Is taking vitamins everyday necessary?

August 30, 2011 1:39am CST
Hi friends:) My mother got angry with me for not taking my vitamins, I really don't like taking any of them or medicine unless they are chewable, and I don't think that I need it because I eat plenty of veggies and fruits everyday, I exercise regularly and I hardly get sick. My question dear mylotters is, is it necessary?

Hello. There's no need to take any vitamins when you are in good health but normally for kids below 10 or specially toddlers, babies are required because they are prone to sickness and they need also supplement for their growth.

Hi Flowerfest! Based on what you said, that you eat plenty of greens and have a healthy lifestyle, i dont think you really need vitamin supplements everyday. However, if your environment is not supportive of health (like pollution), i believe that vitaminC can be a necessity.

hi:) yes I eat a lot of veggies and fruits, I exercise, and don't smoke... but yes we live near the city so its surely is polluted, now I'm taking multi-vitamins, vit-c and vit-e thats what my mother ask me to take, but the multi-vit is in capsule so it's so huge, and it gives me a hard time taking those. thank you for your comment friend

Vitamins is only necessary if you have deficiency of a certain nutrition, you will need supplements to fill the deficiency. People who doesn't eat vegetables needs to take vitamins and supplements. vegetarians also needs to take certain supplements because they also have nutritional deficiencies because they don't eat meat. With a balanced diet I actually think you won't need any supplements. A healthy lifestyle won't make any supplements unless you will have certain deficiencies.

Viatmins is a luxury to me,main food is always my first priority.I think we can almost get any kind of vitamins in veggies and fruits. So I think there's nearlly no necessity to take vitamins on purpose.Only if your body fail to take the vitamins from fruits and vegetables then you have to take some vitamins pills to strengthen it.or your doctor says your body has deficiency of a certain nutrition.then you have the necessity .

hi:) yeah you're both right, if you can't get the enough nutrients on food then perhaps taking vitamins would help, but if you had enough nutrients from food then I think its alright to skip those. no I don't have nutrients deficiency, but my mom is really concern about our health that's the reason why shes asking us to take vitamins everyday, which I don't like coz I'm having problem in taking those. thank you for your comment friend:)

Well everyone needs their 5 a day. Fruit and/or veg. I know some people that take it very literally and will eat 5 types of fruit a day, or 5 types of veg, and even some people that will eat both. Vitamins can be found in other foods we eat, not only fruit and veg, but fruit and vegetables are the only way we know exactly what vitamins we are getting, and the amount. It is important for our skin, hair, teeth, sight, everything, that we get enough vitamins! So even if you are eating plenty of fruit and veg, it really wouldn’t hurt just to take a wee vitamin in the mornings! :)

yes it is necessary.there are times when we can't get enough of them from the foods that we eat since we cooked veggies and most vitamins were lost. you should consider yourself lucky for having a mom like her.not all moms provide vitamins to their kids. that's a luxury for others since they prioritize main foods than vitamins. According to Cornell University, over 40 percent of adults take vitamins, even though they may not need them. The average healthy individual who eats a wide variety of foods should have no trouble getting their recommended daily intake of vitamins. Still, there are nearly a dozen vitamins and minerals that most people are slightly deficient in. For these people, and many others, including professional athletes and people with certain health conditions, there are many advantages to taking vitamins.

No, taking supplemental vitamins is not always necessary. Do you eat meat and/or dairy products? It is difficult to get all the nutrients you need if you eat neither.

If you eat well and you are healthy I don't think vitamins are necessary...I take vitamin D every day because I need it and vitamin C but that is because of my age my doctor recommended it! but other wise I don't think is necessary.

I still think you should take them, but maybe see what your doctor thinks. The way we eat today, most people don't get all the vitamins they need from food. I also heard that chewable vitamins aren't as good as the kind you swallow. I don't know if that is true or not.

I have read in the newspaper that taking food supplements like vitamins can actually cause other internal organs to malfunction. I cannot explain it fluently but according to the health news, when one is supplementing on vitamin E, the other parts of the body may be affected causing it not to function properly. It is better to take the vitamins from the food we eat on a balance diet. Supplements can actually destroy the balance in our body.

Vitamins are the basic thing to keep our body healthy. Lack of vitamins will result in serious problems such as loss of hair, being anaaemic, skin problems and so many other. I would prefer eating vegetable & Fruits rather than eating Vitamin Tablets.

I think it's still necessary to take vitamins especially medicines when you're sick. It helps our body to stay strong and supply vitamins that vegetables and fruits won't give us on a certain day.

I take some vitamins now, but didn't take any when I was younger. The body doesn't work quite as well as we get older and vitamins can help. There are lots of articles on line about vitamin D that we get from the sun for instance. Because here in the UK we have longer winters and less sun, I always make sure I get a dose of vitamin D to help against winter colds and 'flu rather than take the flu jab. So far it has worked very well and research states that people who don't get sun are deficient in this vitamin. Note though, that is's always best to consult your doctor before taking any vitamins, and if you are healthy without them, then don't worry to much about taking them. _Derek

if it is a question of necessity among vitamins, the first that i will choose is vitamin C supplement. and if it is available, i'll take the alkaline based vitamin C and not the acidic base. it's because i am acidic and i get tummy troubles when i take the usual acid based vitamin C.

Although vitamins are important for us. However, I don't agree to take the vitamin pills everyday. After all, it is a kind of medicine and it will have some side effects. I prefer to obtain the vitamin from the natural food. This is the best way. I love China

Well I don't think it's a must. I mean I see people who eat so many vitamins in a day and that really surprises me. I think it being unhealthy if that much dose is taken, but i may be wrong. Anyway I had this huge box of vitamins that I had to eat three times a day for about 6 months. Goshh it was like a task for me and I kept forgetting about them. Soon I completely stopped eating them and after a year later I got reminded of them again and when I went to check the date had expired

It depends on your lifestyle I think. If you are healthy and you don't need it, and your doctor also advised you that, then I think you are safe without them. For me and my husband, both of us are active within the day and we try to spend time together staying up late at night talking or enjoying a movie. We do drink vitamins, especially him. He does not like vegetables that much and in order to fill in the vitamins not taken on a meal, I give him vitamins. I also take a kind of vitamin c everyday and multivitamins every two days to make sure I am safe and resistant to sickness.
