Sleeping in fact has a number of connotations. While an afternoon nap of say 10 to 15 minutes provide a minimal rest during a hectic day's schedule of work Sleep for hours together satisfy the needs of the body to rest and relax fully. On the other hand Deep slumber makes one unaware of things and totally oblivious of present events. SLEEP is inevitable for the relaxation of the mind and the body. But too much of it (deep slumber) would make a person lethargic and rundown. Hence SLEEP is at once essential as well as detrimental to one. So take sleep as a mode of relaxation rather than an escape route to unmindfulness.

See, for me, I feel like when I sleep, but I don't sleep deeply I feel lethargic on the following day. However, when I sleep deeply during the night, I feel like I have a lot more energy the following day. I am also a person that is not able to take short naps because doing that makes me feel completely worn down for the rest of the day. Of course, that is just how it works for me.

Healthy sleep has three stages and for the most benefit your body and mind needs to go through all three. Deep Sleep is one of these. Sleep that is used to avoid problems is not healthfull and should be avoided. Problems need to be dealth with and if one cannot do this on his own, professional help should be sought.

awww...what you are saying now is contrary to how i feel when i manage to get naps and deep sleep. i hardly take naps, i prefer to have a good sleep. always, naps give me the body aches and pains upon waking up. whereas, deep good sleep makes me feel well rested and so relaxed upon waking up. ah, maybe i have never had an experience of having overslept yet. in this case, i should be thankful. it will never do anyone any good at all to be feeling lethargic and rundown at any point in one's life.

That is an interesting analysis of sleep and the different forms it is likely to take. Sometimes you wake up from sleep refreshed other times you wake up from sleep completely tired.

sukumar794, Like all aspects and things of life, there will always be adverse and unfavorable effects when we do not exercise moderation. Most problems of today whether it be health or environment are all dire consequences of our inability to control and moderate. Starting with excessive and careless eating habits has brought about health problems that comes with obesity. Likewise, sleeping could be therapeutic but when we sleep over the limit, we will be bringing about health problems for ourselves. “Moderation, which consists in an indifference about little things, and in a prudent and well-proportioned zeal about things of importance, can proceed from nothing but true knowledge, which has its foundation in self-acquaintance.” - Plato

Good point. I am not one for napping during the day and I admit that I don’t get as much sleep as I need because I am so busy living my life. I do know people who have made sleep their hobby and will nap at any opportunity they can get. To me it seems that for some deep slumber is like an escape.

I used to force myself to stay awake and work many hours or devote my sleep time to my daughter when she was still living at home. I still work alot but try to get more rest since she moved out now.

if you don't get that deep sleep then you don't get the good REM sleep and have dreams, and dreams are what keeps the human sane, people who don't get enough dreaming do go crazy... at least until they get caught up on deep sleep and dreaming

Every time I go to sleep, I am hoping for new lesson to be shared by nature during my sleeping time. I mean, a great space for energizing!.
