Series that go on longer than they really need to.

So I moved here to the Philippines in June and started getting used to the way the television series work around here. From what I have noticed the main shows here last a season. That season maybe long or short from what I noticed as well. The biggest difference I noticed from the states though, is that there is a new episode every evening during the week. These shows can easily run 100 or more episodes because of this. Since I learned this I started thinking about it. Why do shows in the states carry on for 5 to 10 years? That really drags them out and gets stale as you continue watching. I think if the U.S.A. followed that example then a lot more of the shows that get pitched and never are seen would be because there would actually be space for them not being hoarded by the 32nd version of Law and Order in it's 8th season. Now that is an exaggeration of course, but not by much really ;). I am aware also that although in England the have shows, to me it seems it is shorter as far as I have noticed so correct me if I am wrong. The difference I notice there though is that each season is called a series. Misfits being my prime example for that, which on a side note is a wonderful show everyone should see. What are all of your guys' experiences with television series and how they run them? Do you think the way they go in The Philippines would be a good idea worldwide? I actually do very much so. Please leave your comments and thoughts here and enjoy your day.

This isn't the case before in the Philippines. We used to drag our tv series for years like 6-10 years and you could practically see the movie stars age in the series as they never changed the lead characters at all. This started to changed when foreign tv novelas or tv series were introduced into the country. The Mexican series was fast paced and concluded only in a few months time and so was the Korean and the Filipinos started to enjoy watching those more than our very own because of the slow pacing. Thus the change. And i like it that way. But i enjoy American series like Desperate Housewives that are longer and have more interesting stories. I don't even watched our own series at all.

Ahh I see I see. America needs to do that too. As far as American series go, I really enjoy House and then it goes to series based on superpowered people.

I think its the soap operas that could go on and on and on and on as long as there are people watching it. TV series have seasons and most do stop airing when they are not commissioned anymore. For example, the US TV series Southland. First, it was commissioned by NBC, then as they filming the second season, NBC dropped it from its roster thus making the series 'floating'. But TNT bought its rights and now the series is airing on TNT. In UK, its a different approach. Their tv series are like movie type shooting. One episode is like a movie on itself. Am I right? I have to say, I also like Misfits.

I think five years is about the average length of a good series. It depends ofcourse how many characters are in it and how good the writers are. Take Fraiser for instance. It went on for about seven years or so. It had a lot of good writers. Christopher Lloyd for one who was the guy in Back to the Future Great writer. So it really depends. If the writers are lousy taking a series longer than four or five years is excruciating.

Well you see, here in the UK we would have a series yes. For example, Shameless is back on Monday.. it sort of runs for 3 months, off for 3 months, on for 3 months, then off again.. And it only shows once a week.. so it doesn’t get stale and boring, you look forward to it every week, and then there is a build up for it when it’s away. Even American tv series’.. like one tree hill. We only see one episode a week, so it lasts longer too.. so I think that’s quite good. Then we have our soap operas. We have two main ones, Eastenders and Coronation street. Both are shown on a Monday at different times on different stations. Just Eastenders on Tuesday. Cornonation Street on Wed. Both on Thursday, and both on Friday. But that little gap in the middle, and the weekend break keeps it fresh too :)
