you poor thing! You don’t need the fever and vomiting that’s for sure; please go back to the doctor as soon as possible as this can be very serious! Good luck!

Thanks, Paula. I was finally given a different antibiotic that didn't make me sick and has, hopefully, gotten rid of the infection. I saw the doc again on Friday for a checkup and was told that the infection wasn't gone yet but was MUCH better. I take my last antibiotic tonight and I'm pretty sure the infection is gone. Yippee!!! My energy level isn't up to normal yet but it gets better every day. Do you remember how long it took you to get back to normal?

The infection itself cleared up within days because the antibiotics I was taking were quite strong. I did feel run down for a week or two afterwards which the doctor told me was an after effect of antibiotics and the loss of vitamins they can cause.Hope you are feeling better every day...

Never happened to me before, and I hope it never does. The whole experience sounds like absolute hell to me.

Oh geez, sounds like the treatment is worse than the condition. But you do have to get rid of that infection. Bleah, did he switch your antibiotics?

Yep, I was put on different antibiotics and they seem to have worked. They didn't make me sick and the fever is gone. I saw the doc for a checkup and was told I still had a bit of the infection left and to just continue with the antibiotics. I take the last one tomorrow and am feeling much better, although my energy level is not back to normal yet. Still, it gets better every day so I'm happy. I'll definitely see another ENT doc if I ever need one!

Hi lipstick. I think I am over the infection now. My doctor finally did change the antibiotics to ones that I could tolerate. I take the last one tonight and feel much better. I understand rhinitis and can sympathize with you. I've had sinus infections most of my life. I thought this was one at first only with this strange new symptom of my nose hurting and swelling. That would have been much easier to deal with. From what I have read and heard, staph infections can happen to anyone as most of us have this bacteria on or in our bodies all the time but, normally, our bodies can keep the bacteria from getting out of control. It's only if we have weakened immune systems that this staph bacteria can get out of control. I've been under some stress lately and I think that's what caused this infection to get so bad in me.

Hi Mental Ward. So sorry that you are sick. Sometimes they do cause stomach upsets. It's good to take probiotics when you take ABTs so that you replenish the good germs. ABTs tend to kill off the good and the bad bacteria. A temp isn't bad either. It's your immune system working. As long as your temp is below 101 I wouldn't worry about it too much. Tour immune system is being stimulated. I think your doc should change your ABT though so you won't feel sick.

Staph infection can get worse very quickly. I would go to the hospital or at least call the pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist. Your fever spiking like that is not good. My son had a staph infection when he had surgery. It is not something to play around with.

I sure hope you get better and soon. Any infection is bad but when your doctor won't give you something to counteract the stuff the medicine is doing to you that's bad too. She/he can give you phenagren for the nausea. I have no idea what to suggest for the infection though. There are just too many antibiotics out there. Good luck... I'd call the doc and tell them to change the medicine and change it now.

I've had a staph infection once and that was scarey enough. The meds I was put on after it was confirmed to be staph were quite heavy duty. I wonder though are you able to see the entry point? because mine was like a boil/zit on that spot between my chin and cheek. My Dr had me in everyday for a week nearly trying to get at the core wich went half way up my face. Talk about not fun, but the result of letting it go would of been much worse KWIM? I only discovered mine because I thought it was a zit and it got 500x bigger in a matter of hours from trying to pop it. I'd never known a zit to do that ya know... GL to you! I hope you are well soon. I think you should be given something for the nausia w/o a doubt as that would make this whole thing alot easier to deal with.

I'm sure I've had a staph infection but don't really remember. My kids have had them when they were growing up, though. One thing about docs is they think they know your body better than you do. After a few bad experiences I learned to find docs who will listen to me. For instance, I know amoxicillin doesn't work for me and I'll refuse it and ask for something else. I knew that my kids needed a strong antibiotic other than that, too, and had my doc trained not even to bother with it. You need to tell your doc to listen to you or you'll fire her. She might not give a damn but if she doesn't you'll know you've been wasting your time with her. Stand up for yourself and get the best treatment available. Maybe your body doesn't react well with those meds.

Do check everything online (Medline is a good source) to learn more. No doctor should prescribe ANY antiotic by phone. Th doctr shoud SEE the patient so that he knows exactly what kind of ailment he has and should ask him other questions to see if he´s allergic to some of the antibiotics around.Sometimes the doctor has to make a culture of your infection because some germs are resistant to many antibiotics and the only thing you´ll get by takeing them is to lower your deefenses and make them more agresive.

Go to the hospital and demand your right for an appropriate treatment for your infection. You need to well to be able to be sick to stand your right for the treatment you should have to get well. I've had infections and I have been furious before I got it right. But I stood my point to have what I had a right to have.

Dear /M', all these doctors are butchers. They don't treat but earn money. You better consult some Homoeopath around. Your fever is due to infection. Had I been by your bedside, I would have cured you by my touches only.
