I really don't know what is the reason behind it. My mum also sleeps like that and from small I always questioned her about that and she said she don't know it until I told her I seen her in bed sleeping like that. As for me, I close both my eyes completely when I sleep.

I don't think I sleep with my eyelids open or partially open, but how would I know. My family all keep their eyes closed completely while sleeping though. I would think if your eyes were open or partially open that you wouldn't be getting full rest. Also, I would think that you would wake up with really dry eyes. Maybe that is why some people wake up and their eyes are bloodshot and dried. Thanks for an interesting discussion and have a great day! Happy myLotting!!!

Hmm,i actually don't know the scientific reason behind this.I too saw people sleeping with their eyelids open. It's very hard to find out whether they're sleeping or not.I just thought that they're thinking deeply about something.Whew!I mean, eyes needs rest, right?Does it happen in this case?Do eyes get rest even when they are open?Or Do they keep seeing even in sleep?

What an odd niece you have. I have no idea as to the scientific truth behind this curiosity, never was aware of it except in cartoons where they have convenient books guiding people to sleep with their eyes open, though I guess it's possible to give such an illusion by painting an extra pair of eyes on your eyelids, and that'd probably require the fullest of artistic talent from the painter's part.

I don't guess anyone knows. I've read about this and people say its from a sleep disorder and some others say its a type of muscle weakness in the face. Sleep walkers will sometimes have their eyes and therefore appear to be awake while they are doing things, but they are really asleep. It is very possibly to sleep with your eyes open. Its just not good for your eyes as the lids are meant to protect and people with this problem often have very dry eyes.

I sleep with my eyelids half open.I think it runs in my family. From my mother's side almost 25 % members have this habit. Don't know whether this habit is hereditary. I i dont think it is a problem unless it disturbs you in some way. I never know I that I sleep with my eyelids open. Just people tell me abut that. So need worry about this habit.

Rabbits sleep that way.It may weeken eyesight. And is not that safe also.Eyelids protect the eyes ,so should see a doctor regarding this habit and get rid of it early so that in future it does not become a problem.

Yes, I have observed that too with one of my nephew. He sleeps with his eyelid half close.I thought when I first saw it he was just kidding pretending to be sleeping but his parents told me that he is asleep already. I don't recall if there is a scientific explanation why some sleep with their eyelids half close.

It's really odd, you know to see some people sleeping like that.Maybe there is a medical term for it. I'll try to search it and report back if I found something.

I read about that and it is a disorder. It is called nocturnal lagophthalmos. When your eyelids do not fully close, your eyes are exposed to the open atmosphere. Because they function to lubricate the surface of your eyes, your eyes begin to dry out significantly. In very young patients, nocturnal lagophthalmos tends to be less severe than in older patients and is usually outgrown. The disorder can also occur during the day. Patients with this condition do not have a full blink, so there is always a part of the eye that does not receive enough tear lubrication.

I don't think my dear friend that I sleep with eyelids open. Since I am asleep I can't tell if I am or not. But I am sure that if I did my boyfriend would have said something because it is kind of scary to see someone who does. My daughter sleeps with one eyelid half open and the other closed. People in my culture say that those who do sleep like my daughter is that they are not very trusting. It is like they have to keep one eye open to see what is in their surroundings. Hmm I am not sure if so, but this is what I was told. I do know that my daughter is very trusting with others, and sometimes too much. lol

It's because she must have a huge bulging eyes. The outer eye skin covering won't be able to cover all the eye balls while sleeping thus it's partially open. My cousin who has huge bulging eyes also sleep like this and at first i also wondered, but soon i noticed that my friends who have same eye size would sleep like this as well. It's normal.
