In what ways do you believe you demonstrate that you are a good citizen?

How do you show that you are a good citizen of your country. What would make you say someone else is a good citizen? What kinds of things does a good citizen do? Are there things you believe a good citizen would not do? Do you think you are a good citizen in the way you define it?

Like I told rameshpk, I was a rebellious teenager and did many bad things..But that is also in my past and now I believe I am a good citizen.. How can I demonstrate this with no job and I can't get out? By helping my neighbors. I live in a gated community where there are very elaborate homes and there are very few homes that are not good, and mine is one of them..Yet since I lived here, I have had four different families to trust me to go into their home to either clean it or take care of their dog(s) and/or cat while they are not home. These people also know that I know some items in their homes are worth some money, yet I have never taken anything unless they say I can have something. So, even though I can't volunteer at the local shelter or contribute financially to the community, I have earned trust in this small area of my world..

I wish I could start my own company, then I don't have to worry about getting hired, just worry about my employee's and getting whatever service or product I sell popular enough to have a good business going..

Hi Barb! I would say that a good citizen of a country helps his countrymen to be better in life, economically, socially, and spiritually. Also, a good citizen knows how to take care of the environment because he knows that it is where he lives in as well as his other countrymen. I am not really sure if I'm a good citizen of our country because my priority is myself and my family. I do things for my own good and for my family's sake. I do help in the protection and conservation of the environment though. Of course, voting in the election is also one of the way we engage in public affairs.

I think voting in elections is one of the most important duties of a citizen, as long as one informs himself about the issues before voting instead of just hearing some TV commericials that simplify everything to make us think one candidate or the other will do more for us personally. I think taking care of yourself and your family is also what a good citizen will try to do. I think maybe citizens have different roles at different periods of their lives. During the working years and parenting years, it's important to support one's family and raise one's children to be good people and good citizens. When children and work no longer require all your time, that may leave time to volunteer to help others more and work for causes you believe in. Or one can take one's family to a trail or beach clean-up day, recycle together, or work together in a food pantry to help at soup kitchens for the homeless. That helps teach one's children to also give back to the rcommunity. Each person his own special interest and as a whole, all people working together will build up the community.

Yes, that's true. Voting should not be blind. It has to be an informed vote. What sucks here in our country is that elections has become a popularity contest. People don't research about the nominees. They just vote those who are popular. That's why many of our officials are former and currently tv and movie stars. I guess you're right. Since family is the smallest unit of our society, helping your family also means helping the society.

I am a true child of my country. I was born and breed in Malaysia and I've always been a law abiding citizen of my country. As a patriotic citizen I exercise my rights to vote in every elections to elect a responsible leader to lead my country to a greater height. Citizens who go to the streets carrying banners criticizing their leaders and the government are considered as traitors to their country as it will affect the peace of the country. They are not only undermining the government of the day but showing the world how politically unstable my country is. Not happy with the leadership every citizens should use the proper channels through the ballot boxes to overthrow the government and not by disrupting the peace of the country by staging unruly rallies shouting anti government slogans. I believe I am a good citizen of my country as I don't involve myself in political issues and will respect which ever party is in the government bench.

Some citizens in our country think they are showing their patriotism by taking to the streets. In the United States this is legal, unless it gets violent. Then the police will stop it. Many times innocent people are hurt when protests become violent. Peaceful protests where people just carry signs to express their point of view where officials will see them are lawful. I have seen many peaceful protests that do not disrupt anyone or interfere with what elected officials are doing. I have heard about violent protests, many of a racial nature, that become unruly mobs who just want revenge for something. These are not good citizens, in my opinion, and deserve what they get when the police have to come and stop them from hurting people and property.

I think a good citizen needs to know the history and culture of a nation in addition to just following the rules. Someone who is a good person in general is likely in my opinion to be a good citizen as well. I think a good citizen might well blow the whistle if the government did something egregiously wrong. A good citizen would not betray the government, though. S/he would not lie, steal, or commit violence (except maybe in self-defense) Yes, I know people do this, but I think they should not. I try to set a good example, not just of citizenship, but for humanity.

You are correct. How can you be a good citizen if you don't know anything about your country's history and government? How can you participate intelligently in that government if you don't keep informed on national and even local issues.

Sounds like you're doing what you can. It would be nice if we could do a lot more about the corrupt politicians that seem to inhabit most countries.

hi bagarad, i think its very easy to prove yourself as a bad citizen, but it takes very long time to say that you are a good citizen, it's a report for our character given by other citizens in the society

Good point. Public opinion is important, but some of the best citizens are still relatively unknown in their communites because they may not seek the limelight. Who knows all the people who volunteer at the library or the local food bank?
