my inheritance

Other than family memories the best thing I got from my Grandparents was a cookbook. My Grandfather was a writer, yes he was published, I have read a book or two of his and if he had not come from a very rich family I don't think anything of his would be published. He just wasn't that good. Butttt he and my Grandmother got together and wrote a cook book. I remember their family parties and they were always beautifully presented with wonderful food. Some of it was very difficult for a child to eat. Chicken livers and caves tongue were not winners in my book. But when I think of all the wonderful things they made, cake, like we would never make today, beef roast, and many other tasty items I can almost taste them. But the best part of the book was my Grandfather wrote a little story about each receipe, who it came from and how it came about being made. This is a wonderful treasure for me.

That sounds wonderful! I have a friend who has a cookbook from her grandmother who is no longer here . . . and now my friend can pass on delicious family Polish recipes to her own kids. Tradition means so much to her, so she treasures this cookbook too. It was never published though, but you know, it's the content that counts. My family never really had (or thought of) heirlooms of any sort to pass on to generations ahead. We barely even have photographs. But I am starting a cookbook of my recipes (at least the things we eat in this house) for my kids - so they can have the taste of home when they grow up and we're no longer around. Maybe one day it will be treasured too. What is caves tongue? I don't know that I'd eat tongue of any sort - ha ha!

I was so worried about spelling tongue right that I misspelled Calves. Sorry about that.

Hi savypat, That sounds like a wonderful inheritance and something that can be passed on to your children and grandchildren. I didn't meet any of my grandparents as all had passed away before I was born, I just have a picture of one of my grandfathers. Blessings.

I have been trying to put together a cookbook such as your grandfather did for over 10 years. We have talked it over and written parts of it with one of my closest friends, writewr too, but it just won´t get finished. Our idea was to write a story that had to do with the dish rather than how the dish was made. I think that you have a treasure there. By the way, I love chicken livers and tongue

Great inheritance Patbut I think that's just half of it, the other half would be how to preserve it for the next generations to come and see to it that they appreciate it's full contents especially the stories that came with every recipe, oh yes see to it that it is passed on to somebody like you.

I have to say that your grandparents are romantic. You can try to make the food in their book.

Ahhh that is so nice. Im jealous now Not only do you have those recipes, but you also have the story about each one. Thats great. We should all do this. I do have my mom's cookbook that she used when she got married and there are some notes here and there about what she changed in the recipe and if she liked it or not. That book is priceless for me. I do use it sometimes when I feel like cooking something that will remind me of mom. I can only hope you'll pass down this book to the next generation. Its a family treasure for sure

I am so jealous of you. Such parting treasure is indeed worth more than money. It is a priceless gem. The stories in it are what makes the recipe even more delightful. I am not a good cook. I even burn fried ones. I simply like cooking. Hearing the story of a recipe, much like how a love came to be is exciting. I do hope that cookbook is well-taken cared of and hope for it and the love that goes with it last a lifetime more.. :)
