Do you believe

that George Washington actually existed? When I was in second grade I learned of this great general who led the armies to win victory against the British for the American Revolutionary War. But I had only read text about him, watched documentaries re-enacted by actors, saw some movies, and watched plays that depicted his life. Yet, I have never read a letter written by someone who personally knew George Washington. And if I were to read such a letter, I'd wonder if it wasn't forged. I have never seen other physical evidence such as a skull that was proven scientifically to be his. Has anyone ever seen the grave site of George Washington? How do you know it is his grave? Was it exhumed and DNA performed? Can I truly believe in a human being whose evidence at living is pointed out only by history textbooks and videos? What are your thoughts on this first American leader?

Is it Just George Washington whose existence you have a problem with,or was there something about Your History teacher in School that made you think they were yanking your chain about events they claim had happened before you were born? How much of what You've been told is History don't you accept as having been real?

Apologies for taking your post at face value... For My part then, even as having visited Washington DC and seen the View from the top of the Monument bearing his Name,I don't personally have any more evidence to support his existence than You do from that history book! History is part of our traditions. We have/had oral history passed down from when writing wasn't available, and record keeping from when it was.. From paper to computer records, all have been means of recording what had passed. Records and recognition of What George Washington did at the time were made and have been saved, both in document form and erected in stone..The Library of Congress as the largest repository of books and documents would have most of the evidence about the Man in its archives.. The Country's Heritage is based on such records. You, as a Citizen of your country were being taught this history to make you aware of what had happened in the past to explain how things are as they are today.

Hm.. I know all about history. And It was one of my favorite subjects in school. And I know about the Library of Congress. However, have you ever wondered if there isn't a better and current way to prove history? Think about it...in about a thousand years from now, all of what are now, will become a part of history. Some well more known than others. What would you propose to show the future descendants that you once existed?

Neither. And I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't directly assume anything about me according to what I post. This topic is an analytical question. It was made for the purpose to learn why everyone believes this man existed without much evidence in front of them. There are some who have been told he existed but have never seen his grave site, read his letters, or watched something about him in a documentary. And yet, they believe he existed. I'll make it clear here. Yes, I believe George Washington existed, despite not seeing much evidence outside of what school has told me. It doesn't take a genius to figure that much out. But I want to know from others who have not seen nor read this evidence of why they believe. I also want those who know to give me in-depth a detail explanation of why they believe through the evidence they've seen.

If you put it that way you can't. Just like you can't believe in god. You can't believe in angels, elfs, walking on the moon or all the other things they talk about or wrote down in books or made movies out of. They are just fairy tales to me (most of them). Since I never met them and I never met anyone who did met them either. To me George Washington is not interesting since he has nothing to do with my history/history of my country so if you ask me he never exist just like all the others who lived at that time and nobody can remember.

Walking on the moon is a fairy tell to you? We have actual proof that man did walk on the moon. I personally believe in God, but based on personal experiences. However that is a different story for another time. I don't disbelieve George Washington existed, but I want to know why we believe so easy and don't question it. I'd like to hope that our future descendents will know they can believe because there is substantial evidence there. The problem is gathering the evidence and conserving it to an opportune time.

I have the same doubt for queen Victoria, Napoleon, Caesar and a few others. Leaders of countries who changed the face of the world are not myths and I don't see why you are doubting of their existence. I remember I read a brilliant thesis written at the end of the 19th C proving that the Roman historian Tacitus never existed and that his books were forged at the end of the Middle Ages. I remember also to have read a book saying that Jesus Christ never existed. We cannot believe only on people we have seen or met : are you sure that your actual politicians are all real if you don't know all of them personally ? Speaking of historical people, we have to accept as proven what are telling... historians. PS : what do you want to prove with a DNA sample of George Washington ? If he has not existed, with what other DNA would you compare your sample ?

Oh? And what is your reason to doubt their existence? I should be clear here. I do not doubt that George Washington existed. I posted the question because of the vast amount of people who claim they must see before believing, despite text and other documents. I was curious at the response I'd get if I had reacted the same way with George Washington. I wanted to see whether or not people caught on. Truly, this is a provocative question and looking down below I can already see that people are jumping at the ball that I've tossed. And that I desire to know people's thoughts, not focused on what I think, but about their opinions of why they easily take what school has taught them without questioning it. I suppose you can consider this an analytical question of faith. :)

I keep stumbling on questions that conspiracy nuts would have a field day with. I highly doubt that with his own presidential library being placed on the grounds where there was at one point a george washington that owned the land, that it is a big made up mess. I highly doubt with the number of letters written by one person, that that one person was not who he says he was.

Hm? Are you saying you don't believe George Washington existed? Unless I'm reading your reply wrong. Ah yes, George Washington's library. If I recall he was avid reader correct? Wow, it's been so long since I've read most things about him. But yes, despite my questionable topic I do believe he existed. I really wanted to see what others thought. :)

Firestorm0122, This is a very provocative discussion. Many people believe in Jesus, Buddha, even God with no real evidence except the writings about them. I believe George Washington did indeed exist, he was the first American president and a really great general. I have read quite a few biographies about him and I found him quite interesting.

Oh I believe he exists, despite my topic. It was merely an analytical question at best. And that's the point I want to make too. Your statement that people believe in Jesus, Buddha, and God without any real evidence except the writings is exactly the same with George Washington to me. I suppose the big evidence is we are a free country. Although I do believe George Washington existed and was everything said to be, my analytical mind questions how we do know outside of historical letters and textbooks? Do we just believe George Washington did all of these things because we are told to believe? Or do we believe because of the impact he placed on America?

hmm this is a good quesion i personally believe that he was real but i do not blame you for questioning this now that i think about it your right no one has every really found a skull or bones or anything that really proved that he was real how do we know he really chopped down a cherry tree or that he just "could not tell a lie" i mean come on its in human nature to lie i guess there really is no way to find out for sure the best advice i can give on this one is just to go with your gut instinct

Haha. I've always wondered about the "could not lie" bit. I am not saying I don't believe he existed. I just want to know why are we so easily convinced without substantial proof where as others, such as the concept of believing in God, need proof. It baffles my mind really.

What a curious topic. Well much of his life could have been fabricated in the sense, but there are many facts about George Washington that are commonly agreed, such as he was the United States President. That is something that cannot really be disputed that he existed. Of course those days, records were not what they are today. There could have been a lot of things that have been lost to the fabric of time. I am sure that a lot of information is scrapped together. Still the man exists. I think that we have far more proof that George Washington exists than a lot of other figures that people tend to believe in. Now was a lot of his life, embellished? I think that is rather possible. History tends to be a tricky thing the further back you go. There is "evidence" that is discovered and so commonly accepted that people would not dispute it. I just wonder how much about history has been completely embellished at some point, just for everything to fit in, and everyone just went along with it.
