there is always this problem when the rain continues to pour for days or even for a few hours of heavy
rain.
i think it was last friday, september 9 when i got an sms from the professor that they do not have electricity because the transformer in one of the posts has been immersed in water due to the flood. i understand from him that the river in their area has overflowed but since they live in a much higher ground, they are safe. but still, they do not have electricity and water could not get up to them because it is pumped using electricity.
do you get floods in your area due to rains? can you share your experience please?

Well last summer in Australia and in my State of Queensland in particular, there were many floods which just kept happening over and over again during the wet season. There was lots of damage, some of which you would have heard about.
I just heard on the radio this morning that they are predicting more than average rainfall again this coming summer but not as bad as last year. at least this time, we have had a dry end to winter and it has been a dry start to spring so far. This will help to hold off some of the flooding as dams will be lower than last year, but there still will be some flooding in some places. There always is during the wet season. Most of the time though, there is more warning than last year and they hit areas with less population.

hi bill,
my computer crashed and i had to wait for extra cash to have it fixed hence my response is a little late.
it seems floods is all over (i.e. philippines, china, japan, thailand, etc) when i dont hear much of it before. i guess the people have used up too much of nature hence nature gets back at us. do you ever think like this?

Hi Ann, yes I do think that from time to time. It does seem like Mother Nature has been paying us back for our carelessness in recent times doesn't it?

Recently we had one such, the road infront of our home had 3' high water, it rained nonstop for 3 days, the drains on the sides of road are blocked by garbage and plastic bags..

hi kal,
i guess we could all blame it on garbage. everything gets clogged up due to plastics.
am happy here in our place, there is a new city ordinance banning all plastics and styro materials.
i hope this helps a great deal.

I have said..
My house is about 800 meters away from river Mahanadi, downstream; the longest earth dam of Asia, HIRAKUD DAM is 3 kilometers upstream. It is raining continuously since last 30 hours; as the water reservoir was full and crossed safety level, 22 gates were opened to release water to the river, there is heavy flood; water has entered some low-level areas, people having houses there have been warned and advised to vacate, more rain is expected.
People have taken shelter in schools, temples, where relief camps are opened; free food etc will be given soon.
I have given shelter to 3 families in one of my houses that were vacant; they will go back when it is safe.

hi professor,
reason why it flooded was because all 22 gates were opened all at the same time.
had they started releasing water when it was still tolerable.. and small amounts of water, i guess, would have made a tolerable amount of water in the river hence water would rise but not flood.
am very glad you are fine and safe together with your family.

Our place is somewhat similar with your place. A little rain and there's flood because drainage systems are clogged. Only earlier part of this month, we suffered from big flood as two tropical storms hit our place. Thanks goodness we're in higher grounds but some are not lucky. Their place was totally submersed in water and only the house's roofing can be seen. We have two days of total blackout and no signals for cellphones and internet.

hi edna,
it is never like this before when there were still very few houses. but now you will not see a space without a house.
so trees are cut to give way for the houses.
we dont have typhoons getting here.. only sometimes gusts of winds. there are isolated cases of tornadoes in the provinces, though which also before, we do not experience.
things are getting a little scarier, dont you think?

When i was kid there was almost every time flood in my area as that time rods were not made with proper care. I used to go to the highway to have my shoes in while going to school. Now the problem is solve but still some water logging is there.
I even seen some places around in my are as in kid only when water flooded in to houses of many people.
Since we had so calle water pump that take water from ground we don't have to worry about it and people had use to the flood so they didn't think more of it.
Electricity is always the problem whether folood is or not
So no need of describing about it. Govenrment just take tax and didn't build the road and solve the problem of water logging and to get more worst people in the area they throw any material into the road or in the place where water fllows that jam the flow of water and more logging of water.

The other night we got flood too. We are sleeping but one of my brother is awake that's why our house is not so full with flood. My father prepared some wooden rectangle shape to put it in our doors so that the flood waters won't enter our house. One thing we didn't noticed are the holes connected to our bathroom that makes the flood water enter our house. Our electricity here is fine because the rain is not so heavy but our fence was destroyed by the flood.

hello rusale,
that is the worst thing, when floods comes at night where you cant see anything outside. it is good that the electricity didnt go off.
i guess due to the improvements done on the roads, our lots get lower than the roads hence flood waters gets into the house.
i hope you get to make ways to remedy the situation.
sorry for the late response. i didnt see this til now.
have a nice day.
