Anyone else allergic to fly bites? Sometimes I'm up 3 nights in a row itching and scratching my skin off. I finally started taking benadryl which helped with the itching. I'm also wondering about desensitising therapy. How'bout standing butt naked in Fly Country and get my body used to the venom they inject into me???? Lol, that sounds kinda gross, but man, the itching's out of the world. Thank heavens it's autumn here now!

There are ways to prevent bug bites, some that are natural like eating lots of garlic, to sprays and lotions you can apply that repels insects. My favorite product to use when I do get bites is a mechanic's hand cleaner called, "Fast Orange" using this every time you itch will relieve the itching, cause no scarring, and I believe makes the bite go away a lot quicker. I started out using this when I got poison ivy about three years ago. It was heaven sent, I never got over poison ivy rash so quickly before. Then this past summer I was at this outdoor meeting, wearing a dress and got over 30 mosquito bites on my back.Yep, that could have been a horrible time and yes I did have to get up once a night to re-scrub my back, but other than that, I was fine.

Citrus oils act as antihistamines and I love the smell of Fast Orange. Taking B vitamins, especially B6 is supposed to keep down the bug bites, and so that is why I think I get very few of them. If you go for the meat tenderizer look for one that either has bromelain (from pineapple)or papain (from papaya). I guess you could just put pineapple or papaya on the bites directly.

Yep, I had my son count them, he counted thirty and from what I saw in the mirror, that looked about right..But, that's my point, there was no "ouch" the Fast Orange soothed the itching like nothing else I ever used..We purchased here at Auto Zone, but if you can't get locally, maybe you can buy it online. This works so well, if I couldn't buy it at a store, I would make sure I kept a supply on hand by buying it online..Plus, if you knew me, I am not one to push a product and no, no one in my family works for this company, but I sure would love to be their spokesperson, because I fully trust this when it comes to insect bites and poison ivy..

Eeeks!!!! 30 bug bites on your back?? Ouch! :-( I thought I was bad, itching only 4-5 bug bites and staying up because the itching was so bad.

Since this is topical can you get a benadryl cream? Then you will not get the side effects of the drowsiness or hyperness, whichever happens to you with benadryl. There is also Caladryl topical, which is calamine plus benadryl. For a quick non medical relief use meat tenderizer in a paste. It dissolves the proteins that cause allergic reactions. I find that some years I have more reactions to bug bites than others. Last year was bad, this year they do not even raise a bump.

hmm...meat tenderiser, must try that one, see if it works :-) Someone did mention benadryl cream but I haven't seen it here in Canada, I'll ask my pharmacist, but i want to try the meat tenderiser first, though. Thanks :-)

I have never heard of allergies to fly bites, but I am sure you are telling the truth. We have garden spiders in the house right now and my son just woke up with a red circle and some bite marks on his arm. Last night we actually had a huge spider in the bed. I am allergic to the bites badly. I have scars in places I didn't even know I had places to bite! I hate them with a passion. My step-daughter is allergic to flea bites. They get infected almost immediately and then the itching and scratching helps the infection along. I think we are going to get the house sprayed again. I don't know if I could deal with fly bites on top of the spider bites. They do have a bait for flies too that might help. It's in a can and usually sold at tackle shops. It stinks to high heaven but works wonders. They go to the can and never come back. Good luck and I hope you start feeling better.

Ya, I know the itchiness comes from venom, I'll keep my eyes peeled for that stuff, it'll come in handy for next year.

You must have a different variety of flies where you live. Ordinary house flies annoy one but don't actually bite, nor do blowflies. Horse flies do bite, but they only live in the country where there are animals like cows and horses. I've been told that sand flies bite. Maybe that's what you have in your country. I don't reccomend your desensitizing method.

Actually, I'm allergic to every kind of bug bite and insect bite there are. My skin gets red and itchy with irritation. My skin also swells up in the areas where the bug bites and insect bites are.

No, I don't bleed. My skin just swells up, and gets red and itchy.

Ya, I break out in big welts as well, and they just don't stop itching until they bleed. Does yours get infected? Mine doesnt because I'm always on top of them when they bleed with antiseptic and antibiotic ointments.

Why not ask the doctor if he could give you antihistamines? I've never heard of fly bites, too, but I know that allergies are cured by antihistamines. I have sensitive skin, and so, I know how it feels like to itch all over.

Hi Mashi, You know why there is no vaccine for asthma? This is because it is caused by allergy and interestedly no two different people are same so far their allergen is concerned.I am allergic to dampness, foul breath, bad body odor. and my son who is just 9 is allergic to heat, I mean hot and humid climate and strong perfume and dust. People, thus different in their allergent. Say you were stunk by a wasp or bug and instantly your body reacted to the things that they leave while stinging. To add, some people are allergic to mutton, some pork, some chicken, some tortoise or crabs. Now as you know what you what causes you allergic or discomfiture you should avoid that. And remember there is no final cure to asthma.

I don't know if I am allergic to any type of bite, but I sure get a lot of itching with any of them that keep me awake and scratching for at least a few nights. The only bites that have swollen more than the average bump, though, are spider bites. I'm quite sure they are from ordinary house spiders, since the poisonous ones would have much worse effects. (For those following my Miss Muffet Moment discussion, this is one reason I don't let spiders near my bed when I see them.)

Maybe a mild allergy, if you're up scratching your skin off night after night :-p Haven't had a spider bite me before, thank heavens :-)
