do you reuse the bottle of mineral bottled water?

September 5, 2011 10:19am CST
hi mylotters:) I'm just wondering how many of you are like me that are refilling the mineral water bottle, I am referring to the store bought bottled water, such as viva or those who don't know viva perhaps you know evian:D Is it safe to refill these types of bottles? and if so, how many times before they start to break down and jeopardise the quality of your drink?

Yes, I am not ashamed to admit that I reuse plastic bottles. I have been doing it for sometime and I have yet to see the harmful effect(s). In my mind, I am doing the right thing for the environment. Instead of throwing away the bottle after use, I reuse it for at least 2/3 times. When I go out and have to buy a bottle, I take the bottle home and refill it.

hi:) I do the same I used it twice or thrice a week so I don't need to buy bottled water at school, it can save me much though:D I think it's not really unhygienic thesids as long as you wash it first before you refill it again:) thank you for your comment friends

thesids , oh...you will never be alone when it comes to frugal living. Been there, done that, got the t-shirts, etc flowerfest, I agree with you completely. I don't see anything unhygienic in it. The bottling company writes that it can have harmful effects. Surely the waste plastic has done more harm then refilling the bottle? As you said, as long as it is washed properly, I see no harm. We help in reducing plastic wastage as well.

Personally speaking, I often reuse the bottle of mineral water after I drink it off. Every night before I go to sleep, I usually refill an empty bottle with cold boiled water and put it on the table besides the bed. Then I could drink it very conveniently as I wish. Certainly I know that I'd better not use a bottle for a long time for it may be contaminated, so I usually replace by a new one once a week averagely.

I keep a bottle of water next to me at night. I have to take a thyroid pill with water on an empty stomach every morning so it's really convenient to remember. I also just that read drinking a glass of water first thing every morning is very healthy, so I am extra happy I have this routine.

I admit I do re-use them sometimes and stick in tap water, but I'll only do that once with those kinds of bottles. The one thing I won't do is refill them if they've been sitting in the sun. I read an article that says more of the plastic is leached out of that type of plastic bottle when they get warm/hot, so that it makes it not safe. Since petroleum is used to make those plastic bottles, I think it makes a lot of sense not to take the risk of re-using them like that. I know if mine sits in the car on a hot day, you can definitely taste something different about the water. The newer bottles, I believe, break down sooner than say a soft drink plastic bottle. I feel better about using them and then putting them in a plastic recycler instead. That way I don't ingest any petroleum by-products, and it gets recycled and stays out of the landfills (where they can potentially pollute the ground water system.)

Hi flowerfest trust me, reading this I felt I am not the only - most unhygenic guy around(my wife calls me that) - when I keep the empty bottle of Aquafina or Kinley (these are the Mineral Water Bottling companies from Coca Cola and Pepsico here at my Country). I know the medics say that using plastic for storing drinking water is quite unhealthy but I cant help it as these are cheaper and also come with a litre of drinking water. Normally I replace these bottles with newer ones every 45 days. The glass bottles are to heavy and also fragile... and I have a bad habit of breaking them as many a times they slip off my grip

hi:) hehe yes I also do that to save my allowance for buying drinks, but I only used it twice or max of thrice then I already discard it, I haven't done using it for 45 days, but why not? hehe perhaps I can save more if I do that:D I think it's not unhygienic as long as you wash it before you refill it again. thanks for your comment friend

I always bring bottled water with me and when I finish drinking it, I just refill the bottle with the water from the faucet. That is when I am still in school and when I arrive home I pour the rest of the water out and throw the bottle. I think you can also use it thrice and then the plastic will start to deteriorate. I don't really know but I don't want to risk it.

Empty bottles of mineral waters should never be reused, it is not safe. I just forgot on how to determine on the kind of plastic that are reusable, you can see it at the bottom of the bottle, the number of recycle thing. I would share it if I will be able to ask it again. This is the only thing I can say, never reused it. I am also reusing that before, but when I got to know that it is not safe for my health, I stop reusing it.

They can be reused. But, I return those bottles to the bottle depots in my community, and get the deposit money back. I have to pay the deposit for the bottles at the time of purchaing the water. So, by returning the bottles, I get back the deposit. The quality of the bottles are very good, any way.

I always reuse the bottle that is after I have finished drinking it. I refill it from the tap. But someone said quite recently on TV that that is not safe. But I still do refill the bottle though I guess I do not take heed to the warning about the bottle being unsafe.

Hey flower, I try my best to drink as much as water as I can. When I do buy bottle of water a whole 24-16 pack or what ever. I make sure. When I get done drinking them I refill it back up with water again for later in the future. I don't think the water taste much different taste pretty much the same to me lol. Eventually I throw it away if lose the top or someone drink out the same bottle.. I just can't drink of some people. Find it to be nasty a little it all depends on who it is to me. But most of the time.. Nope. Im sure the water here is filter.

I try to reuse the bottle that I buy. The bottles I use however are the gallon jugs. I am not a fan of buying bottled water unless it is the gallon jug because it is cheaper, and I can consume a least one a day. But I hold on to the jugs for about a week or two before I change them out for fresher jugs. It is not hard to tell when they need to be changed because they start to reek. Or during the summer, I wouldn't trust drinking out of the jug if it has been under direct sunlight.

I don't get the question! If the water from the tap is safe to drink, why would you buy bottled water at all? Or, if you are refilling with something else other than water. what? That would make a lot of difference. I use soft drink bottles to store home made iced tea. They are much stronger than water bottles.

i think she means.. she buys bottled water, drinks it until it's finished.. then refills it with water from the tap, or maybe communial water cooler in work.. and she's asking, can the bottle only be used a few times before it starts to "spoil" ..

I am constantly refilling my bottled water with (filtered) tap water. It tastes just fine. I never thought about the plastic breaking down. If the water starts to taste bad, which takes longer than 6 months, then I will throw it out.

I reuse water bottles about 2x. My husband drinks green tea and Arizona tea in plastic bottles so I wash and reuse his bottles, once each. I store the bottles of water in the refridge and it's especially refreshing when the weather is hot. Sometimes I add a packet of flavoring to the bottle of water.

I don't know when they begin to degrade. I will use the bottles over and over again for days and then throw them out. Like I like to use Gatorade bottles over and over again. I put Crystal Light in them when the Gatorade is finished.

I often reuse the bottles that come with water or cool drink. I just give them a good wash first. Many of these bottles are very useful and it is wasteful to throw them away. Some of them have good lids that are easy to pull up and drink from whilst driving.

I know that there are certain chemicals that can leach out of bottles into the drinks that are contained within the bottles. However, I am the kind of person that will refill my bottles many, many times before I throw them away. I will throw them away when they start to get stained from putting things other than water into them or I will throw them away when I'm away from home because it doesn't make a lot of sense to carry the bottles back home with me.

I usually forget to reuse them as they get to be thrown away (not good to the environment really). However, I think one needs to wash each bottle thoroughly after drinking from it in order to be sure.

I refill these bottles all the time. I rinse them out with hot water and then refill them. I put them in the refridge to get cold. I've never had an issue doing this and I have been doing it for years. Best Wishes!

I have read in an issue of Reader's Digest that reusing plastic mineral water bottles can be harmful to our health. This is especially true with plastic mineral water bottles which are subjected to too much heat and exposed to the sun. Plastic degrades with heat even at minute amounts and can cause its components to mix with the water we are drinking. It is not advisable to reuse such bottles and also not to drink those bottled waters which are exposed greatly to heat. So, in my case, I really don't reuse such plastic bottles. I just segregate them and later, sell them to junk shops.
